Jesus christ, this thing sounds incredible.
Perfect for making ambient tunes.

Dead would be just the sound of the stick hitting it a nothing else. Notice how it is actually a note on the staff the tom makes.
I looked up the price of that 80" gong, nearly 30 grand for one... One day, I shall have that gong on my kit. I don't care how long I have to save. I may not get it until i am 96 but that gong shall be behind my kit one day.

The tom is tuned low, but it's far from dead. It's resonating quite a bit, actually.
My band are playing a couple of decent festivals this year and I'm look at getting some new cymbals. I have a starter paiste set, 16" crash, 14" hats and I think a 20/22" ride, with a 18" Zildjian ZBT crash, which is RIDICULOUSLY loud, when playing in small venues it's a nightmare for the sound guys.
I was thinking of getting a pair of A customs to replace my crashes but money is tight, though I believe they would be a good investment. Has anyone got any/had any experience with them? Also any recommended hi-hats? I play in a pop-punk/ indie rock band.
Thanks for any help guys!
I recommend the A custom crashes for any type of music(I use 2 of them on my drum-vids). If you want some nice hi-hats, I recommend either Sabian AAX or HHX-series.

i dont think so
i dont hear any resonant at all
i dont think so

Thats because when they record, a sound engineer's worst nightmare is really resonant drums. If you go up to those drums in real life I would put money that they sing more than the chorus at my school. When you record you typically cut off most of the drums resonating, you try to get more of the attack.
My invader pad is here! :D

Maybe it's your headphones? It's definitely resonating.

i see
so basically its like simulating a dead drum right?
if that's the sound that the sound eingeers go for, then why do dead drums sound bad?

Except its not dead, you grab the attack and a bit of the resonance typically, it sounds really nice, and its what a band sounds like from 30 feet away typically. Sound engineers go for it because its easier for them to record. If you go into a studio and a sound engineer ever gives you duct tape or muffling just tell him no. Its his job to record your drums not his.
Started to examine Ginger Baker's drum technique. Especially his organised use of two bass drums.
Look how awesome he is:

His classic hard rock drumming is just orgasmic. That snare sound, man. He's just knows where and what to play. This feeling comes with years.

And excessive drug-abuse. I thought he was really cool, until I saw his book "Worlds greatest drummer", where he tells off every other drummer and even some musicians. He really thinks he's the best drummer in the whole world. Smells like sour grapes to me, but at least I like his playing with Cream..
Anyways, been practicing with 2 different bands today, 'tis stressful but pretty fun.
Here's something fun to wrap your head around.

It's for a calc bc end of year 'project' thing. It's the first 38 digits of pi. Each digit is assigned a rhythmic value (1 is a quarter, 2 is an eighth, 3 is a triplet... ect). It's challenging as HELL to play along with a metronome. The 32nd-9-7-9 modulation is one of the weirdest things I've ever played.
Oddly enough, it seems to have a certain cadence to it (mostly in bars 1-4, and 7-9).
Have fun!

That is pretty neato. I'll have to try it out some time.

This looks like an awesome exercise for odd subdivisions.
Though I don't understand how the first measure is 3.14...
By my system, the 3 would indicate a triplet. I wanted to work in the decimal point somehow, so I made it two dotted eighth note partials of a triplet (which is equivalent to an eighth note duplet).
Also, I messed up a little bit. Beat two of bar three should be a sixlet, not a eighth note triplet (3.1415926538...). Whoops.
Just made a quick tutorial vid on how I approach and practice odd-times in tunes/arrangements.

Anyone able to help me out? Plan on getting two new pairs of sticks. However no where I look has them both for purchase online. Looking for Vic Firth's Ralph Hardimon "Chop Out" sticks and Vater MV2 snare sticks.

Dude, he was like 70 years old in that interview. What could drummer with 50 years experience of drumming say? "I still not that high-level drummer"?
He's pretty much god already.

what are you on about that floortom is far from dead
dead drums sound horrible, this doesn't.

He's almost always been like this. He could stop being a pretentious twat and stop shit-talking other musicians and be a professional. You would never see any other pro-drummer talk crap about their work-collegues, especially not in a published book.
Citation needed.

i had my drums tuned like that and you guys told me they were dead
thats probably because you probably recorded it with a camera mic. and because it wasn't really tuned like that.
wheres the video/soundfile i'd like to hear it.
