finally another dj who plays glitch and moombahton let's be best friends!
Haha primarily a producer, (who's been to busy with life to produce at the moment). But yeah I'm way into that kind of stuff at the moment. More than over 128bpm commercial crap. [editline]1st February 2013[/editline] And yes I'll be your friend haha [editline]1st February 2013[/editline]
Show your skills off, don't neccesarily play the top 10 mainstream hits, but keep it groovy and funky, moombahton is an amazing warmup genre. Don't do like Hardwell On Air, playing mainstream tracks, then doing a simple transistion into another, to play that track full length too.. gets boring.. very quickly.
Well the only thing people really listen to here are mainstream tracks, and the top 10 on beatport...maybe. [editline]1st February 2013[/editline]
Throw in a mixture of commercial house (dutch/electro/progressive etc - including popular songs) and underground electro beats (but make sure they're real bangers). It's usually judged on by who can most please a crowd, beat selection and then on mixing. I've won many competitions like this solely based on song selection. What kind of music does the club play? Most won't try and get out of their comfort zone only because they want what punters expect (This isn't the case rarely however). Also, I have a new mix located here: The Sounds Of Melbourne - This sound is becoming popular worldwide and I can tell you, it's fucking awesome :D
Yer I'll probably mix it up a bit genre wise too. I don't really want to win all that much. A friend of mine would probably do much better. I just wanted to give everyone something different than they are used to. Really like that mix too! going to take some idea from that :) Also I should probably add I don't think I'll actually Dj using any kind of decks. I like to build weird sets in ableton and use my launchpad and iPad to play with the tracks. Just my preference of playing at the moment.
Have a free bootleg! will.i.am & Britney Spears - Scream and Shout (Oh'Sabi! Remix) [Melbourne Tool Mashup]
You sir. Are a cool person. If I make it through to round to I'm going to use a mashup or two of yours I think. If that's okay with you that is?
Yeah that's cool! I have a few on my soundcloud if you wish to use. Also; gig log 2nd Feb - "PLAY SWEDISH HOUSE MAFIA M8". Backstory: It was about midnight; I've been playing commercial stuff for at least 2 hours, and decided to slow the tempo down and get into some moombahton and moombahcore. Half the crowd didn't like it, so they used this chance to go have a smoke or get a drink. 30 minutes in, I had an average dancefloor till a random punter asked for SHM again. [img_thumb]https://dl.dropbox.com/u/107294/gigs/2nd%20feb/WP_20130203_001.jpg[/img_thumb] So I played it. Have a random mashup I did, Rusko - Thunder (Tantrum Desire Remix) // Rusko - Somebody To Love (Sigma Remix) http://www11.zippyshare.com/v/59672096/file.html Doing a remix comp aswell, should have probably put this up when it was more finished but you get a rough idea :) http://www45.zippyshare.com/v/2945140/file.html

Bumping with new material.
I too have a few new mashups to bump the thread with. First and newest mix, I like the way it sounds but the gain levels got fucked over, I'll have to fix that. Way older mashup, my personal favorite solely because of the breakdown near the end. Another newer mix. A thing. I still don't have physical equipment, but as soon as this semester is over I should hopefully be able to start working with some real equipment and get some real practice.
holy clipping, conflicting vocals and keys, and unsynced drums batman you've got a lot to work on
I know I do, I've only just started doing this stuff so I'm just experimenting and practicing, as well as looking for some good advice/tutorials/anything. Gotta start somewhere, right? EDIT: They're all just two tracks, but I'm still extremely inexperienced at manually mixing tracks, I'm assuming it's much easier with physical equipment. I always feel like I know what I should be doing when I'm mixing, but I don't know how to do it or can't do it quickly enough.
I was mixing along to Friction on Traktor the other night, just going one deck on Traktor and beatmatching with the mouse. It shouldn't be too hard it's just about developing an ear for pitch. Cue up, listen for a second, decide if it's fast or slow, throw the pitch how far you think it needs to be roughly faster or slower, keep re-cueing and do it again if you have enough time till the next 16, then go on the 16.. then just fine tune with the pitch bend, change the pitch, rinse repeat until it's barely drifting or just needs you to keep pitch bending it every few seconds. If you're really pro, just use the pitch. No pitch bend! (I cannot do this :P) Sure you need equipment to feel like you're mixing properly but you can mix on software just like you'd mix on decks, throw a dubstep/dnb mix on (I'm guessing that's what you like, I can't hear your mashups but I saw Geordie Racer as one!) Then mix along
I have ableton and an APC40 and I don't know what I'm doing.
what are you trying to do? get traktor and do what brodi just said if you're wanting to learn to DJ.
what are some essential DJs to listen to? i'm really interested in turntablism and stuff like daft punk's "alive 2007" where they take multiple songs and make them into something new

Turntablism might not be what you think it is... Turntablism

RIP DJ Ajax. It's a sad day for EDM. Ajax had been voted one of Australia's top 5 DJs in the inthemix 50 poll, taking out the number one spot in both 2006 and 2007.
Hey guys, Recently my music has been picked up by Murdock and Diplo & Friends etc, and if I wanted, I could become a DJ and get signed with Murdock's booking agency. Problem is, I can't DJ... So I figured I'd buy a controller or some sort so I can start practising. I'm thinking of getting a Reloop Terminal Mix 2 You guys think this is a good buy to start out with? I want to get something decent, something that'll last me for a while without having to blow a hole in my wallet.
Sure. The Kontrol S2 is also a good beginner controller for the ~$400-$500 range.
Got my soundcard and cabling sorted, can anyone recommend me some decent recording software? [editline]8th March 2013[/editline] does it need to be fancy? will that effect audio quality?
Just use Audacity, it's absolutely fine as long as you set your levels right and you can export in lots of formats and bitrates.
Been using Audacity, but half the time it can't pick up the sound input, though I know my soundcard (Behringer UCA202) is picking it up. At one point it was picking up the sound but was coming through, well not distorted but it sounded pretty different and kind of distorted to what it actually should have sounded like. Tried all sorts can't seem to get it to work. Would just using a line in directly to my pc be any better?
