[QUOTE=Fudgeblood;42750620]nice dude - some of my mates & I have been wanting to start our own night for awhile now but just have no idea where to start or who to contact[/QUOTE] Find a bar with a night that isn't used for something else yet, find/buy sound if the bar doesn't have a good system, contact the bar and convince them that you're going to make them money by letting you do the night there, and then start promoting the hell out of it. It's really just a matter of figuring out all the things that you need to get done to be able to throw the night and picking them off one by one.
[QUOTE=strayebyrd;42771287]Anyhow, what controllers would you guys recommend? I'm interested in try my hand at Djing with a more elaborate direction, and utilising my laptop. all I've ever used up until now is mid-range pioneer CDJs and a fairly rudimental mixing desk[/QUOTE] Depends on your budget, I'm personally a big fan of the Traktor controllers and you can get the first S2 and S4's for pretty cheap now but there's some other controllers out there that might be better like the Vestax VCI-400 If you regularly use CDJ's tho you could always just get a Traktor or Serato DVS system so you can use them to control your laptop, then something like a Traktor F1/X1. This is better if you're playing out regularly.
Soundcloud is bullying me! I made a new thing, but I had to add it to mixcloud instead, please give some constructive criticism. [url]http://www.mixcloud.com/Raineko/rainekos-electro-house-mixcopyright-rises/[/url] First time ever making anything house-ish.
So I'm getting a Mixtrack Pro 2 and a Novation Launch pad soon, and was wondering if anybody could give me any helpful tips for DJing

But there's a cash and carry near me that sells P.A. shit and I reckon I could find some decent quality pioneers there or in the one back home in Clacton. So does anyone here spin jungle? More specifically people outside of the UK? I know it's not exactly a scene that's popping right now, all the demand in Kent is for Trap, Dubstep and House. But there's this venue in Brighton called the Volkes which has a jungle/breakcorey night on a thursday, and it's pretty much my favourite night out in the South of England
There's actually a pretty big demand for jungle here right now. There's always been a pretty dominant Drum & Bass scene but lately a lot of the old-school Dubstep, Grime, UK garage, Jungle & Footwork stuff is blowing up and more and more clubs are doing dedicated nights, which is good because that's primarily what I spin :v: Better than 101 generic Electro House nights too. Other than that all I can really suggest is just learn and listen to music. If you know all your tracks and everything that goes into different genres/styles mixing will feel a lot easier and your transitions/mixes will probably become a lot smoother. + if you know all your tracks you wont need to constantly practice new sets and routines to see what works/sounds good
Booyah, playing a show on the 6th (that monthly me and some buddies are doing) and on the 10th (the biggest weekly bass music night in my city) next month. Stoked!
I'm not a DJ but someone should play this old song I did, I'd laugh so fucking hard. [URL="https://soundcloud.com/alexnvincent/butt-naked-wonda-v1"]https://soundcloud.com/alexnvincent/butt-naked-wonda-v1[/URL]

I started getting into Trap Music, I really like Trap Music, but I can't, for the life of me, understand how to mix it. I listened to one of Baauer's 30 minute mixes, and it was like the most primordial hit sync and then fade in and then fade out style mixes I've heard this year. I mean shit I was doing when I was 8. Is that really how Trap is supposed to be played? Edit: The Mix Mentioned [url]https://soundcloud.com/liveforthefunk/baauer-mix-for-lftf[/url]
I've always listened to electronic music, even since I was a kid but I never actually researched mixing music until a couple of months ago when I went to my friends house to play some gta v. He showed me the hercules dj air (cant really remember the name) he had on his desk. He explained some stuff and I was already mixing some shit new electro house music that I didn't really like, but he said I was doing ok. On my way back home I was thinking I could get myself some gear for DJing. I am considering a numark mixtrack pro 1, any tips on that controller or anything else that I should get for that same price?

[QUOTE=Waffler;42945391]I would try and mix in & out through the breakdowns.[/QUOTE] That is exactly the fade in fade out shit he is talking about. I have the most fun mixing trap when I am doing lots of quick switches/cuts. Sometimes yo can do the double drop/layering stuff but you have to be careful with your track selection there because the super trappy hi hats and snare rolls can clash and sound shit pretty easily with a lot of tracks. Looping intro bits to tease upcoming tracks is good too. There's always more interesting stuff you can be doing if you're bored of the fade in fade out thing.
Yeah, trap is usually best mixed with quick cuts and transitions, even a couple of flares/scratches for the transition, similar to hip-hop. I've rarely heard someone actually do some-what lengthy fade ins/outs with it. [editline]25th November 2013[/editline] Baauer's probably not the best to listen to when it comes to mixing, iirc he's really not that good of a DJ. When he came here he did absolutely terrible and heaps of people were pretty upset about it. [editline]25th November 2013[/editline] [QUOTE=Knoxed;42923277]I am considering a numark mixtrack pro 1, any tips on that controller or anything else that I should get for that same price?[/QUOTE] The Numark Mixtrack Pro is pretty much the go-to beginner controller. It's pretty simple and doesn't have a lot of the fancier stuff you'll find with many newer controllers but it's more than you'll need to get into DJing. Depending on your budget you could always try grabbing something like a Traktor S2 (If you get it brand new you'll get a full copy of Traktor Pro, which is really useful), or the second generation of Mixtracks. If you do end up getting the Mixtrack tho, try playing around with it on both Traktor and Serato DJ programs to see which one you prefer.
Thanks for the words guys. I've been practicing often with the same set of trap music to better get a hang for it. I think I'm understand it better now!

[QUOTE=Oratrix;42991419]Thanks for the words guys. I've been practicing often with the same set of trap music to better get a hang for it. I think I'm understand it better now![/QUOTE] Try experimenting with new tunes as well, whenever I practice mixing I always just randomly pick songs that I never usually play. Really helps out when you need to do a mix on the fly. Not to mention you'll probably get very bored of playing the same set constantly. Speaking of which, just finished a 2 hour set at some pub - I only got a message asking me to do it an hour before I was meant to start and it took me about half an hour to drive there so only had half an hour to choose which songs to play, most of which I've never properly listened to before :v: went p. well tho - regret not recording it. I definitely need to start getting some more chilled out tunes for next time I do a chilled out gig like this.
A good buddy of mine that comes over to my place to produce all the time (and sometimes we just end up getting drunk and mixing) has been promoting the fuck out of me and him and I've got three shows lined up this month + a three night DnB DJ battle next month now. We're playing solo during the battle but the three shows this month are all tag team sets. I'm so stoked! Good friends rock.
That's what I've been doing with my mate - I hooked him up with about 2 gigs so far and I might have another 2 or 3 residencies lined up for him, in return he helps me out too. Always good to have a good trustworthy friend to DJ with. Also my second pair of aiaiai's just snapped in half at the band, they still work but I'm finally realising I need to get some better headphones for DJing.

Always good to have a good trustworthy friend to DJ with.[/QUOTE] It was kind of funny because I was in Europe on vacation for two weeks and I got back and he's like "BY THE WAY I SIGNED YOU UP FOR ALL THESE SHOWS!". I've been producing for a while and mixing for quite a while but I'm reaaaaally perfectionist about my own work so I haven't really done much in terms of trying to find places to play out until the last month or so (finally comfortable enough with my skill level) and I'm largely attributing it to him. It's great to have people pushing you to do more with your music, seriously can't be thankful enough of him.
Friday's show was fun! First time using serato (I use traktor DVS at home) so I didn't have much music loaded in to it and halfway through the set me and my buddy decided we weren't really feeling the liquid set we originally planned on playing so I had a weird time digging up the tunes I wanted to play (my music is disorganized in everything but traktor right now haha). Serato also decided to forget about a third of the tunes I DID import so when I wanted to play my own stuff and searched my name nothing came up, that was a a bit lame. I didn't really feel nervous or anything during this set though which was awesome, and we got to play for an extra half hour or so because there was no one booked to play from 1-2am and we were having trouble with one of the turntables skipping at the start. Feeling good about the next show on Tuesday!
Finally bought a Traktor Audio 8 (Audio 10 too expensive and wanted the 4 channel support) - didn't come with any of the cables except USB and I need it for Friday, and thanks to Native Instruments for not selling Traktor Scratch as a stand-alone download I had to fork out $160 to get a physical box with timecode wax delivered even though I already had some Traktor Scratch plates - so now I don't have any $$$ to get the cables :v: Tried to set up the timecode wax using my S4 as a soundcard and everything was fine, except for incredibly bad sound quality and for some reason songs are playing at ~20bpm slower than they should be even though the TT's are at the right speed and the pitch hasn't been adjusted at all. Definitely not looking forward to my set on Friday now, can already see all the technical issues unfolding. Hopefully my vinyl only set on Thursday will go well at least - talked to the guy who runs it and found out if we get enough people down we'll end up getting to use the entire club/main stage and start getting $$$ to get some-what big name DJ's in (as well as more $$$ for us)
Did you verify that your timecode is tracking well and calibrated right? [img]http://www.native-instruments.com/knowledge/images/Traktor_Pro/ScratchControlTrackingPanels.png[/img] That thing to the right of the waveform shows the tracking signal that traktor is getting from your timecode. Ideally it is two concentric yellow rings with the outer ring starting near the border of the black circle that the yellow rings are in (the screenshot one isn't actually tracking super well haha). Make sure that looks right, if it doesn't, clean your needles. Newer versions of traktor have a 'calibrate' button either above or below the black circle, let your timecode play without touching it and hit the calibrate button. Sometimes that fixes issues like you're describing. Show was awesome last night! We had some technical issues at the start (not our fault thankfully haha) that cut like 10-15 mins off the start of our set, but it was all good. First my laptop wouldn't connect to the S4 that was there (even though I have one at home that I use with timecode), so we quickly copied a bunch of tunes to a thumbstick and used someone else's laptop, and that worked for about 30 seconds and then the sound randomly cut out on the s4 even though it was still playing in traktor so we had to copy our shit to ANOTHER computer and use a different controller. We were playing at the biggest dubstep night in the city but we played a DnB set and it went off (I think because we played a lot of stuff with half time breakdowns and hip-hop vocals to break the dnb up a bit). Had a bunch of random people come up afterwards and tell us we killed it, and had a random guy buy us beers in the middle of our set. We got asked to come back in Feb (it's a weekly night and Jan is already all booked) and also got invited to play at another local night "as soon as possible" :) I'm officially addicted to playing out haha.
Ended up getting it working fine once my mate let me borrow his Audio 8 cables and I set it up with that. Not going to be bringing the S4 so doesn't really matter about getting it working with that for now. Will most likely bring down some USB's so I can use the CDJ's as back-ups in-case Traktor fails though, because I swear Traktor is one of the most unreliable DJ programs out there. Only real problem now is tune selection, my mate is more of a vinyl kind of guy so he's probably not going to bother bringing MP3's/USB's and instead just play his wax - which is fine but it's all mainly darker/heavy dubstep and I'll be playing primarily grime & UK garage stuff (it's the biggest Dubstep night in the city but they're trying to go more towards grime). Can't imagine our set working too well if he sticks with stuff like Distance & Phaeleh while I'm playing Preditah and Kahn & Neek tunes :v: Found out we're supporting/playing alongside Zeke tho which is cool
Sets went surprisingly well. We've now made our fortnightly Thursday gig a weekly thing and we're going to be in-charge of a lot of it now. Good thing we're getting more $$$ so I can buy some new records :v: Guys who got us to play Friday said they were surprised with how well we played and want us to start playing on the regular, eventually taking over. And then just locked in another fortnightly Friday residency with another group. I think I've got residencies with every Dubstep night in this city now. [editline]15th December 2013[/editline] Really want to get some different residencies - as much as I love Dubstep I want to play something different :v:
Hey guys, I'm still sitting on this: [QUOTE=Hoboiam;35644473][url]http://i.imgur.com/PILWK.jpg[/url] Only one turntable right now, though. Stanton T.62 and a Numark M1 mixer. Edit: Took out img tags, fuck that's big[/QUOTE] And was wondering if you guys think I should just go grab another turntable to finish the set, or if I should switch to a CDJ set up. I wanna learn how to scratch still, but records are really limited where I am, and spinning and mixing my own MP3's sounds way easier. Would a CDJ setup be up my alley? Is there a set up that uses wax, but still reads off your MP3's? I'm not too sure where to go from here. I just feel limited with what I have now, and am SUPER FUCKING NEW to this entire thing.
