What everyone failed to mention was, when smoking out of a bowl whether it be a McGuyver pipe, glassware, or a $300 dollar roor bong you must ALWAYS corner the bowl. Don't shove the flame down on top of the weed and scorch it you are just wasting shit. put the flame out the outer edge and slowly move it across. Allow me to demonstrate:
The red represents where the flame is touching the weed (the throw up looking shit).

As you can see the cornering technique takes up about as much surface area as just throwing the flame in the middle. But the flame iin the middle burns outwards torching everything continuously leaving you only a little bit left and doesn't go very far down either (2d limitations). On the other hand the cornering leaves it burning in one direction and you get everything from left to right instead of in and out. It really conserves weed when passing. But hey if you are alone and you just want to smoke a quick bowl or you have a shit load of weed do it your own way.

A bowl is the same as a pipe head. You fill the bowl with weed, suck, ignite. If there's a carb (small hole on the side of the pipe), you cover it to get denser smoke, release to let in some fresh air.
Put the lighter in your mouth and light the piece with the weed.
Ok, filter in bottom of bowl, load weed, put finger over the hole on the side, light, inhale (make sure to clear all smoke out by taking finger off the hole after a good hit) there ya go.
How do you not understand the concept of smoking a bowl...
So I filled a bowl with weed and put it in my fish smoker. When will I get high?
I'm gonna be pissed if it doesn't work because it was a fruit bowl and I spent a lot of money on weed to fill it up.
