i wouldn't say cover panic attack just because it's been done to death since it's on rb2. pull me under would be good but i'd say do something more unexpected by dt like yste jam or if you can do it i highly suggest learning to live
If you want to go for ignored Dream Theater songs, how about 6:00, Caught In A Web, In The Presence of Enemies, or even Stream of Consciousness.
Stream of Consciousness sounds mighty fine
Alright, it may have something to do with the cymbals themselves, but whichever crash I have on the left always seems to get a crack in it. I'm pretty sure it's something to do with my technique for the left hand, or maybe just the position of the cymbal. However both of the cymbals have been ZBTs... does the durability decrease with the lower end cymbals? I've had a 19" A Custom crash on the right side and it's given me no issues at all.
Test it with another high quality cymbal. If that breaks, it's your hand technique.
I'm at a bit of a decision here. I'm practicing double-bass and thinking about my next cover video. Should I cover Tool with Schism or Dream Theater with Panic attack, pull me under or maybe some other Dream Theater track.
please do panic attack, the drumming in it is superb, i'd love to get a closer look at it too
I reckon you should do the harder song. You'll improve to play it, so it pays off.
Test it with another high quality cymbal. If that breaks, it's your hand technique.
thats the worst advice i ever heard. @infx it's your technique, any cymbal will actually last you a life time with proper technique, you probably improved, you shouldn't hit them head on, but in a swiping motion, don't try to hit trough them, but rather past them. as stated on paiste's site:
I hate the look of tilted cymbals, as well as people who play with their toms basically facing them. It's ugly. I keep my cymbals flat but slightly lower than average, so I can still hit the top where you're supposed to.

The last thing I need for my recording adventures should come in tomorrow. Hopefully I can go to my kit tomorrow and try out a few test records. Now I know for certain what to use.

Ok, I almost got Schism down.. I'll try to practice on the Dream Theater tunes, the problem is that I only have drum-less versions of Pull me Under and Panic Attack. So it seems it's gonna be one of them.
I hate the look of tilted cymbals, as well as people who play with their toms basically facing them.
I can't play my toms without having them angled forwards quite a bit. I'm tall (ie long limbs), so if I had the toms pretty flat, I wouldn't be able to hit the tom heads at all, unless I sit absurdly high up...

That probably explains why half of the bead of my stick was completely gone after playing for a little over an hour. After marching for 4 years, "playing through the head"' is the only technique I know.

This way you are not fighting gravity when you play. The largest tom angle you should have is like 45 degrees.

I'm tall (ie long limbs), so if I had the toms pretty flat, I wouldn't be able to hit the tom heads at all, unless I sit absurdly high up...
i'm tall too, and i'm finding keeping my toms flat is the only and best solution. you'll have to make some decisions about how you're gonna play de bassdrum (i'm guessing you mount your toms off the bassdrum) basically you're going to want to play it close to this or heel up depending on what your style is, but take notice of the leg, your leg should be angled away from the bassdrum slightly, not directly above the pedal, or too far away from it, this is essential. you're going to notice that your bassdrum is away a lot if you're tall, and so are your toms going to be, thats where your problem kicks in, you're traveling far, this makes for uncomfortable positioning (this is a traditional setup) personally i hate positioning a ride in a setup like this too. getting back to your problem, offset toms is the way to go for tall people, because you have a lot more freedom moving them. you'd have to get a seperate stand and double tom clamp (or a tom stand) to do this, but it's well worth it. i personally hang my toms off a boom stand, the boom holds my leftmost crash. the thing is, this stand will give you independence, so you can look for the position best suited for you (comfortable angle, least distance travelled between snare->toms. (offset setup, you could add an extra bassdrum as drawn, but it certainly isn't needed) it's usually the best to keep the second tom slightly over, or completely over the bassdrum, or else you'll get one of those hardcore kids' setups with the toms all the way to the left and so low you have to crouch, wich means you have to position your hi hat somewhere on jupiter for it to not hit the toms. this information is really usefull for any drummer, your drumset deserves a chance to be an offset setup, i promis many of you will like it, it makes for an awesome ride positioning, toms both close to the snare, independant tom positioning, once i switched to offset i never went back. I made snare for indoor. However we're likely going to use two pearl snares and one Premier snare from the 1990s, I really hope I don't get put on the Premier one.
Yay my recording stuff is now usable. Hopefully I can get to my kit today to try it out and see how it sounds. [editline]8th December 2010[/editline] Oh wait, I have to go to lowes and get some 3/8th threaded rod and some F&M plates to make a homemade mic stand.

They sell much, much shorter segments (like 3") in the Hillman drawers in hardware, instead of having to get a footlong section of it.

It's about a 1 foot piece I am using so the mic will be directly above my kit. He even let me use his laptop (so I don't have to lug my computer), corded drill and drill bits and bought my all the rest of the stuff I need. He is so awesome.
aaah, you see, I always play in the "I HATE YOU CYMBALS I WANT YOU TO SUFFER" style, with lots of angry straight hits and occasional chunks taken out of my sticks
Same here, I gone through quite a few pairs of sticks. My ones now are getting pretty rugged too.
It's weird that I used to break my sticks so often and now (since 3-4 months) I did not even break one of them (they look a bit used) and I play really hard sometimes, but I can feel that I automaticly got used to some sort of flowing movement of the sticks and wrists since I started and evolved my hip hop styled groove playing style. I also have some question! Which piccolo snare would you recommend me? Max budget is 180€ I am after some nice filled with overtones high pitched groovy sound which would go along with some hip hop groove styled playing! I guess steel piccolos would be a bit to sharp so I guess its wood or something else! Need some help with that
*good setup stuff*
Very interesting, my setup is somewhere between the two. I have the hi-hat further round the snare (closer to me), but not as far as offset - but then I still have my toms mounted on the bass, but everything's a bit less symmetrical, curved round inwards towards me a bit more. T2 is pulled forward along with the ride. I tried to draw it, it's close-ish but obviously not laser-scan accurate. Might be interesting to what other people's setups look like though, I have no idea how much it varies. (Oh, and the left foot pedals are way off!) Oh holy shit I am fucking terrible at playing drums. Maybe it was just since I knew i was recording I dunno but I suck. Uploading some audio [editline]9th December 2010[/editline] http://www.zshare.net/audio/83677070d4b1dfc0/ Tempos are off fills are fucked up I miss the cymbals a few times I really need to improve I covered disposable heros live btw

Which do you guys prefer, coated toms, or clear?
A Simmel and a (Forgot the other instrument's name) fall down a cliff. :downsrim: [sp]Ba-dum PSSH![/sp]
Which do you guys prefer, coated toms, or clear?
Clear. Sounds better.
Congrats! What circuit will you be competing in?
We won't be competing unfortunately. This the first year in 3 years that we have had a indoor percussion. [editline]9th December 2010[/editline]
Which do you guys prefer, coated toms, or clear?
Coated over clears on rack toms and snare, clear over clear on floor toms. Floor tom top heads for me typically are heads with a lot of attack and little sustain. All my bottom heads are usually ambassador clears. Top coated are Emperors, and my floor tom head is a Evans G1 I think.
What are some ways I can improve my tempo control and timings and what not? I am going to give playing to a metronome set to X speed I need practice a try but outside of that I have no idea.
