Practicing a new drum cover for 2 days now. Getting angry and frustrated sucks, but I'm too stubborn to give up.. At least there's progress.
Good to see you wont give up. Learning a song you never thought you could do is so satisfying, especially when you get a great fill, looking forward to seeing it. I've subscribed to your youtube :haw:

Thanks dude! I'll probably record it today. It makes the Tool-cover look like a walk in the park(more or less).
Here's the cover guys, hope you like it! Took me 3 days.

how long have you been playing for?
how long have you been playing for?
7 years, but i had 3 years where I almost didn't play anything, so it's really 4-5.

thats a new take on song2, i really like the drumming and your drums always sound great.
i wishi was at that level.
fantastic video bro!
So I've been working to a metronome for a few weeks now for about 20 minutes whenever i can get on the kit which is about 2 or 3 times a week. I am gonna be boosting it to 40 minutes.
If I practice at 93 bpm (chosen because it coincides with a song I need to learn to play perfectly) with the scheduled routine, how long till i see a a noticeable improvement in my timings? I know it's not gonna be overnight or anything but what is a common time that it takes for timings to improve?

Take or give a month, if you're doing it right. Remember to watch technique videos, so that you learn good technique.
like single rolls and keeping things tight right?
like single rolls and keeping things tight right?
Singles, doubles, paradiddles etc.
If you can get diddles down and sixteenth notes with a flam on the quarter notes. Try a cheese, its basically sixteenth notes but on the flam you play a double on the marcato hand. (I.E. Downstroke, basically the hand doing the accent in a flam). The hand doing taps stays the same through out. They sound really awesome but for some reason are hard to play. At least for me they are.

Dude! That was immense! I watched that in awe lol
I'm looking at new heads, any suggestions guys? Preferably Evans. Looking for something with a lot of attack but also plenty of resonance.

for toms? snare? bass? everything? batter? resonants?
Everything.
(remo)coated ambassador over ambassador snareside on snare. clear emperor over clear ambassador on toms.
(aquarian) SKII clear on batterside Regulator with small offset porthole on resonant side on bassdrum.
if you insist on having evans go with G2 over G1 on toms. an emad on the bassdrum. i wouldn't recommend anything else than the ambassadors on the snare.

it sounds pretty awesome
(floor tom has ambassador on ambassador )
Does anyone have any suggestions for learning a song by ear? I absolutely suck at it. Which our Indoor Instructor says I need to work on. And which I feel I need to work on. Everytime someone plays something for me to learn by ear unless its really simple (like our cymbal line parts) it takes me forever. That, or I have to ask them to slow it down as slow as they can play it.
However if you give me sheet music I'll have the part down within 3 days and memorized.

If you have any friends that are interested in drumming like you are, trying writing something with them by alternating bars. Bust out a pad, have them come up with a bar of music and teach it to you, then you come up with a bar and teach it to them, ect ect until you have a complete lick. This will help you internalize music more quickly, and you'll get a (hopefully) cool lick out of it.
Here's what me and a friend came up with a few weeks ago... I ended up writing most of it, so it's not really a fair "add a bar", but whatever.

Talking about something like say.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GoDEHK7eXWw
Marching Snare its not so bad for me. Because it sounds so much more clearer and half the time its a double stroke played at around 180...
AH, gotcha. I figured you were talking about marching because you mentioned your indoor instructor. I've got nothing for drumset, haha.
Marching Snare its easier for me. Maybe its because usually when you listen to a Drum Corps play you're hearing 9 snares in near perfect unison and you can hear it over the band or that they know usually have a extremely catchy street beat. Drumset is a whole lot harder because its usually the guitar playing something catchy and for some reason about 50 million decibels louder than the drumset.
One of my favourite drummers recently; Brian Vigilone from The Dresden Dolls.

He's quite skilled plus he makes it look fun and puts on a great show.

learning by ear is something i did for every song i learned except for the first one
its alot easier if you take a generic fill to fill the gaps, which lets you focus on the main beats
once you get the main beat and your timings down learn the fills
thats how i did it and it works out pretty good for me
for example, i used this method when i learned harvester of sorrow
i gave the song about 5 good listen through studying the bass pattern and the basic structure of the fills (which are mostly single rolls) and any special parts (playing floor tom with bass and no cymbal onstanto )
I played through the song going light on the hits so i could easily hear if i was on general timing or not
after getting the basic part of the song down i worked on the fills (ex single roll to 2 double speed hits of the rack toms while doing 2 kicks with the 2 racks)
im sure you see where im going here
Agreed. Learning by ear is much, much, MUCH easier than memorizing sheet music.
Agreed. Learning by ear is much, much, MUCH easier than memorizing sheet music.
I find both the same as each other. Depends on the song really.

did you guys learn sheet music first, or did you learn your songs by ear first?
First thing I was taught was sheet music.
