Jesus dongs.
My mom works as an admin assistant to the head radiologist at the local university. Apparently, the head radiologist has kids that don't share her last name, and I went to high school with the younger sister.
And apparently, the older brother's a DJ who has a residency at a club in my city.
Naturally it trickled down that I'm a bedroom DJ to the older brother, and he told his mom to tell my mom to tell me that he wants to see my mixes. I tossed him my soundcloud, and I just got an email back from him asking me for my number so we can arrange a sit-down meeting.
I checked the company in his signature and apparently he also works for a promotional/booking company for the region of Canada I live in.
Oh man.
house mix by me

I'm working on a big mix in Ableton and an original production with Reason. Right now in Ableton I need to figure out a better way of handling bank changes on the trigger finger because right now I have something like 50-60 clips I'm using which vary in size from entire parts of songs to single drum hits. I think I'll set it up so that the last clip in a particular bank is longer than the others or I might just sequence it.

Oh fuck yes
Edit - I'm a bit nervous about jumping in like this, I'm not sure I have enough of a library and have no top40 stuff which is what the patrons of a bar want to hear usually fuck
When you sort things out, like what you're spinning, let me know. I can help you out.
Just got a new place (my first place on my own) and was finally able to stick my decks in the living room so I can have them hooked up all the time and hopefully start playing with them more often.
I used to have to move all the shit off my studio desk so I had room to set them up. I'm stoked.

Just saw this thread, my setup is:
Technics 1200 mk2 & Technics 1210 mk2 (same thing just different color)
Allen & Heath Xone:42 mixer
Sennheiser HD-25II Headphones
Traktor Scratch Duo 2
was quite expensive but i'm sure this'll last me forever... it's all i ever need.
I don't play out yet but i've been offered it before actually, but i feel that my mixing isn't that great yet.
Hopefully once i get a few tunes signed i might get some bookings out of it :D but that's in the long term ofcourse.
got a few mixes up on my soundcloud here is my most recent one:

How do you like the HD25s? Isolation, sound quality etc. I need a new pair.

Really good. seriously the best DJ headphones for that price range (got them for 150 with 1,5 meter normal cable).
but i heard good things about http://www.aiaiai.dk/store/headphones/tma-1 too. but they are 50 euros more.
[editline]2nd August 2012[/editline]
and yeah the isolation and sound quality are amazing!
Yeah I've seen a lot of people with 25s and you see a lot of sports commentators and such with them too, i guess because of the isolation. IN RELATED NEWS I'm getting a Kontrol X1 for Ableton and Traktor soon and possibly a Lauchpad later on. I think I might switch to Ableton but I'll have to test how well it works with the X1 plus the TF because eight knobs isn't enough for me.
Well, I didn't want the comp I was in, but it was most likely biased as most of the contestants new the judges well, so it was a bit unfair!
Also recorded a new mix, and it's my best one yet! Click here to listen!

I remember freaking out about shows too.
I'm there right now behind the decks. There are 0.0 people here.
just my luck
I remember freaking out about shows too.
I wasn't freaking out about the show per se but rather that
- I was opening and don't have enough tracks to do a solid opener
- My headphones are currently out of commission
- The promoter texted me at 3 to meet him at 5:30
- The promoter wanted me to bring 10 friends (I don't have any friends who go clubbing, let alone drinking-age friends)
It worked out but nobody came out. I guess it's because it's a thursday night but seriously it seems weird that zero people came.
Either way, I think I'm in for DJing during the school year.

I'm only giving you a hard time, don't worry :).
Actually, speaking of which, does anyone know where to find non-bangers that I can use in an opening set that aren't absolutely terrible?
I've got a chance at an hour-long spot at a small Burning Man festival in Santa Cruz at the end of September. I went two years ago, there were big crowds at all three stages pretty much the whole night. This year they moved it into an indoor venue and I think they only have two stages now. I just need to send a mix or two in (and come up with a name) and we'll see where it goes. Even if I don't get it I might still land next year's (smaller) one in monterey.

Longest mix I've ever done was half an hour. this should be fun. Not sure if I'm going to use Traktor or Ableton, it doesn't matter since I'd be allowed to bring whatever I wanted as long as there's room.

Genre?
Electro or prog house. I've got plenty of midtempo stuff to use before then.
I wuv my Pioneer 350, upgrading to a 2000 / 900 Nexus when I win the lottery.

Are those the Behringer 12's or 15's? Also Tezz is right, you can get close to a 10 dB bass increase by placing the subs centered together.
Wow didn't realize there were 5 pages! Im late.
Got some new gear, spent my whole afternoon learning how to use these things, as the CD Players are very different from using Pioneer CDJs. Got it for $950, and it's roughly worth $2.5 grand.

Just got an Evolution X-Session (uc-17) instead of an X1. Twice as many knobs means it's more useful for Ableton, plus it's got a crossfader.

I got an LPD8 now too. Completely modular, and I can do 4 decks on Traktor now.

If you've never even touched DJing before download Virtual DJ home and try it out for a day or two. If you think that this really is your thing you need to decide how much you want to invest in this/what medium you want to play through. Laptop and digital DJing is the cheapest while CDjs, Vinyl and Timecode is on the more expensive side but a lot of people see it as more professional looking (Though buying expensive gear will not make you automatically sound great, practice and determination does.)
On a budget I'd go with a Numark Mixtrack Pro (I did and I still use it for house parties)and then buy a copy of Traktor Pro and get a set of decent headphones.
Try and buy second hand, Mixtracks are usually pretty common to find second hand and you can save a lot of Money this way. Same goes for a lot of DJ/Sound Equipment.
