I play for a world class DCI drumline, actually. Velocity means nothing without controlled rebound. I like to think of velocity being initiated from a quick wrist at the top end of the stroke. The natural rebound of the stick should be uninhibited, which will allow the drum do "to the work for you" in bring the stick back up. The simple physics is, the more velocity you put into the stroke, the more will be given back to you by the head. If you eliminate rebound by practicing on a pillow, you're doing extra work by forcing your wrist to perform work throughout the stroke rather than at a singular point. This inefficient use of energy creates tension and can cause a "pounding" approach to the drum, both of which will detract from the quality of sound produced. The relaxed approach you develop when you make efficient use of the rebound allows you to get a more open, resonant sound out of the drum. You're also using much less energy, which will in turn allow you to play with much more control over dynamics and tempo.
Too bad I read that after years of practicing on a pillow :( [editline]19th March 2011[/editline] Maybe that's why I have a hard time doing Moeller
Too bad I read that after years of practicing on a pillow :( [editline]19th March 2011[/editline] Maybe that's why I have a hard time doing Moeller
Since it uses rebound in the stroke, I would believe so. I used to practice on pillows, until I saw the Jojo Mayer-dvd. He has played on pads his whole life, and can play fast on anything.
i like how he can go fast on literally anything. PAD PILLOW PIZZA
i like how he can go fast on literally anything. PAD PILLOW PIZZA
I liked when he played on a sheet of thin paper. That takes skill.
i just noticed most things he drummed on in that segment begin with a P. but yes his reflexes are amazing, he manages to tap and pull back so fast and precise that the paper didn't even tear. amazing drummer. i had barely heard of him when i stumbled across this so awesome. (shame i couldn't find the high quality version, only this 240p one)
I got a drum rack for my kit today. Along with a new ride. the drum rack is really awesome, I can finally get behind my kit without tripping over a cymbal stand. And I got much better control over where I want my cymbals.
I wish I had money for one of those, and space :(
I really miss playing acoustic drums, but unfortunately it wouldn´t be possible to have such a kit in my flat. But instead I invested some money into an ALESIS DM10 studio kit, which is quite awesome!
friend that i haven't seen in forever just left. we had a nice 3 hour jam session. their band is looking for a drummer so i might be joining up. gotta start putting alot of work into metronome practice and endurance techniques.
Getting http://shop.offworldpercussion.com/INVADER-V3-Black-or-RED-V3-V3RED.htm?categoryId=-1 So fucking happy that I got the money. Can't wait until it ships. Can't wait to get better in drumline
Nice, dude. I've had the v2 for a while now and it's awesome. Although I'm thinking of picking up a lighter pad in Dayton... maybe a vic slimpad or a xymox. As great as the invader is, it's heavy as hell and I don't want to lug that around all summer.
As long as I have a good pad, I'm fine. I'm definitely taking it wherever I go; so maybe the V3 is lighter than the V2?
Well I found out what I got for my birthday. I got a Paiste 20" Twenty Masters ride, and a Pearl Icon Rack.

well it seems no matter how much i play and do straight practice, i cant increase my speed. i did a shitload of endurance last weekend between playing and just doing singles, and now i come this weekend to actually see my speed is the same, better yet a little worse. the fuck is going on? why cant i get faster?

You need to practice 1 month at least 20 minutes per day, to see progress. Hell, I didn't see progress before 2 months..
20 minutes at once or could it be divided up into 4 sets of 5? [editline]26th March 2011[/editline] there was one week where i saw a huge improvement for some reason which is what my confusion is based off of

I'm thinking of getting one of these since al I have is one pad, rudiments are all well and good but some days I just can't bring myself to do them any more and I want to just play some beats and relax. Proper kit is out of the question, and this seems to have good enough build quality and all that

Money, room, noise.
Money, room, noise.
Noise is something that's easily solved. They have these little rubber pads, you put them over the kit, I've heard about people being able to play at midnight with no issues. Money is something I understand, drumming is something that is not cheap. The rack I got cost more than half the cost of my drumkit. However I would advise you to just keep saving up. A practice kit may seem nice now, but eventually you will replace it with a real kit if you really do want to keep drumming, and when you do the resale value for percussion equipment isn't really that good. And as for room, acoustic kits take up a lot less space than you think if you know how to set one up.

I had a really cheap kit for a while, with the pads on and they still complained, and they gave a really unnatural bounce, like hitting the bed. I've never had a complaint from my practice pad though
No matter how many times I watch this, the fucking wrist speed always amazes me.
Jebus, absolutely no flying fingers, just wrist... damn. those triggers sound fucking weird
Jebus, absolutely no flying fingers, just wrist... damn.
Indeed. He's my teacher so I hope I can do that some day. One can dream.
dreaming will do shit practice will accomplish anything
dreaming will do shit practice will accomplish anything
Of course, but that kind of speed requires more practice than I have free time.
