7 nation army is easy as hell, another brick in the wall is easy and a good song, and strange times by the black keys is nice and easy.
Going to learn 7 Nation Army.
Ugh. Got back from my new school's band camp which was 12 hours. I was put on bass 3 but we use basses 1 2 and 4 so I am going to be fucking sore the next few days. And the percussion instructor said he will definitely put me on snare for indoor marching season. New show is easy as hell but it's going to be about as fun as the Michael Jackson one because we're doing Irish folksongs.

Irish folk songs and michael jackson? That's an interesting combination.
Anyone got any other songs? I'm still working on Seven Nation Army but part of the beat is something I'm going to have to work on.
This is going to sound like an idiot question, but let me explain first.
I've played Rock Band for like three years, and I play guitar, but no drum experience other than RB. My grandma has a seven piece electronic drum set (yeah, she's awesome). I was messing around with it and as soon as I realized each drum can be given a color like in the game, I could play songs. Now, according to my grandma, I'm amazing. So I'm going to mess around with it more and maybe buy a set.
Here's my question, though. Her set consists of:
2 cymbals
1 hi-hat
1 hi-hat pedal (no idea what that does)
1 bass pedal
1 drum (not sure what it's called, but it's like the main one. In RB terms it's usually red)
3 toms
Now, in the game, toms are blue. However, her set has three of them and each has a different sound. In RB, if you have a drum roll, it usually rolls red-yellow-blue-green, but I suspect that doesn't mean drum-hihat-tom-cymbal, it's probably tom 1-tom 2-tom 3-cymbal, etc.
How can I figure out which drum to actually hit during a roll like that? It doesn't sound right if I play it wrong.
Here's an example of what I'm saying so I don't sound retarded.

Obviously, the beginning is hi-hat rolls and then HH+tom.
Then, it's just rolls of that normal drum with hi-hat hits, and then a cymbal. However, there are rolls that go RYBG, and like I said, they sound like all toms. How can I figure out what the hell to play there?
(Also, after it goes red yellow red yellow, there's a break and then it's yellow (space) yellowyellow green+bass. Is that yellowyellow hi-hat or toms?)
I figure once I get good at this I can translate more songs. I'm trying to learn drum tab too and get my ear trained.
[editline]12:03AM[/editline]
And, just for the sake of completion, at around 2:30, that long red roll. That sounds more like a hi-hat than anything else. Am I right?

That's a cover version of Run to the Hills, I recommend using the original version, it would be much easier to translate.
To clarify, the hi hat pedal can be used to control the sound of your hi hat or be used as something to play on. The song Run to the Hills uses the hi hat pedal in the opening on every 4 count.
And Run to the Hills uses the snare as red for nearly that entire song, the only notes I can think of that aren't snare hits for red are the drummer's fills and the end.

im kinda confused by your post, but i think what you mean is that your playing songs on rock band and playing along to the chart with a real electronic set, but it sometime sounds wrong.
the problem is rock band can't chart everything on 4 pads, so the best way to play the song correctly is to learn it by ear, and have rock band guide you through it.

Awesome. The school I transferred from was doing a song Lil' someone called Shots. This school only has 2 cadences which sucks. I have music for about 10 or so but I can only give 2 to the new percussion instructor because I found them on the internet.

Their first album is good. Learn those songs. Stop hating on them because they shifted from good music to what ever they do now.

What I meant to say was that I have a seven piece electronic kit that I can practice on. I memorized a lot of RB drum charts because I just have that kind of time, and I'm trying to translate the charts to real drums so I can play the songs, but the problem is RB doesn't always chart right so I'm trying to figure out when I need to just change it myself to whatever the correct note is. But I'm generally able to do it by ear, more or less. So it's not too bad.

2 cadences is all you need. We have a traditional one which has been used forever for parades and pre-game shows, which are all about tradition and stuff. Our second one is our everything else cadence that is updated every 5 years or so.

Don't bother trying to copy iron maiden because Nicko's kit is as follows:
Premier Elite Drums with custom finish
6x6" Tom
8x8" Tom
10x10" Tom
12x12" Tom
13x13" Tom
14x14" Tom
15x15" Tom
16x16" Tom
18x16" Floor Tom
24x18" Gen-X Bass Drum
14x6.5" Ludwig LM402 Snare Drum
The puppet Sooty dressed as a Pharaoh in representation of the Somewhere Back in Time Tour and as an extraterrestrial in representation of of the Final Frontier World Tour.
Drumheads
Remo Coated Ambassadors (tom batter heads), Ebony Ambassadors (resonant tom heads), Coated Emperor X (snare), Fiberskyn 3 (bass)
Cymbals by Paiste [11]
15" Signature Reflector Heavy Full Crash (custom)
19" Signature Reflector Heavy Full Crash
16" Signature Reflector Heavy Full Crash
20" Signature Reflector Heavy Full Crash
18" Signature Reflector Heavy Full Crash
14" Signature Heavy Hi-Hat (Reflector Finish) (custom)
13" Formula 602 Heavy Bell (discontinued)

The rock band version is a incredible oversimplification.
He can play it just fine with that kit. He might not be able to alternate crash hits but he can play it.

I'm more interested in the quality before I buy it, it can sound great but if it tears or does whatever the minute I tap it I don't exactly want to blow 15 dollars on it.

Remo make good heads with a nice quality record, so I'd give it a try. If it really is 15 bucks, you can swap for a different one if you don't like the sound because $15 is really cheap.

"REMO has added a new snare head that’s expected to rule the market for the heaviest snare hitters. The EMPEROR X™ is the thickest snare head ever made by REMO®."
I don't think it's going to tear any time soon
no head by a well known company like remo aquarian evans or attack is going to tear if you treat is decent, thats not your main concern, it's sound that you're going for, the emperor is a really thick head, 2 thick double plys, the drum is going to have a high pitched "sing" to it, because thicker heads have the tendency to resonate a lot. i think you can tune it pretty dry if you try, especially if you choke it, but i wouldn't reccomend that.
IMO it will sound pretty one dimentional, and won't have as much tuning capabilities as a remo ambassador, but a lot of people are after this sound, so decide for yourself. For me, nothing can beat a Coated Ambassador over Ambassador snare.
what's your snares reso?
(AKA, every head is going to last, don't sacrifce your sound for thinking a head will last you longer when it doesn't have the sound you want)
This is my uncle's 4-piece Ludwig from 1961.

The cymbal next to the high-hat was owned by Lynyrd Skynyrd drummer Artimus Pyle. I don't know how long ago he got it, though.

The bass-drum head is from my uncle being in an early 90's punk band called "Thunder Bunny." They never got past the "playing in bars" stage.

He got this set from a pawn shop in the late 70's. It was a piece of junk when they got it, but now it could bring in a lot of money if sold.
It sounds pretty good when playing. It's been played many times before so it doesn't have that "fresh out of the case" sound.

Some drummers pay thousands for that "not fresh out of the case" sound! That is some diamond there! Pretty cool! Would love to hear how it sounds
I have personal experience with an old set, it sounds like a orgasm. My drumset on the other hand, sounds like a thousand justin beaver twilight fans.
