It's also nice to know how to read music and notes One tune me and my band are working on has this unison thingy where every instrument plays the same(sort of like accents). Took me 3-4 tries on a practice pad to get it down, but it will be alot harder on the drums. It's alot easier if you know how to read sheets/notes though. If anyones interested, heres the unison. Try to play it .
I personaly would rather have the Gretsch. I think I just don't like big kits
I know Ha that's what I've been thinking. I'm wanting to have this kit for playing softer rock and more slow paced easy listening ,and my double bass mapex for harder/louder stuff!

Here's a question to you guys that make up your own material (in bands mainly, but anyone could answer this I guess). How do you go about fitting in fills that sound right? I find it really hard to come up with any decent fills beyond a snare roll and I find it even harder to fit them in the right place in a song with guitar and stuff going on. How do you guys do it? Or do you just play anything as long as it stays in time?
I generally try to keep it in time, but if it's a transition fill (going from one part to the next) I try to make it as distinct as possible, and maybe change the time.

Or a double pedal? You could do some quads, or variations of quads. (2 hits on toms/snare, 2 kicks, repeat; should make 4 evenly played note (hence quads). but you can keep them going as long as you want.) Quads: Go to 2:04 for an example of some epic quads shit you can do.
2:44 was way cooler.
USE EAR PROTECTION. My drummer friend doesn't use any and he calls me a pussy for using earplugs. Fuck him. He'll fucking see. [editline]03:08PM[/editline] Also can anyone shed any light on how to listen to music, while playing drums while using earplugs?
Skullcandies, ipod in pocket. works well. get these http://www.skullcandy.com/shop/inkd-p-126.html no too costly, works like a charm
Practice strictly rudiments and warm ups and that kind of stuff. Trust me when you have a band to play with next time you will feel like you can play so much more.
thanks that was good advice, I practised rudiments for like an hour non stop yesterday, killed my hands but worth it. Also I've started playing along to songs that last for like 8 minutes E.G. Freebird to improve my staying power and ability to keep one beat going for several minutes, I'd recommend that to anyone who starts to lose the beat after playing it for ages [editline]09:57AM[/editline]
Here's a question to you guys that make up your own material (in bands mainly, but anyone could answer this I guess). Aljaud how long you been playing?
Drums are the best. They relieve me of stress, damaging thoughts and other stuff. Drums all the way.
Aljaud how long you been playing?
Eh, not too long, I started playing just over a year ago. My dad's been playing since the 70's haha, so I got kind of a head start..but I'm already better than him at a lot of stuff :) However, we play completely different styles of music. I'm more of a progressive metal drummer, and he's like a classic rock drummer.

now if your going for crazy speed metal at your finest, then look at this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSoGXh6JI6Q

I don't believe that speed defines skill. All it defines is practicing single stroke roles a million times over and over. Anyone can do it, but it's useless really. I'm not hating on that style of music but I disagree that he can be considered the best drummer just because he is fast. Also here is a good video that is really inspiring. One of the best prog drummers.

Gavin Harrison is one of my favourite prog-drummers. My only gripe with him is that he sometimes plays abit booring on some parts. He's definately the most talented in Porcupine Tree imo. As i see it, It's best to have favourite drummers sorted by genres, instead of favourite drummers over all. So for example: Gavin Harrison is my favourite prog-drummer, Thomas Haake is my favourite metal-drummer etc. Then you don't need all this discussion.
hahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa good stuff guys
