The DJ Booth - For all DJs on Facepunch (lets press sync n play)

yeah you have a point, I wouldn't want to use all of that at a gig. But I think for home use, it's fine like that, if I'm gonna play at a gig I'm just gonna take my S4 anyways or borrow a soundcard from a friend. Perhaps I'll get my own Audio 6/10 later, the X5 doesn't have an interface built in :(
[QUOTE=CreativeName;36294205]Okay so at this point I've narrowed down my options to either the Denon MC3000, the Kontrol S2, or the Numark Mixdeck (all around $500). Right now it seems like the Denon has far better build quality than either of them, but the S2 has better sound quality and a nicer layout. The Mixdeck has the least software controls out of all of them and is big (the size of 2 CDJs and a small mixer), but it's far more versatile since it has integrated CDJs and full analog inputs, plus always-nice XLR outs and mic inputs. However since I do have a Trigger Finger for cue points, FX, and basically anything else that I need, the Mixdeck is looking like the best option since it gives me the ability to mix anything. It's also the only one I've actually been able to try out in person. Also, mapping is absolutely not an issue, I don't care if I have to re-map anything. Any help here?

I've tried out my buddy's V7/X5 setup and it feels great. If you're doing all your FX and crap in Traktor Scratch it's fine. I don't think you'd need an audio interface either since it's USB, but I may be wrong since I don't know a lot about timecode systems.[/QUOTE]
The S2 has a fantastic layout and integration with Traktor which makes it feel phenomenally responsive. However, like you said, the trigger finger negates the need for loops/cues/fx controls so I'd go with the Mixdeck. I've never tried the MC3000.

Oh the X5 can't be used as an interface for Traktor? Well for home use, yeah it's fine like that, and you could still probably take the S4 or whatever to gigs. It really does suck that there aren't many Traktor Scratch mixers out there.

Hm well I guess just go with one of those Vestax ones that was suggested? DVS is kind of beyond my knowledge, sorry.
Can anybody using Traktor help teach me how to beatmatch? :v:

(Other than pressing the Sync button)

Hide the bpm counters for a start.
Tune your ear into one part of the secondtrack, I find the highs like hats or snares easiest.
Listen to whether it falls behind the first track or gets faster. If it falls behind increase the tempo and push the record forward until its in sync again. Do the opposite if its going faster. Rinse and repeat
It takes some practice but you'll get it.
[editline]12th June 2012[/editline]
Stick some paper over the wave forms too, or disable them some how. You want to learn this entirely by ear.
[editline]12th June 2012[/editline]
And by the way, having this skill will ruin every mix you listen to as you'll always notice slipped beats
[editline]12th June 2012[/editline]
So what's the cheapest way to get a time code set up with traktor pro then?
You need the Traktor control vinyl and an audio interface or "Traktor Certified" mixer. Nowadays when you buy the Traktor A10 or A6 audio interfaces, it comes with control vinyl and CDs and the audio interface. Some Traktor mixers are the DJM-T1, the DJM-850 and the DJM-900 Nexus. None of these options are really cheap though.
nice one!
so what's the cheapest audio interface? is it possible to just buy a box that will decode it, two timecode vinyl and off i go?
[editline]12th June 2012[/editline]
i've seen dvs ultimate, it's £100 for the set up. that's rather cheap but i prefer the traktor software. what can i do
The cheapest Traktor audio interface is the A6, it comes with two control vinyls. You'd need the right type of needles for the turntables, but I don't really know about those.
awesome ta.
right needles? how does that make a difference, can't i just use my needles i use for vinyl
No, they have to be analog-to-digital converters or something along those lines. At this point I seriously have no idea, sorry.

I was lucky to end up getting a DJM-T1 for half it's price on a sale once - brand new as well.
Well after only about 5-10 minutes of messing around beatmatching, I finally got it down. It's annoying to have to adjust the tempo for the next track constantly though- especially when the tempo eventually goes slightly off. But I did it (with very little margin or error) Next step is to try to beatmatch without syncing in a mix. Thank you joe588
[editline]13th June 2012[/editline]
Oh speaking of which, is there a way to finely tune the tempo where I can put it where it ends up neither too fast or too slow than the beat of the other song that's playing? Most of the time, I can't find the right spot between too fast and too slow with the Traktor lever thing.
[editline]13th June 2012[/editline]
Ok I just tried to beatmatch hardstyle and that's freaking hard.

no, you can use any needle
Also, did another mix for some mates: Figure some of you may enjoy it.

Adjust the range of the pitch fader, it's in the settings under "Transport."
Would love to hear some mixes from other people, you guys should get posting!

no worries, stick at it and you'll be able to get it perfect in about 5 seconds
[editline]14th June 2012[/editline]
err with the standard +8% the best you can get it is within about 0.04bpm, that should keep a track perfectly in time for about 2 mins
will be even further out if you adjust the range higher
[editline]14th June 2012[/editline]
make sure you ignore the sync bar which tells you if it's slipping behind or forward too. remember, ear only!
Thank you all so much- I've tried integrating it into a mix and it's pretty difficult so far, but the good news is that I haven't touched the sync button at all since I learned how to beat match! Much thanks to joe588 & CreativeName. Next mix goes out to you guys. Hope you guys like trance/prog house.
fuck it, once you know it, use the sync button. it's never right unless you grid all your tracks anyway, at least in my experience. once you have it down, just use it as a guide and concentrate on more important things.
just make sure you can deal without it though.
[editline]16th June 2012[/editline]
honestly, you're best off getting a cheap pair of direct drive turntables and a two channel mixer and learning it the oldschool way before you start with traktor.
will help you loads in the long run
I gone dun a liquid mix, not on vinyl this time just got some CDJs :)
[url]http://soundcloud.com/br0n1/liquid[/url]
I wouldn't say start using sync again, why? It's much more satisfying and fun to beatmatch and the more you practice the less time your spending on the pitch and more and more on eqing and cutting it's just practice practice practice and you'll get alot more out of it!
Anyone want to hear some dubstep? I prefer dark but I can do tearout if you want
I would also love to start meddling in deep house but I don't know artists/labels so I don't know what the tunes are :/

Ahh, well. Let's say that I got traktor from an associate of mine for a very cheap disclosure. I tried Virtual DJ, but I didn't like it too much. I want to try out DJay by Algoriddim though. However, I am interested in a cheap controller to use for small parties and just to practice, any suggestions?
Djay is pretty simplistic, if you don't like VDJ you probably won't like it.
A good starter controller is the Numark Mixtrack Pro or the Reloop Mixage IE. Both have built-in soundcards and are $250. The Reloop is all-metal though but it only works with Intel processors for some bizarre reason. You could also get the versions without soundcards (around $100 cheaper) but you'd have to get a separate one anyway, which would be around $100. What's your budget?
[editline]16th June 2012[/editline]
Speaking of which, why doesn't Serato software work with AMD processors?
I started working on my first real mashup today. I ended up just using the drum machine in Reason since I don't have Traktor 2.5 and an F1, or Ableton. It's coming along pretty well so far, I'm using Audacity to get some rough samples out then loading them into Reason since it can't load MP3s. I'll post it up on SoundCloud when I'm done.
Also does anyone have any recommendations for good DJ headphones? I don't want to deal with the headphones thread because audiophiles. I was thinking just a pair of HD25's, they have a great reputation. Any other options?
Pioneer HDJ2000s have the best reputation out there, but I personally don't have the budget so I was thinking of getting a pair of Behringer HPX6000s [url="http://www.digitaldjtips.com/2012/03/review-behringer-hpx6000-dj-headphones/"]when they come out[/url].
Yeah the HDJ2000s are probably out of my budget as well.
Made a mashup! Enjoy!
[media]http://soundcloud.com/jrfhardstyle/take-care-vs-alarma-vs-gettin[/media]
So I got myself a Vestax Pmc 05 for turntablism purposes, the s4's faders are simply too crappy for that job.
[IMG]http://i.kw.cx/upf/3486951_154657031.jpg?1340475173[/IMG]
But I do regret that it doesn't have a mid EQ, so I can't mix well with it.
No mids? What?
