Thanks. I can beatmatch manually in Traktor, i just need to figure it out in Ableton. I think until then I'm going to stick to traktor. I switched to Ableton to be able to re-arrange things however I wanted but it the beatmixing is really that bad/nonexistant it's not worth it to me.
Ableton has a learning curve higher than eve online
http://www.digitaldjtips.com/2012/09/pro-dj-who-doesnt-mix/ i agree with some of his points about how the music is more important than the mix but I fucking lost it at "In a way, I do it just to look busier." Nobody should be doing anything to look busier.
Drunken idea that a few friends and I came up with while I was DJing haha.
So Pioneer have announced the new CDJ model. What do we think?
It will be INSANELY overpriced, like all of their CDJ's. They have a monopoly on the market, and aren't afraid to abuse it. Their CDJ 800's are the only products I'd consider buying, mostly because they aren't packed with useless features.... Also, the screens are pointless. 90% of DJ's don't BRING cd's to gigs (other than control cd's). You mean I get to see the Serato "Beep" waveform on that screen?? AWESOME BRO!!! Integrated effects on turntables are WORTHLESS when using any form of software. Effects need to exist as the MIXER level, because all you're modifying on the turntables is the control noise (as an owner of turntables with build in effects, trust me I know how pointless it is). Damn near every feature these things have are either assuming you'll be bringing a fuckload of CD's to your gigs (which also means you're bringing these CDJ's yourself, as no club is going to ever evolve from 1000's for quite some time), AND aren't using control software of any type. The moment I open my laptop and fire up Serato, damn near every "feature" is useless because of the mechanics behind time control CD's. Expect these to MSRP for over $2000 each... Worth it? NEVER. [editline]6th September 2012[/editline] Edit: MSRP $2150. LAWL. http://www.zzounds.com/item--PNRCDJ2000
YES THIS 100X FUCK Pionner is so overpriced it's not even funny. Even their crappy 'consumer' controllers, the ERGO and the new weGo or whatever it's called are double the price of similar products. They're trying to add computer features to their outboard devices when if you wanted those features it would be so much better to just use MIDI. And there are things like the zoomed waveforms (congrats, you're about 5 years late to that party) that can and should be added via firmware update. They're desperately adding all these HID control features when 99% of people using their decks are perfectly fine using control CDs, or just ignoring them and using software. and yet people are still going to buy and love these things. [editline]6th September 2012[/editline] the only product of theirs I have any desire for is maybe the RMX1000 because there's not really anything too much like it. They're like the Apple of DJing but worse. [editline]6th September 2012[/editline] also I can't WAIT to see all the hardcore CD guys' reactions to having a sync button now.
also I can't WAIT to see all the hardcore CD guys' reactions to having a sync button now.
DJs on twitter have been going mental all day lol
does beatmatching somehow make you more of a dj if you can beatmatch 7 wavs of levels at once
no, because it's levels
Pioneer are the apple of the industry. I wouldn't mind purchasing those though, so many useful features, and the price tag was expected, but hopefully this means regular 2000's & 900's will go down in price!
Just read through the thread, haven't checked it in awhile! Basically, I got a gig just as one of my Cdjs busted.. NDX 200s... one of them broke! Not suprising considering they are possibly the worst cdjs you can buy! So i had to postpone the gig as I couldn't get a mix together but... POW!!!! Just got an 800mk2 to replace the broken one and i'm saving up for another 800mk2! It's going to be a bit mismatched though for now ahahah! Hopefully i'll be able to put a mix together for this gig and it'll be my first time playing out! FIRE! Cannot wait to drop tunes on proper rig :D Basically the main problem with cheap cdjs is they aren't fast enough loading the track and cueing up, say i drop a track out and want to mix another one in on the next 16 bar.. I'm stood there staring at my cdj while the phrase goes by and i'm upset because i could be smashing in another mix! I think it's going to be more frustrating having an amazing deck and a shit deck than having a broken deck and a shit deck because i'm going to always be lagging behind on the shit one! ahh well not long until I get another shiny toy :D Anyway, I didn't come here for nothing! Listened to the mixes i hadn't heard yet on the thread and i'm impressed, high calibre stuff for a rag tag bunch of facepunchers! I'd be really happy if you'd check out my new one, liquid mix.. on my old dodgy decks but I hate to blame equipment, if you learn on the shit stuff when you get on the good stuff you'll blow it away! http://soundcloud.com/br0n1/liquid-mix Check it out, Liquid Drum n Bass :) People, you may shit on Pioneer but... They will not BREAK! If anything breaks on it, it'll be the cue button!(Protip: Friend told me the other day... Stop tapping on the cue button, just tap on the casing.. you won't wear it out then) Those things are built to last trust me but if anyone can tell me otherwise i'm happy to listen but i swear they are built like tanks! Long life shit!
Nice mix. What mixer were you using?

Long life shit!
eh, why not get some used technics with DVS? They are cheaper than your CDJ800 and better to mix on than a CDJ2000. I don't get what people like so much about CDJs when you can do a lot more with some old fashioned turntables and an X1
Yet another mouse/keyboard mix I made so I got something compact to listen to while I travel next week
DM1001x, if you mean me CreativeName. My first mixer I got it for a tenner and it's taken some abuse over the past year and a half is still going strong with no faults so far. I don't think i'll even upgrade it for awhile until I feel like playing around with effects. Thanks aswell, spent awhile trying to get it all in key but I don't think it is... Hard to do man! Despo I started out on Vinyl granted not Technics, I was thinking of getting some 1210s and toying with the idea of getting timecode but I don't like it, I've seen it die or be faulty so many times. I would only ever use Traktor at home idk maybe thats dumb because so many djs swear by it..but i've also heard from a few people that their main worry turns from "What am i going to play?" "Whats the crowd going to be like?" "Is the promoter going to be a dick?" to... "Is Traktor going to work?" anyway because of this I want my daily setup to be roughly what I'd play out on.. so cds it is! Just can't afford lots of vinyl right now. I don't mind burning lots of cds and I don't mind carrying around a cd wallet. You are right though you're sacrificing that vinyl feel which I love and agree it's cheaper Yes, I view it as a good investment though I'll have these decks for a long long time. Nice selection Oatmeal. Very chill, I'm not great at naming my genres around the 120-130 area my mate is like NO it's techno! or NO blahblah :P but i like! Mostly house/deephouse? Gunna record another mix now, theres one ridiculously hard cue point to hit that hinges on two double drops.. pray i make it.. :D

http://www.zzounds.com/item--PNRCDJ2000
awesome. i want. a lot. wondered what everyones moaning about with the OMG THE NEW PIONEERS HAVE A SYNC BUTTON NOW ANY1 CAN DJ. fucks sake, i keep saying it but beatmatching by ear is piss easy. it's the very first thing you learn. cdj's have had beat counters for fucking years, how is a 'sync button' any different. sure it's a bit funny getting the ear to start with but a few months practice and you have it. forever. no need to rely on software. it doesn't matter what you use, whether it be two beat up 1210's or traktor, it's all about the track selection and mastering. [editline]11th September 2012[/editline] that said, it's still fun to blast out on some vinyl and a two channel, back to basics! but djing has evolved. there's so much more to be done, infinite possibilities!
Agreed, beatmatching isn't that hard. the only time i would use sync is if i'm running some 4-deck traktor setup where I can't be assed to do it or if it's later on in the gig. Besides people only really notice mixing if it's really shitty or if there's "that guy" who sits in the corner analyzing the mix and what you're doing. [editline]11th September 2012[/editline] and "that guy" is probably a DJ himself. I've been djing with some other guy (both using timecode) who was using serato on his windows laptop while I was using my Traktor on an MBP. His laptop crashed 3 times during the gig and I had to take over because his antivirus fucked up. The difference here is not that I have an MBP or use Traktor over serato, the difference is that my laptop is DEDICATED to djing and does nothing else. I don't have no antivirus, my MBP doesn't even know what the fuck the internet is and is used for nothing but djing. And it works perfectly, and I don't think it'll ever fuck up if I keep it that way. As a general rule of thumb, serato is more stable than Traktor, but if you keep your laptop clean both will work flawlessly everytime and I don't ask myself "will traktor work?" because it will. Seriously try it yourself this way, before you blame timecode for the stupid mistakes of other DJs. :/

I've tried timecode vinyl round a mates on his 1210 setup honestly I loved it but like I said I wouldn't play out on it because my laptop, freezes every 5-10 minutes for a couple of seconds and I just find cds less hassle to play with. Though everything I said as you've pointed out is mostly the point of the lack of tech guys and fuckups by the djs. I understand the points your making man but each to his own and for now I enjoy using cds, I'm not saying I won't go down the timecode route in the future but now, I can chuck a cd wallet in my bag, have it there all the time and rock up somewhere and play a few tunes, can't afford another laptop and two cdjs are cheaper than that! I appreciate the advice and I'll definitely DEFINITELY take the dedicated laptop idea into hand when I go timecode. I'll have a mix up later :) Dark/Techy Dnb
That's a good thing for all laptop DJs, even if you can't dedicate your laptop entirely, there are still things you can do. Turn off wifi and kill your antivirus, open up your task manager or whatever Macs have and kill everything that isn't essential to the functioning of the computer and your software. Also make sure the laptop is elevated, this really helps with ventilation. And if you're still not sure, it's worth grabbing a cheap CDJ like an Axis 9 or something with a premixed CD and tossing that in your bag in case the laptop really fucks up.

Can't help you out really without burning that one and trying to beatmatch it but from the sound of it those little pops at the beginning are actually on a 4 count.. with the pop being the 1. Yeah just counted it and I THINK I'm right, the kick comes in on the same count on the 1 aswell If you've got a good ear you'll be able to figure out how those hi hats are supposed to be placed and get a feel for it with a few listens, just go off the kick being 1 and try to get in your mind where everything else should be placed in the bar. Also, I think this tune has to be mixed in every 32bars rather than 16 as it's got a two bar loop..then it goes four bars when it drops..actually it's pretty all over the place! ahah. Again might be wrong! Heres a dark techy mix! It's about 20 minutes short, I've got to a hit a cue point for two consecutive double drops that comes after a drop into nothing and it's not on a 4/4 count...I can hit it 1/3 times.. Which pissed me off because this recording was tiiiiight and I wanted the rest of it but I couldn't recover fast enough..╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ ***UPDATE*** Re recorded it! with the 20 minutes on the end :D http://soundcloud.com/jake-green/dark-mix
minimal dnb is the worst to mix. if you have any tips on how i can improve cdj mixing with tunes like this it would be greatly appreciated
No special tricks there really. Just get that first kick lined up and listen for the hats being in time with everything. They're skittery, but they're definitely hitting on beat.
"that guy"
Ha, that guy is me. that's the problem with dj'ing, it's hard to ever enjoy someones elses mix for what it is instead of judging it.
Same with producing too, if you spend some time working on a track yourself it's kind of hard to just enjoy music as much.
Ha, that guy is me. that's the problem with dj'ing, it's hard to ever enjoy someones elses mix for what it is instead of judging it.
I'll judge but unless they're trainwrecking or just being really sloppy, I can still have fun. Drinking also helps significantly haha.
Same with producing too, if you spend some time working on a track yourself it's kind of hard to just enjoy music as much.
I totally disagree with this. I've been producing for 5-6 years and I still love hearing new tunes.
I totally disagree with this. I've been producing for 5-6 years and I still love hearing new tunes.
Yeah but ever since I started DJing I break down every track I hear into constituent instruments and think of the record as a bunch of layers (which it technically is). It doesn't take away from it or anything, it's just a lot different than how I used to listen to music.

I feel like I have more appreciation for well produced/written music now. It's also fun pointing things out in songs that your friends haven't ever heard when they are showing you a song that they listen to all the time and you've never heard before. (what a fucked up sentence that was). [editline]13th September 2012[/editline] On an unrelated note, going to see DJ Craze next friday and wish that I was that good the whole night.
