Do any of you guys happen to have tutorials on starting to learn mixing in Ableton using a Launchpad/Push? I've heard that some people use custom templates and stuff but I haven't gotten in to that part of using Ableton

Volume is fine running through my Numark DXM-01, but I haven't tried running that into my PC yet.

Yes! Worth every penny! Although I ran into some issues where some features don't work.. I have to call support to find out why they don't work.
Anyone here have any experience with the traktor z2? Been eyeing it for a while to replace my s4 (which sits between two 1200s and is just used as a mixer right now) and it's on sale for $599 now which is going to make it hard to pass up.

What's a good beginner deck for relatively cheap? I'm having crazy writer's block and am thinking of coping by asking for a deck for my birthday this month

It depends on your definition of 'cheap' and what exactly you're after. If you want a decent all-in-one controller you can just plug in and play then definitely check out the Numark Mixtrack or the new Mixtrack II, in my experience they're easily one of the best starting controllers and they can go for pretty cheap as well. However if you have a bit more cash to throw around and want to do some more creative stuff or want something that you probably wont want to replace for awhile then check out the Traktor S2, Novation Twitch, some of the Vestax VCI units and I believe Reloop just put out a new mid-level controller that's been getting good reviews too. No idea what those are going for but if you can find one that's in your price range and it looks like something you'd want to use then definitely check it out.
You probably wont be able to find any good vinyl decks for cheap unless you do some serious hunting around or know how to fix/service them yourself, most of the decent ones here go for at least $500+.
CDJ's can be found for cheap but even a cheap entry-level 2 deck CDJ set-up will probably cost you the same amount as a nice higher-end digital controller.

you can find entry level stanton decks + mixer combos on craigslist for like $200, thats what i started out on
obv its not pro level but you can put together a cheap vinyl setup that still works fine for beginners for crazy cheap. i even got a serato sl1 setup for like $200 on craigslist as well so you can get a serato/2deck+mixer setup for like $400 if you shop a bit, which is a pretty good setup for less than lots of the controllers that are out
So I got to see Benga & Skream a few weeks back, Goddamned their mixing is godly. They started off with UK Dubstep, then to Trap, then to Moombahton, then to UK Garage, I wrote on my iPhone "Congrats on your Album BENGA!" And he saw it, when they got off stage Skream pulled me towards them and asked me if I wanted a picture with them, while there were a shitton other people wanting to get their pictures taken with them, Then I asked Skream & Benga to sign my wallet, and Skream looked at my money and wanted to take it :( Pretty fun guys, their shows are massive, the club they played at even had the ceiling cement falling all over the place. Oh that's pretty good then. I guess it depends on where you're located. Here I've seen single entry-level Stanton decks go for $200 a pop.
I've tried out a lot of Stanton decks though and I'd stay away from pretty much all of their entry level kit unless you're dead set on a vinyl set-up and you're on a budget, their high-end stuff is really nice tho.
I'd definitely recommend dropping $200~ on a nice digital controller than some average turntables tho, at least for beginners.

yeah its a bit whacky how cheap you can get shit on craigslist in america lol. some of the entry level stantons are definitively awful but i started on str8-60's which are stupidly low torque DD tables and honestly they worked so well i can't NOT recommend them for beginners. i can't speak for vinyl vs controller stuff because i've exclusively spun vinyl and never mucked about with controllers but if you're getting into it for the turntablism aspect, starting on shitty direct drive decks like the stanton str8-60's is a godsend imo, if only for the fact that it forces you to develop a really light touch and be really precise with your scratching and all that. when i finally got a stanton str8-150 (the top of the line stanton you were mentioning) and a sl1200 it was like butter, and with that light touch from using shite tables it just feels great when you finally get on something worth using. also on a semi unrelated note im gonna chirp in and say str8-150s > sl1200s. more torque, more features, more overall control. i was a bit disappointed when i got my 1200 just because of how much everyone talks them up as the best table available.

but yeah avoid those t62 stanton entry decks or whatever theyre called. the ones with the round edges
but yeah avoid those t62 stanton entry decks or whatever theyre called. the ones with the round edges
I actually learned how to mix on one of those :v:, well the t60 (similar, but even worse). The build quality is god awful too.
str8-150's are amazing tho, one of my favourite decks. As much as I love my sl-1210 I kind of wish I just went for some 150's instead. One of my friends picked up a pair for $500 in good condition which is about the same price as a single Technics over here. He loved them so much he even went out and bought another pair to go with them, he doesn't even DJ :v:
I can't help but tell people to go digital when they start out though. I learnt on vinyl but the convenience and accessibility of a digital controller really makes it the best choice for a beginner in my opinion. Obviously if you want to get into turntablism vinyl is the natural choice.
I'm planning on buying a Numark Mixtrack Pro.
Is it worth it for a beginner who probably will just play in his bedroom?

It's probably the best controller to get in that situation, at least in my opinion. If you want to get into some of the fancier stuff like controllerism or turntablism you'll probably want to upgrade to something else or just get something different tho.

Well, it depends on how I like it and if I feel like I'm good enough to go a step further.

You should be fine with the Mixtrack then. You can still of course do some of the more advanced stuff on it so it should be a great way to figure out what you want to do or see if you even like DJing.

Okay, thanks a lot!
So I uploaded a mix with a remix of a FlyLo song in it to Soundcloud and it got taken down immediately due to copyright, re-did it without the Flying Lotus tune but kept the rest in and I uploaded it just fine. So apparently remix of FlyLo tunes = no no but there's nothing wrong with dropping an Asap Rocky track. Soundcloud's copyright system does my head in.
Anyway here's some mix wot I did: https://soundcloud.com/gorza/eclectic-mix-1
does anyone know of a controller that is similar to the traktor s2, but without the built-in soundcard? I've been looking at an S2 for a while but i already have an external soundcard, if i could save some money by buying a controller without a built-in interface it would be great
I just bought an audio 10 and two time codes, the BPM flips between 177.99 and 178.01when playing that's normal right?
Plus has anyone replaced the phono cables on a technics 1210 just discovered one channel is dead. Gonna try replacing the plug but if that doesn't work are they easy to take apart? Had them 10 years so could do with a service anyway
I done a new mix.

What a packed night.
current set up. need rid of this piece of shit behringer mixer, what's a good alternative that can be had cheap second hand

soldering new gold phono plugs solved my problem above btw.
i made u some videos for people who have just got some turntables and realise there's no sync button. these aren't meant to be fucking dead on, just two different techniques you can use :) yes i know the tunes are crap, they're just the first vinyl i dug out.
1. beatmatching without touching the platter. you use the pitch fader to speed up and slow down the track. add extra speed to nudge it forward and visa versa.

[editline]23rd June 2013[/editline]
BTW you'd do this in headphones obv. other one uploading now, it's pretty crap but u get the idea. phone crashed just as i was matching second tune.

yes i know it's not good mixing, the highs are boosted to hear on the video it's just to show a complete beginner how you could do it.
Anyone here have experience with playing at festivals?
I have to do a one hour set at Forest Festival in Belgium and quite frankly I have no idea what to expect. It's going to be my second gig ever as well and I only started dj'ing like, a month ago. I think I'm gonna practice a set on beforehand because I really don't want to fuck this up.
Any tips?
Err what are you using? If you're using something that automatically matches BPM, make sure all your tunes are the full length and play out in build down, don't try anything too fancy and you can't really go wrong.
