So, I haven't checked out the site yet, but from what I can tell from what you guys have said here, does the Filmmaker beta currently only support TF2 content?
If that's the case, I think I will wait until the full public release. Especially if it will be able to support mods. There's some pretty neat things out there - off the top of my head, imagine a high-quality film made with Filmmaker using content from the mod Dystopia? That'd be cool.
DOTA 2 machinimas will be great
Imagine this tool having its own Steam workshop where the community could post maps, models, characters, sounds and a bunch of other stuff for a fantastic collection of assets.
I'd love to see War of the Servers remade with this.
They added a 'Pyroland' category for the models list in tf2's hammmer. Only thing in it, is the cat from meet the pyro

Steamwood.
Does this mean we can have more hl2 based movies like war of the servers? I'm exited!
1:40 - 1:42
Okay I'm sold.
Take my money, Valve. Just shut up and take it.
My biggest concern about the Source Filmmaker is that it would have the same restrictions as the Source Faceposer, which is to say you can only use existing animations, meaning that if you want your models to do something that they're not rigged to do by default, you have to build the animation yourself.
Did you even watch the video? They specifically showed that filmmaker is also an animation tool, meaning you can just not use any pre-made animations and just animate everything yourself and the animation tools look incredibly easy to use.
Edit: Whoops, all the tutorials are on the site http://www.sourcefilmmaker.com/
Porn is inevitable.
Still a good tool though.
Video tutorials for this are starting to pop up in the channel, but not in the right order.

They're all on the main site to watch. Seems like all of them except lighting is unlisted for some reason.
I'm not usually interested in film making stuff, but this looks pretty cool.
Considering some of the stuff people have made with gmod I am very much looking forward to when the community get their hands on this.
I mean good videos too not the generic rubberfruit stuff.
So does this mean Source Filmmaker clips will one day be as common as GMod clips?
Doubt it. It's quite a bit less accessible than gmod.

If it does I feel bad for the people who put so much effort into making source engine machinma's like MaxOfS2d.
But lets be honest. The majority of videos will be the equivalent of Garrysmod "random" films with wacky TF2 ragdolls doing wacky things.
Doubt it. It's quite a bit less accessible than gmod.
You serious? It looks a million times easier to use than gmod for movie making.

He'll probably just move over to it since only like 10% of his videos are really in gmod. This'll completely take out the need even for that.
Welp, I guess this means stop-motion machinima is oficially dead
Good night, sweet prince
I didn't get a beta key :<
A lot of the questions on the survey were applicable to me, and I have quite a decent gaming PC aswell.
I wonder what else it is that you need to qualify?
Does this mean we can have more hl2 based movies like war of the servers? I'm exited!
They mentioned that they will expand to their other source games, so I'm guessing garry with work with them to implement it on Gmod 13 or something.
Did you even watch the video? They specifically showed that filmmaker is also an animation tool, meaning you can just not use any pre-made animations and just animate everything yourself and the animation tools look incredibly easy to use.
Did you even read my post?
There's a reason I said 1:40 - 1:42
I said that my concern up to this point was that it was only skeletal animation. As in, until this video, I feared it was only skeletal animation.
1:40 - 1:42 explicitly says that is not the case, and this is what sold me for this tool. Hence why I said "1:40 - 1:42" and then immediately afterward "take my money, Valve."

You're joking, right?
This tool is infinitely more powerful than Garry's Mod for making machinimas, while at the same time remaining fairly user-friendly. Obviously it's not as straightforward as Garry's Mod, simply because all the control you have over everything (the timeline, for example), but for all the capabilities that have been added to this tool, it's still surprisingly simple to use. All you'd need are a few days, a few tutorials, and a few mess-around sessions to get the hang of the tool.
Have you ever tried to use a tool, like Henry's Animation Tool, to make an animation in Garry's Mod?
The tool is great, don't get me wrong, and Henry did a great job with it, but it's still a pain in the dick to make halfway-decent-looking animations with it. Things like gravity, for example, constantly get in the way.
Combine this with the fact that, for current gmod machinimas, setting up different shots and lighting becomes an asinine chore because you have to constantly move things and potentially re-pose and reconstruct the animations, and it gets to be painful very quickly.
Many gmod machinimas are mediocre at best, and those that are of higher quality usually utilize techniques other than in-game animations, such as stop-motion or the Source Faceposer tool in the SDK. Which is to say, these high-quality "gmod machinimas", in all actuality, don't use Garry's Mod that much, or they don't use fluid animations like Henry's Animation Tool provides - they utilize other methods and tools.
With this thing, though, you won't need to worry about any of that, and everything is done in this tool. The ability to change small details of animations or lighting or camera angles after the animation has been established is infinitely useful.
This tool will be amazing. I just hope it won't be too long before it's expanded to use HL2 / custom content, and released to the public (AKA no having to sign up for a beta).
I spent many hours learning face poser, demo smoothing, demo rendering and hammer. Fuck.
I spent many hours learning face poser, demo smoothing, demo rendering and hammer. Fuck.
These are still useful though.
I spent many hours learning face poser, demo smoothing, demo rendering and hammer. Fuck.
Now it'll be a hundred times easier! :D
These are still useful though.
Not face poser, all of that stuff can be done in SFM.

RIP Gmod machinimas
(I'm only joking so don't get your panties in a twist)
when they changed the perspective on the meet the videos
holy dicks
WE CAN REANIMATE MEET THE HEAVY OOOOOOOOOOO
I fully expect a flood of Meet the Heavy parodies for several weeks. Most of which will probably be awful.
This might be a reason to get back into animation, though I've only done 2d stuff.
Fantastic stuff, this is going to do for Source machinima what MCC Sandbox did for ArmA2 mission making.
I'm quite excited for this and have been ever since the leak. This kind of stuff is right up my alley. I loved tinkering around in the gta editor and this is far beyond that level and yet, simpler.
It seems pretty easy to use as well as shwiggan here demonstrates:

And that's on a very old and very buggy build of the SFM.
