Unless it's a top-down game, then it's like Hotline Miami.
Dwarf Fortress is definitely an excellent Hotline Miami clone.
Dwarf Fortress is the Dark Souls of Hotline Miami
Dwarf Fortress is the Dark Souls of Hotline Miami
Such glorious mindfuck you have created.
Souls like makes sense if it's trying to mimic or take inspiration from - like the movement or combat. However when people start using it to define anything hard... that's where it gets annoying. Like how would people like it if I smacked into a wall and exclaimed "Man this wall is just like Dark Souls!"
I can just imagine the journalist reaction of Long Live The Queen if it came out today The number of possible fail states and it's deceptively excrutiating trial-and-error difficulty would have websites scrambling to shit out an article titled "Long Live The Queen is the Dark Souls of kawaii anime games"

Dark Souls 3 definitely is
Thanks PC Gamer.
Yesterday I took the dark souls of shits
Wasnt surge literally made to be a dark souls clone in a sci-fi setting though

I'm preparing myself for the reviews of Monster Hunter World, telling how this franchise that predates Dark Souls plays like Dark Souls
Yeah, about that
Fucking love those comments.
Yeah, about that
"Shin Megami Tensei IV - The Dark Souls of SMT games" This is bothering so much, SMT IV is probably the most newbie friendly numbered SMT, you can literally continue from the moment before the battle when you die, it doesn't even fit the "dark souls doesn't help you" definition he's using
If My Summer Car is just Finnish everyday life, am I playing Dark Souls right now?
Finland has Dark Souls gameplay, but is best approached from a Bloodborne mindset.
It makes sense to want to describe things to people in a way they will understand, but it seems like a lot of game journo nowadays is so uninspired that they just resort to low effort loose comparisons to describe everything, eg anything with permadeath = roguelike, anything voxel or sandbox based = minecraft, anything difficult = dark souls, any large scale FPS = battlefield etc etc etc. It's one thing describing a game as having some familiar elements from another game but its another having that comparison be the headline of your article except the comparison isn't even a good one because most of the time saying a game is 'the dark souls of XYZ' just means 'its difficult and can be frustrating'
Dragon's Dogma - The Dark Souls of fantasy RPGs
Isn't Dark Souls the Dark Souls of fantasy RPGs?

Dragon's Dogma - The Dark Souls of fantasy RPGs

The article is the dark souls of shitposting tbh
"The Dark Souls of x" is the Dark Souls of memes.
dark souls
Yeah, about that
Ok now, Super Hexagon? My God. Really? After I saw this articles I realised how annoying to hear a game is like Dark Souls. We really need a new Dark Souls which plays like a normal easy relaxing hack and slash videogame to start hearing from critics saying "Dark Souls 4 isn't like Dark Souls" ASAP EDIT: However I realised if this happen, then a new Era of reviewing will start: "Zelda: Link to the Future is like Dark Souls" "Fifa 2019 isn't like Dark Souls" "Suck My Dick or Die 2 isn't like Dark Souls" "Warcraft 4 is like Dark Souls" "Cat Smuggler Simulator isn't like Dark Souls"
To be fair, Games like Nioh, Code Vein, The Surge, and Lords of the Fallen are very clearly mimicking Soulsborne combat and mechanics somewhat so that's a valid comparison. Other shit like "Cuphead is the Dark Souls of platforming shooters" makes no sense.
"I Was Too Stupid To Play A Game Properly And I'm Afraid Of Looking Dumb On The Internet By Calling It 'Hard' So Instead I'll Just Compare It To A Game That Isn't Hard At All Because I Think I'm Being Relatable And Clever"
Yesterday I took the dark souls of shits
Like what? Did strangers invaded your bathroom and started hitting you while taking a shit?
"Souls-like" is a perfectly fine descriptor for games like Lords of the Fallen, The Surge, Code Vein, and Nioh because they actually replicate key aspects of Dark Souls. The problem is just when games journalists think that it all boils down to "it's difficult" and that Dark Souls is the first game to ever be difficult.
Finland has Dark Souls gameplay, but is best approached from a Bloodborne mindset.
Fun fact: Long ago Finland was first called "Perkele Souls", but it was changed as the Swedes were put off by the implicit difficulty in the name.
It's the Dark Souls of videogames!
Remember when Far Cry 3 was called "Skyrim with guns". This isn't the first and last time game journos use popular game titles in unapropriate descriptions.
