Okay, to play a triplet instead of counting 1 & 2 & or 1 E & A 2 E & A, you count it 1 E A 2 E A.
However to play triplets on the double bass while playing eight notes on the hi hat. Would be a polyrhythm. Because you are playing a different rhythm whithin the same beat. Blackened does not have triplets I believe. I believe they are just quick sixteenths on double bass.
also does doing pushupsincrease speed of single stroke rolls?
im trying to figure how the fuck i went from struggling to do the sextuplet (right?) at the end of metallica's a week and a half ago to being able to play it pretty easily
also funny thing about being solid in the studio
toward the end of blackened before the snare delay +china hits, Lars goes off time during his fills but seems to recover from it flawless ly. i noticed it when i first started playing the song and just doing a basic run though not doing those fills
That's because he is playing to a click.
Also, I'm very interested in how you play sextuplets if you can't play triplets. Because a sextuplet is basically a triplet played completely on the right hand with the left added in.
i can play triplets on my hands fine. my instructor showed me some bonham licks that i practice to do triplets
i just started back into double bass this month so my legs arnt trained for it at all, and i cant do anything more than simple low speed triplets

Yeah, those are duplet. The drummer in that video is closing them down like HELL though.
My friend just ordered this:

Ahh, do want!
Just made a video of me doing a jammy solo, but I can't find my damn camera. I hate it when you're in a cool groove and then fuck something up so badly you're like "wtf do I do now"
i was in the hard rock cafe today and was watching a nirvana music video with footage of them destroying their instruments, including drum kits.
it made me want to punch a baby
[editline]2nd March 2011[/editline]
i don't understand how you can be that disrespectful to you equipment.
I really hate it when people destroy Good instruments. Except when Metallica was on Time Warp and they had James smash a ESP Truckster. It was awesome, but I still felt terrible seeing that expensive guitar get smashed.
I would never destroy my yamaha DTX-550X, or any other drumkit actually.
I once saw Janick from Iron Maiden breaking a pale yellow, 5000 euro strat on stage... i cringed
Probably cuz they got so much money, that they can afford it.
I remember watching a clip where Thomas Pridgen destroyed his whole DW collectors clear fiberglass set, at the end of the Mars Volta tour. All that nice equipment down the drain..

They looked like cheap instruments at least.
I may be able to get a new snare drum and some cymbals, any suggestions?
[editline]3rd March 2011[/editline]
I've been looking at Zildjian cymbals and a Pearl snare, but I want to see if anyone has had better stuff from other brands.
if i were you i'd especially take a look at either a brass snare. I really dig the pearl free floating brass 6.5" and 5" snares.
or a maple snare, i bought a costum single ply maple snare a while ago, and i really REALLY love it, single ply snares just sound so open and great, they're generally really expensive since it's hard to make single ply shells.
for cymbals i'd reccomend the paiste 2002 cymbal line over everything else, they're great versatile and just sound so good.

video of me playing an except of a song then fucked up in the end by throwing my stick.
but what im asking is how do you guys think my kit sounds? i gotta get a new reso for my snare since it doesn't have a reso on it now. I personally think my bass drum sounds like sex but im leaving it up to judgment.
im really after what you guys think of the rack toms
lurkers rate funny for good
rate dumb for bad
rate zing for sex
does it sound bad as in like a terrible kit, or as in bad tuning?
I think you could bring up the top tom a little bit. The overall sound would benefit from a greater separation in pitch.
Separation in pitch from what? The toms and the bass?
From the high tom the the middle tom. The interval between the second and the third sounds fine though.
Though I must say, I'm not a fan of the way those toms are tuned. Either the heads are dead or they're just really out of tune with themselves, but they're not resonating well at all. The sound is just dead and muffled.
I think you need to loosen your snare wires man. That snare sounds choked. Sounds sort of... plasticy? As bit said the toms sound dead.
I've got a question about a kick drum problem, i'm starting out on learning to play drums, and one of the major issues i'm having is getting my kick pedal stroke right. I seem to have to tap and release it really quick or it'll vibrate/bounce on the drum pad (got an electronic kit) and sound multiple times. It does this sometimes when I do a strong stroke even when I try and release really quickly. I've adjusted my springs and nothing seems to help, is this just a problem with my technique or is it something to do with the pad/pedal?
thats a technique problem really, i have always had the tendency to bury the beater, and unless you tune your kick drum head really high it shouldn't be a problem, but of course with an electronic kit thats a different story.
if i were you i'd look around for a kick drum pad with a mesh head as illustrated

that would probably do the trick
if all else fails you're just going to have to improve on releasing really quick, but I would barely reccomend that.

Electric kits have really bouncy kicks. What I try to do is bury the beater(which for some may be considered bad technique, even if most drummers do it). Also, switch to a lighter beater on the kick-pedal. If you need help on kick-technique, I can probably help.
Anyways, going to play a gig on sunday. It's always crap to wait for a gig. Especially when you have nothing else to do..
Edit: Damnit BassB, again!? Lol

Ah yeah, I forgot that there's different kinds of pads for it, that would probably help a lot cause the rubber has a tendency to have a dull bounce. I looked that pad up though, and goddamn it's like $260+. There's an Alesis for $90 but still, pricey stuff.

Yeah, i've been trying to compensate by keeping the beater on, but the problem with that is that i've got to basically slam the beater/push it really hard to get it not to vibrate, and that seems not too great for the pad.
e: Actually, I just went to try it again and I really don't have to push that hard to just keep it on there. I guess i've just been trying to avoid burying it because, you know, bad technique and all like you said.

No worries man. Almost all the pro's bury the beater, and many do it on purpose. It just comes down to how you like to play
Edit: If ya guys want, I can make a quick video on how to get better kick-technique and how my feet work when I play?
i gotta get a new reso for my snare since it doesn't have a reso on it now
and my toms are particularly tuned to be dead. there are a few cotton balls inside of them to get the bottom head to resonate less. i particularly like the sound. its a quick, medium attack with a very fast decay in sound. ill experiment around to try to get a better sound i guess though. i refuse to change my floor tom and bass because i love how they sound

yeah it's expensive, if i were you i wouldn't buy the roland either it was just an example, roland is expensive as hell, you could probably make one yourself if you're into these things. but overall i would recommend buying a second hand one somewhere, possibly with a torn mesh head or something and just slap a new one on it, good as new.

if you put cotton balls in your drums to deaden them you probably shouldn't ask us how they are tunes because they're gonna sound dull, dead and boring, no matter what tuning.
How much does a good entry level kit cost?
