People can hear me playing down the street :( I don't know how to insulate my room! D:
Yeah same here it really annoys me :@ King of 13 ;)
Yeah sometimes I just sit down on my drum kit like "Right, time to play" Then I hear kids playing outside or something, and I just tap the ride cymbal a bit, and then I just say screw it and go do something else. Damn self-conciousness!
You could try putting foam all over your walls. Not sure how well that would work/look though...
Sound proof foam is expensive as hell too 100$ = 32 1'x1'x2" squares

I was like that until i joined a band. we practice in my basement so sound can't be an issue.
I play however the I want. If people think it's too loud they just need to tell me.
My drums are in my dining room, which is open to the kitchen and my huge open living room (I hate it) lol. The only thing really to muffle it, is wood furniture and short carpet under the drums. The dining room is at the front of my house, and I used to be afraid to play too loud, now I just play however loud I want, sometimes as early as 8am, and as late as 10-11pm. No complaints from neighbors =) My neighbors across the street (far across the street, at least 100 yards; long driveways, etc) say they hear me all the time, but it doesn't bother them :c00l:

Yeah, it's pretty cool =) I'm surprised my neighbors that are right next to my house don't bitch about the noise, they cry over everything. They're like 70+ years old, and probably the crankiest people I know of.

Are they worth it?
I play the drums in this band, we just had a practice yesterday and took a video of one of the songs. let me know what you think
You did very well, and from what I could from the other guys (the drums really drowned them out) they did great too.
Psh who needs a drum set when you've got some good ol' buckets

I have played for about 2.5 years now. I play on my father's kit which is a top of the line (at the time) Ludwig kit from the early 80s. It probably isn't neat top of the line now, but my father spent 5k on it at the time. We have a 18" Sabian Crash (before cymbal lines), 18" Paiste Colorsound Crash, 20" Zildjian A Ping Ride, and 14" Zildjian Avedis Hihats, along with some poopy Sabian B8 splash. We do however have a 1979 Ludwig Supraphonic (I love the sound, but it is a rock sound only, I am looking for something more universal). The sizes on my kit are 12x13, 13x14, 16x18, 16x24, 5x14. Here is a short video of just testing out a video camera from school: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udcxqRKtP8s Right now I am currently saving up to get a Pearl Vision Birch kit in Concord Fade, along with: 14" Sabian AA MetalX hats 17" Sabian AA MetalX Crash 18" Sabian AAX Dark Crash 17" Sabian AAX Medium Crash 16" Sabian AA Fast China 16" Sabian AAX China 21" Sabian AA Dry Raw Bell ride I'm hoping to get enough within the next 2 years, it will be total about $4k for all of the shells, cymbals, and hardware. Here is the setup I really want: (ignore the cymbal names, I made it in DW drummaker when I was interested in the Paiste Rude series) Edit, here is a picture of lovely Concord Fade

It's good with headphones to block out the other noises. I have an amp with it as well.

I had Pinstripes before which I thought were a bit better, but the Vintage Coated Emperors I have now are amazing, I highly recommend those. Vintage Coated Emperors just have an amazing warm tone to them. Also for the snare, I HIGHLY recommend a Skyntone head. Those are fucking great. The tone is warm and focused, it makes the toms sound like they are already processed. Reso's love a nice G1. For my snare I like the Aquarian high energy batter with a Hazy300 on snare side.

What is the essintial drum kit equipment I need. I have been using my Brothers freinds kit so far(cause his Parents are in Aus and hes living with us) and he's moving out soon. I just want to know the basic stuff I should get.
Snare, kick, and hi-hats are just about all you absolutely 'need', but in a standard kit, you'll have a snare, kick, floor tom, 1 or 2 rack toms, a ride cymbal, crash cymbal, and hi-hats.

Protip always use a beater patch Just spent $104 on 2 EMAD 2's a couple of weeks ago just to have them have the 1st ply crack, Just got back from Sam Ash and Spent $80 on 2 Aquarian 22" Super Kick 1 head. I like my emads I didnt tune them much I tuned them kinda loose and got a Emmure-ish sound from them but I have a SK2 on my Tama kit and it's pretty cool also one of my favorite drummers Noah Vowles uses Aquarian on his kick.
My awesome set. It's the Roland TD-20K V-Pro electronic kit. Roland makes the best electronic drums, period. Only complaint is that the cymbal quality isn't as amazing as the rest of the set.

To efficiently play, you would want a kick drum, snare, and I would say at least 2 toms. Hardware: Many starter kits come with this. You need kick pedal, tom mounting system, hi-hat stand, throne, various cymbal stands (boom, straight). Accessories: Sticks, drum keys, felts and cymbal protectors to keep the cymbals from keyholing. You also might want to step up from the stock heads to get a better sound out of the drums. Even a shitty quality drum kit can USUALLY sound decent with good heads and a good tuning. I am going off to college in 1-2 years, and the college would be pretty much a state away, so I wouldn't get to play much. I might just go the electric route so that when I am done in the dorms, I can use my kit in any apartments or rental housing I may be stuck in through college.
