He probably does wish for death but has a small bit of hope that something drastic will happen that will change his life. It's a suicide attempt because if nobody would have helped him he would have died.

Well, what if you convince yourself that tomorrow will be better - for months, maybe years, but everytime you wake up and find yourself disappointed. There is a limit for how much a person can take.

Honestly, I'll sound a little oversensitive, but don't underestimate how depression can affect people with the comfiest of lives.
Seriously, I got hit hard with depression and it's not something that only happens to those with a lot of problems in life. I've got a relatively comfy life other than divorcing parents. Depression still hit me hard enough to force me to drop out of high school and get put into a mental hospital for a week because of an attempted runaway-suicide.
Recovering now, so no worries, but what's almost more annoying than a "we all have problems deal with it" is "you have a comfy life you'd never know difficulty." Because both of them are totally wrong. I know kids with incredibly difficult lives that are the most hardworking and happy people you'd ever meet. I know kids with comfier lives than I have that are suicidally depressed even with proper treatment. It's not as simple as it's made out to be. Difficulties in life are relative to each person. For me, something as simple as slipping grades and a total inability to concentrate led to near suicide. Others can get past that without effort. It's very much a person-to-person issue.
Sorry for the rant, just wanted to clear up that myth that I see too much.

I can very much understand what must have went through his mind. My guess it, he's looking for confirmation that someone still gives a shit. Honestly, I like his approach. He's done with life and wants to quit, but even on that small step towards death, he still waits for a chance out. If noone even cares about this, then he truly sees no point but he's giving himself a chance, and mor than that, he's giving others a chance to intervene. There'll be no "If only we could have done something" scenario in his method and it's not like he's jumping to death, throwing himself in front of a vehicle or using a gun, something you can't prevent until it's happened and that's usually awful for people to watch.
I'm not saying suicide is a solution, but if you're gonna do it, this is probably the only way to be smart about it
