Avoid alcohol, avoid drugs. At least until you're comfortable with it sober. You don't know really know how you're going to react. THAT SAID HOWEVER, a shot of something warm and fuzzy like bourbon, scotch or even sambuca really warms up the vocal chords before a performance, as well as give you an extra boost of confidence. It sounds cliched but once you're up on stage, just start playing your song. It goes all smooth from there. If you're confident in your tunes and in your playing then there shouldn't be a problem. If you're not confident in either, you should be putting some more practicing hours in. Once you get up on stage, it should all flow pretty easily. I don't even really worry about a lot of what I'm doing on stage, it all just kind of comes out. Stay focused on what you practiced and know you're okay! It'll all go smoothly.
But bourbon is best cold...
But bourbon is best cold...
I was referring more to the feeling you get in your throat when you drink those.
I realize this is a big bump, but you'll be scared like fuck until you start playing, and then it all comes out. I've opened for bands like Jamie's Elsewhere, and next month I'm playing with Arsonists Get All The Girls. It's really fun, especially if the crowd is getting into what you're playing, you just have to feed off the crowd's energy and let them feed off of yours. And if you decide you like it and start playing shows and get a band and such, try to be social with people at shows and not a douche. You instantly start getting known :D
