Most of my bands have been through friends or acquaintances. You meet and play in a band with one person, then a friend of that person has another band etc etc. Now I'm in two bands, and me and the bassist from one of them, are hired to play for another band. They have two big gigs in the summer. It's more pop/rock type, but it's still cool to play.
i have no friends who can play any instrument whatsoever and the people I know that can are complete douchebags with horrible taste in music
also not playing death metal would help too
the band im sort of in likes everything from death metal to early zepplin type music, and some soft rock. sort of try to make it a point that if you guy are gonna do covers, be a well rounded cover band. you can pick up more gigs that way
It doesn't seem like there's that many marching percussion enthusiasts here, but I think this video is great for any percussionist. It's a group in Nashville called Music City Mystique. I definitely think they are going to win at their world championships this Saturday. Check it out.
i have no friends who can play any instrument whatsoever and the people I know that can are complete douchebags with horrible taste in music
thats were you're wrong, instead of denying their taste, jam with them, mix your ideas with theirs. create instead of replay. what kind of music would you play ideally [editline]13th April 2011[/editline]
the band im sort of in likes everything from death metal to early zepplin type music, and some soft rock. sort of try to make it a point that if you guy are gonna do covers, be a well rounded cover band. you can pick up more gigs that way
that comment was actually aimed at the being in a band being a sin part of meatpuppets post, but my merge got broken.
what I'm saying is that they won't and can't "jam" or "groove" and when they do they totally turn the guitar all the way up so it makes my ears bleed, and I ask them nicely to show me what else they can play, and they say "no, death metal is EPICCC" [editline]13th April 2011[/editline] Also progressive but with a mix of a lot of styles, akin to TMV. More on the Latin side, though
seriously no one else in your school?
Yea, I try to pry my Jazz/funk into everything I play. I even got some jazz-stuff into one of the bands I play in, which is a blues-band. I'm the youngest at 24, and the band leader is 15 years older than me(and he's the second youngest in the group). I know him through my dad, who knew a drummer who knew the band-leader. It baffles me sometimes how I manage to meet all these musicians. Just goes to show, that with open mindedness, willingness to listen and groove, you can get into a lot of bands. I'm now practicing double-bass, so I can join a metal-band if needed(never know when I need it).
I love playing jazz, especially when I put some latin fills into it. So fun to groove because it's so hard to get out of the groove.
I love playing jazz, especially when I put some latin fills into it. So fun to groove because it's so hard to get out of the groove.
Yea, same. But sometimes, keeping it simple is all you need to do. If you put too much "spice", it can kill the groove. The blues-bandleader is really strict on this. If I put too much "spice" and technical stuff, he will immediately stop and say that we need to start over.
I know. I try to use it very sparsely because the sparseness of the fills itself is what makes them sound good [editline]13th April 2011[/editline] It's like using long, descriptive adjectives in writing. If you use them too much, it seems you're trying to be TOO out there and fancy, and people won't like it. If you use them only sometimes, then it seems much more unique. :iiaca:
Well, it really comes down to what type of music you're playing, and what kind of sound you want. Some genres requires much speed, skill and technique, while others are the exact opposite.
I was still talking about jazz, but yeah I agree
my next, and final cymbal musical purchase (for the foreseeable future) is a ride cymbal. i already have 2 crashes, a nice set of hats, and a china, so a ride will bring it all together in a rather well rounded kit. what ride is a good rock\metal ride? i would like a sort of dirty and a bit ringy ride. i plan to go to guitar center and give some rides some taps but in the meantime i would like a few suggestions.
Sabian AAX are good rock-rides.
what are your crashes and hats? above all, it sounds like a paiste 2002 (maybe heavy) ride would be good, maybe even check out the hugenormous Big Ride paiste makes it's pretty dirty and ringy. do you want to be able to crash it? otherwise some dry ride might suit you.
I've got a bit of a problem. Last saturday I was with my band practicing as usual and then for no apparent reason a surge of pain just shot up my wrist and would not stop hurting and we had to stop practicing early, I went to bed that night with it hurting like mad. Then the next day it was fine again, no pain whatsoever but after a few hours of practice yesterday the exact same thing happened but I gritted my teeth and carried on like there was nothing wrong and was in pain for the rest of the evening and slept hoping that it would be ok again but it's half way through the next day, and it's still absolutely killing me, I have practice on Tuesday, Thursday and my band's first gig on Saturday. I have no idea what it actually is although several people think it's RSI in which case what can I do? tl;dr Drumming last week, pain in my wrist, stopped, happened again yesterday, did not stop, still hurts, gig next saturday
Rest your wrist and do stretches. Warm up befoe then gig. You should check your technique too. Sounds like carpal tunnel to me..
Rest your wrist and do stretches. Warm up befoe then gig. You should check your technique too. Sounds like carpal tunnel to me..
I don't think carpal tunnel is something thats comes along suddenly, and I dont think its a sharp pain like what hes describing.
tl;dr Drumming last week, pain in my wrist, stopped, happened again yesterday, did not stop, still hurts, gig next saturday
a sharp pain happened, and you continued through it? you probably fucked yourself up quite a bit [editline]17th April 2011[/editline]
what are your crashes and hats?
AAX 14' xplosion xs20 medium crash xs20 hats wuhan china i dont want to be able to crash it really. i also have a budget of 200 usd absolute max. i really like this ride. sounds pretty good from the few youtube demos ive seen.
These guys threw down this weekend. I got to see both performances and they definitely deserved to be ahead of the pack by a mile. In other WGI discussion, Redline got completely fucked. They played more notes and they played them CLEANER than all of the lines ahead of them, right up until the top 4.
I don't think carpal tunnel is something thats comes along suddenly, and I dont think its a sharp pain like what hes describing.
Well it basically came on as a sharp pain then continued to ache, not sudden sharp pains. And thanks for the advice so far, I've been doing as you said Thaard and I've been resting it but doing an occasional stretch of it.

And thanks for the advice so far, I've been doing as you said Thaard and I've been resting it but doing an occasional stretch of it.
I have a drummer-friend who had to give up drumming cause of pains in his wrist and arm. He got most of it playing bass he said, but I suspect it was more with his drumming. Anyway, here's some stretches that will help you. When you're gonna warm up for the concert, be sure to do it slowly to a metronome(75-80bpm). Relax your shoulders, hands and everything. Also, be sure to set everything on your kit ergonomically, so that you don't have to swing everywhere and stuff.
well im sitting on my kit right now, as for most of the day (which i was like to spend practicing chops). anyone got any fun chop building exercises (nothing with legs though)
Try 6-stroke roll. It's my favorite rudiment, and can help you get around the kit very fast.
How can divide the link between my right hand and left (right) foot when for example if i'm playing swing part on the ride: And some beat on the bass drum: If I try to play, my hand swinging always fails or starts to beat along with the bass or stops at all. How do I manage this out? [editline]18th April 2011[/editline] Any ride swinging I do fails, only straight () riding seems to be easiest to conversate with the other body parts.
LL RR L R right? (directed at thards video post)

are the LL and RR accented somehow? i dont know how to read music at all 4 hours in on the kit today woo
Tomorrow or wednesday the cherry wood I bought to make a stave cherry snare should get here. I plan on sanding it down completely by hand, bearing edges and interior.
Our cadence if anyone really cares. Our drum tech wrote it, and our drum tech marched for Blue Coats back in the day, I think he still teaches for them sometimes too. Not 100% sure on that last part though. I love the bass rolls around 46
