I know what you mean. I have determined it is impossible for me to scream, growl, rasp, or do any type of extreme metal vocals.
I'm not sure why, but I think it's because I drink milk all the time. It's all I drink. And I hear milk is a big no-no when it comes to extreme metal vocals.
However I have found that my voice has a lot of range in the lower registers of clean singing (in my opinion, anyways; it sounds good to me). I've found that I seem to have a really clean, crisp voice. With a little concentration I can drop it into a really deep pitch, almost like opera singing.
However, I can not sing without music backing me up. I've tried and it fails. I do a lot of singing to Five Finger Death Punch and Machine Head, though. (Machine Head's "I'm Your God Now" off [i]Burn My Eyes[/i], Most the songs off [i]Through the Ashes of Empires[/i], and then Five Finger Death Punch's "The Bleeding" [minus the screaming part], "Never Enough", "Hate Me", and then the clean parts in the rest of their songs.)
I really like singing to "Never Enough", though. It gives me really good practice, because of the minor tone variations in the chorus.
