Ugh, I'm supposed to be throwing a club night right now but we had to pull it due to poor ticket sales. I feel like such a failure.
I don't know if this is the right place to come, does anybody recommend any software for making house music?
If you're asking that question, FL Studio

You shouldn't pull just because of bad sales because that makes you look even worse to the people who did buy tickets. You should always be prepared to take a loss on a night, especially if you're just getting it started. It takes time to build up a core following. We're starting to get a decent following for our night but it's taken a while, and we've spent money to do it. It's really worth it when you have someone tell you that your night is the only place they want to be when it's happening, or when you see people repping your T-shirts. Stick it out!

Woo! Just picked up a pair of SL1210 M5Gs including needles and flight cases for $1300. Going to get a DJM-900 nexus and get rid of my s4 soon so I'll finally be able to do 3-4 decks all on turntables (I've got a pair of sl1200 m3d already). Probably going to let one of the m3ds live in the studio in the basement for easy sampling and only keep 3 of them hooked up to the mixer upstairs though.

I've got the trap game on lock down, and I've been expanding out into the future vibes / future wave type stuff, but I'd really like to get a decently rounded collection of pop/top40/generic house EDM type stuff so that I can have the opportunity to play more gigs out. Anyone have any tips on how to broaden my horizons into other genres? I don't want to just download every track, I'd like to have what people want to hear but still have an opinionated ear about what I'm playing out.
Find artists you like and then dig through their soundcloud likes. If you're wanting more of that vibes/future wave stuff you should give juke and footwork a close look too. There's some really great juke tracks that have that really airy floaty feel to them. I would not find generic shit just to try to get gigs though. Find people in your town who are in to the same sounds as you and work with them. I don't usually play mass market appeal stuff (dnb, dark half-time hiphoppy dnb stuff) but I still get to play out around town at least once a month at different nights. If you want to play out, you need to network with your local promoters, not water yourself down.
I'd really like to get a decently rounded collection of pop/top40/generic house EDM type stuff so that I can have the opportunity to play more gigs out.
If you REALLY want to sell your soul, go to a bar/club and use Shazam on the tracks you like. From personal experience, it's not worth it. Whatever you do, don't download tracks you don't like (or at least think are OK) - if you don't end up growing to hate them, your mixing will be substandard. You can always tell when a DJ doesn't like the music they're spinning compared to their genre - it'll be sloppy and lazy at times. That being said, the crowd typically won't notice if you're mixing generic top40 badly - they're a top40 crowd.
After a year long hiatus from mixing, I'm finally getting to the point where I'm moving away from using sync. Beatmatching is pretty fun honestly. I might try to get a gig in a few weeks if I keep practicing at this rate.
I'm wanting to start mixing, what are some recommendations? I was thinking of the DDJ-SB so I can take to school for music class (They allow it).
I spent $700 on a Novation Ultranova and have never used a synthesiser before and have no idea how to use it and because of this I can't use it and now I'm sad. All I wanna do is usssee ittt

Damn, I just found this thread... I'm more of a mobile jukebox than a club DJ. I mainly do parties, events, and things like that. I run VDJ and a Numark Mixtrack Pro 2, because I really don't need any scratching or anything like that. I mainly use it for things like cue points, loops, and beatmatching.
1210s + Traktor = better than sex
Bump? Anyone on Facepunch who mixes still in 2017/18? I feel like this thread could do with some CPR. I'm a drum & bass DJ, I do the occasional show and it's probably my main hobby right now. I love the music, I love the genre and I love the thrill. As a DJ you can be much more than just a jukebox - you can be a curator of experiences. Arranging music in ways that play on people's emotions, taking them for a journey powered by bass and treble. It's great fun both for me and the audience. I've organized a few events of my own, with friends, and with other DJs with quite good reception - Our next one will likely be in February. I use a DDJ-SX2 and Traktor (with a custom mapping), though I'm considering adding two CDJs to the setup. Here's a video of me double dropping two drum & bass anthems (Chubrub - Ed Rush/Optical, Mr Happy - Hazard) in a tiny bar in Huddersfield (UK). (dunno how to embed streamable) https://streamable.com/le75z and here is my soundcloud link https://soundcloud.com/skoinks Anyone else here into DJing?
I'm gonna attempt to get into it. I want to make more mixes.
What genre are you interested in mixing? [editline]23rd December 2017[/editline] Also maybe this thread should be moved to the Creationism Corner?
