You can use the toms melodically, or use different sounding toms in different musical textures, etc.
Don't say that someone is wrong because they are different than you.
I've been playing drums for 3 years. For the past 4 weeks I've practiced nearly 2 hours a day EVERY day. I have a style, and it calls for as many damn toms as I want, as many cymbals as I want, and if it calls for putting cowbell on every piece of equipment I will do so.
Go change your tampon and come back when you're going to be a reasonable adult.
Shut the fuck up, guy. If you've been playing drums for 3 years then you shouldn't fuck up on Seven Nation Army at all. I've been playing drums in general for 8 years now, the first 4 were only snare and I started drum set 4 years into it. You should be far better then you are, and calling me unreasonable because I actually have a point is fucked up. You're not Neil Peart, you're not Mike Portnoy, you're not The Rev(lol), 10 toms won't accomplish any more and at that point they're just for showing off.

I'm sorry I'm not a fucking drum prodigy like you. I'm sorry that you appear to have a 24/7 period and have to take it out on people around you. I'm sorry that you seem to think everyone is fucking perfect. I'm not sorry however, that you're acting like a fucking child who thinks he can tell how good a drummer is just by looking at a single video of him playing a song. News flash, I never practiced to a metronome before that, you put anybody who doesn't practice to the metronome behind a drumset and have them keep in time with it. GUESS WHAT. They're not going to be perfectly on beat compared to it. I may not be Mike Portnoy or Neil Peart, but I know who the fuck I am. I am a drummer who aspires to be someone like Mike Portnoy one day or Neil Peart. I play drums for fun, and if I want to use 10 fucking toms I will. So get the fuck out because you obviously aren't ready to handle simple interactions with another human being if you get pissed off at a simple difference in opinion.
Don't say that someone is wrong because they are different than you.
this
I can play perfectly fine with 1 ride, hats, 1 tom, bass drum, and a snare. However, I choose not to for multiple reasons. Your opinion on my quantities of shells means absolutely fucking nothing to me. Stop being a prick about it.
man stupid is a dick

Way to go with the whole 'make personal assumptions because I have no actual argument. I never said I was a prodigy or even mentioned anything about a metronome. The fact that Meg White owns you in drums(you can't even keep up with the goddamn song), I certainly am going to tell what kind of drummer you are based off of a video that probably has the easiest song ever. I don't give an actual fuck if you've played to a metronome; as a drummer with "3 years" of experience, you should be able to keep a beat atleast within 5 bpm of a song. And guess what, I know what kind of drummer you are. You're the kind of one who orgasms over new equipment and completely overdoes it when you still have the bare basics to work on.
goodayy sir :banjo:

Okay, I honestly know I never went over 5 BMP off beat. And you are a true dumbass if you think not playing a metronome has nothing to do with it. It is really really hard, to keep a beat to a beep, or in Seven Nation Army's case a floor tom hit, if you don't practice to a metronome.
You must be a prodigy, you have 8 years of experience and at 3 years you played absolutely perfectly with no mistakes. And everyone sucks compared to you.

Seriously kid, shut the fuck up. Ever hear of internal-beat? That's when you're able to think/feel the beat without using a metronome. I've never practiced drum kit to a metronome.
Also quit with the dull sarcastic acts. There's plenty of people better than me that I know. I've never said I've played perfectly, so you really need to stop taking shit out of context to defend yourself.

Oh wow. You're one of those musicians. The one that teaches his/herself than acts as if they know everything. And when someone comes along and than actually knows something more than them they get pissed.
Any good drummer can play to a metronome. You know all those songs you like listening to? That's all done to a click track. Next thing you know you're going to tell me you don't know what a paradiddle is.

I don't think you understand, songs are recorded to a metronome because they have to be PERFECT. If you've ever tracked drums for a band you would know this.

I know that, which is why I say any good drummer should be able to play to a metronome.

No, any good drummer should be able to play without a metronome.
No, any good drummer should be able to play without a metronome.
They should be able to play without one but when need be they should be able to play to one.
They should be able to play without one but when need be they should be able to play to one.
Agreed.
The only thing I have a problem with is why does a kid needs 10 toms when he's just learning to play?
Because it's his money and he is to spend it how he deems fit?

It's funny because you've been the one that's benn pissy over the last few posts. It's also funny because by judging from you're supposed experience, and they way you play, you seem to be the one who taught himself. Playing to a metronome is the easiest thing in the world, metronomes should be used to be used to get used to the idea and feel of the song. Playing without a metronome, is a difficult thing to do, and is apparently something that you can't do.
. I've never practiced drum kit to a metronome.

Somethings not right here... For someone who has never played to a metronome, you sure know a lot about playing to a metronome.
This is like me saying playing guitar is easy, when I don't play guitar.

Hey idiot, I said I've never played to metronome on a drumkit, I didn't say anything about snare playing.

Wow, please, calm down man.
This posturing is fucking ridiculous. Who cares how somebody has their kit? Who cares if somebody is a bigot? No one cares about the argument you're having, so can someone post another video of them playing something awesome?
Where is the harm in playing with a metronome on a kit?
Where is the harm in playing with a metronome on a kit?
Who said there was?
It just looked like there was an argument about it.
There is a lot of hating going on in this thread. Haha
If I wanted to start playing drums where would be the best place to learn and what set would be the best to play on?
If I wanted to start playing drums where would be the best place to learn and what set would be the best to play on?
Getting a teacher that can give you lessons. And any basic beginners kit. Second is best because it's cheaper and you're not looking for the best quality kits to start off with.
Stop arguing about his drums. Everyone has to go through the whole "10 toms" thing before they realise, that you can do just as well with half of them.
The best way to clean up your playing is to:
Practice singles-doubles and other rudiments to a metronome.
Record yourself playing with a metronome. Remember to count loudly to also improve your internal clock. Do this every day, and you will get better.
The thing is, do you want to be a good drummer or just jam with your pals?
Stop arguing about his drums. Everyone has to go through the whole "10 toms" thing before they realise, that you can do just as well with half og them
I didn't. I prefer using cymbals.
I didn't. I prefer using cymbals.
Each to his own I guess. Anyway, we all gotta start somewhere. Horrible tom-angels, horrible tuning, horrible cymbals. That's how I started out anyway(and probably loads of others).
