If you're planning on getting into scratching I'd definitely recommend another turntable and sticking to that, and if you can afford it and have a decent enough computer/laptop also look into getting a Serato or Traktor DVS. Without going into details, you'll be able to control/play MP3's with your turntables. I'd only say get rid of the turntables and go completely CDJ if you didn't really want to keep scratching.
and if you can afford it and have a decent enough computer/laptop also look into getting a Serato or Traktor DVS. Edit: Or do I just gotta get a preamp?
If you decided to use Traktor this is all you'd need. Basically you just plug your turntables into the box provided, then that box into your mixer with the cords it comes with and into your computer with a USB, then you can use Traktor Scratch records to control MP3's in the Traktor program and also play regular records. [editline]16th December 2013[/editline] Then if you ever play out you can just take that with you and set it up with the clubs turntables/mixer and play MP3's, it's what a lot, if not most DJ's do now. [editline]16th December 2013[/editline] Obviously only problem is if you ever want to play MP3's you'll have to use your computer/laptop, which can get annoying, especially if your mixer is far from your computer.
Now that I'm playing out more I'm finding myself actually buying my music instead of just downloading everything and I'm feeling really good about it. I mostly listen to DnB so those guys hardly make any money off their stuff as it is and it feels right to support. It's also had the side effect of me thinking more about tunes before I get my hands on them (since they're costing me money) and my track collection is getting a lot better because of that.
Yeah, when you're buying tunes your selection will be a lot more refined. I have a bunch of pretty average tunes I never really play on mp3 but with my vinyl collection p. much every tune is a solid tune. Also going to be running a night on Boxing Day which should be fun, my mate's going to be at some festival tho so I'll be running it all by myself. But at the moment I have 3 or 4 other DJ's lined up so I might not even have to spin (even tho I want to), and I'll be getting paid $100+ for it so that's cool :v: [editline]20th December 2013[/editline] at this point I'm getting $100 a week just for making the Facebook event page
I wish i knew this thread existed before now, I am currently mixing using Traktor Pro 2 an S4 and an F1, I own an old Numark Mixtrack Pro and a Midi Fighter Spectra too but don't use them. I have been thinking about adding a DVS to my setup. Do I seriously have to buy Traktor Scratch Pro? and if so is it identical to Traktor Pro just with scratch functionality? Kinda pissed that NI would separate the software like that. Why give the S4 phono inputs and charge people more money for the privilege of using them for anything useful
Yep, I've had an S4 for awhile and was pretty disappointed to find out I had to pay $200 to upgrade to scratch (You have to buy the physical box for some reason, and shipping here is terrible). It really is just the same program but with scratch enabled, iirc you don't actually have to download anything either. DVS is worth it tho imo, at least if you're playing out
That was one of the reasons i was interested in it, so i dont have to carry my S4 with me i can just use control vinyl or cd's on whatever system is at the venue and just carry my laptop and interface
So I've been co-running this night for awhile now, but next week on Boxing Day I'll be running it by myself. Everything's fine, I've already sorted out all the DJ's and equipment, etc. But I really need to find a way to push it out there and get people to come down. The manager said they're going to be down there that night paying attention to how the night goes, and if it goes well and we get enough people down they're going to give us the bigger room of the pub/club with the proper stage & dancefloor and start giving us serious $$$ to get other DJ's in. The other night it went amazing, place was absolutely packed, dancefloor was full and everyone had an amazing night, but that was also partially due to it being my mates birthday and bringing everyone down. Besides making an event page on Facebook and just pushing that around and trying to convince people to come down I don't really know what to do to bring people in. Any suggestions? [editline]22nd December 2013[/editline]
That was one of the reasons i was interested in it, so i dont have to carry my S4 with me i can just use control vinyl or cd's on whatever system is at the venue and just carry my laptop and interface
Yeah, that's what I do now. I've brought my S4 to a couple of different places and every time it was a massive hassle setting it up in tiny booths and carrying it around. Much much easier just to bring the interface, some cables, your laptop, headphones and control CD's/Wax - especially since you can easily carry all of that + more in a backpack
Played a show downtown last night, turnout wasn't that great because it was mainly a jungle show (not a huge following for that here) and it was the day after Christmas. Had a blast though! I was closing so i didn't start until 1am. The friend I was tag teaming with had to drop a deuce at the end of the set so I got to play for like 15-20 minutes on my own which was fun. Double drops for days! I'm starting to get a lot more confident playing in front of people and I think I'm totally addicted now. Also officially have a residency at the little monthly night I've been helping my buddy with. Was asking him if I was booked for the next show on the 3rd and he told me I'm just going to be book for all of them and that he's going to keep putting my name on flyers and I'm going to keep playing haha. Stoked! Now I'm thinking about looking in to investing in a good sound system because the one we use at the smaller place we throw shows is preeeeeety janky.
So I'm supposed to put together a set for a small promotion channel, and I have no idea how to start. I'm guessing it would be better to do it in a DAW somehow though, since I'm not very skilled as a DJ. Does anyone have any tips on what I should do, or how I should start?

Find tunes you like, figure out if you want to do it in a DAW or not, and start mixing them together haha. Best way to do it is to just jump in and start on it, there's really only so much thinking you can do ahead of time.

I'm sort of confused on mixing in a DAW though. I understand how to mix, but I don't know how to get everything at the right levels since most songs are already peaking at 0 dB.

If you know how to mix, the principles involved are the same when you're doing it in a DAW, you're just not doing it in real-time with a controller.
I wanted to come in and say Happy New Year everyone. Let's play some good music this year! I DJ'd an "Ugly Christmas Sweater" party recently. A friend's band played a live show and then I went on at 11 and played until 1. I did the standard EDM/House stuff everyone knows and then switched into the trap music I've been really grooving on hard lately and I couldn't believe how much everyone else enjoyed it. I'll certainly be putting up a mix on soundcloud once these holiday festivities start to calm down.
Someone finally uploaded photos of the party I DJed on Halloween to Facebook... [t]http://puu.sh/66hI8.jpg[/t] Oh dear
looking good ;)
I put up a little mix I made. From asking you guys about trap music to here. Still got a way to go but I've actually DJ'd live out a few times in 2013 without anything on my soundcloud, maybe this will help. https://soundcloud.com/conormor/trappy-new-years-2014-trap-mix Constructive Criticism would be great, thanks guys.

The music was soo good, nothing beats deep house oldies.

Our monthly has been doing really well. Didn't bring in a headliner this month so we didn't promote aside from posting about the show on facebook a couple times and we had a really good headcount still. The bar we play at is going to start giving us a % of bar sales so we'll have more to spend on headliners. Stoked!
Hi guys. Do you guys do any mashups?
I did a new mix. It has bass music, footwork, Jodeci and Pokemon sound effects. Get on my level.
Anyone here have advice on how to set up a facebook page to promote myself?
