Oh, I didn't see the other post asking the same question.
Even people who do know history still seem to be keen on repeating it. Humanity will always find one way or another of waging war and conflict against one another. Look at how many wars/conflicts have happened since WW2. And things aren't about to change.
disagreed. the sheer fact that that idea is shared by practically everyone is the only reason we will continue fighting at all. if you dont like war, do something about it. saying its inevitable is somewhat the definition of counter-productive. history is studied in schools so everybody has an opportunity to reflect on the mistakes we've made and make sure they never happen again. not trying to argue, but try to have a more positive outlook on the future. its better than condemning it, which only results in everyone else following suit and living in fear and distrust
I really wish they could show pictures of other beaches too, every nation had a beach to clear, it wasn't just Omaha. Juno beach (where the Canadians landed) was just as bad as Omaha. I'm not sure if the other beaches were as extensively covered by the media though, so that might be why they always post pics of Omaha.
Is that how that P47 crashed, cause of the blimps?

Juno beach was no where near as well defended as Omaha.
People who dont know history, repeat history.
That's true.
It's a little bit disgusting, considering what happened there 70 years ago, but then you remember that that's pretty much why all those people made the ultimate sacrifice, so that we could have the right to have fun on a beach.
Yeah that's what it was all about.
Those pictures are amazing
Yeah that's what it was all about.

but then you remember that that's pretty much why all those people made the ultimate sacrifice, so that we could have the right to have fun on a beach (among many other things, of course).
? It was an example, no need to get snippity.
seen a few of those pictures before but the one with the p-47 wreckage is a fantastic photo.

where are the brits and canadians?
where are the brits and canadians?
Well there aren't as many pictures of them because America had far more troops than them and by extension, far more pictures taken of them. But there is at least one pic. of Canadian troops in the OP.
Actually Omaha was worse than the others.
Omaha beach was so bad because the defenses there didn't get bombed. All the other landing sites were heavily bombed, including Omaha but when the scheduled bombers arrived just before the landing there was a thick fog, and the bombers, not wanting to hit their own ships, dropped the bombs too far inland to actually hit the bunkers. Every single landing craft except for one also missed their landing point, and each boat had a specific task but the whole plan went to shit because of that and entire boats were mowed down before a single man cleared the ramp. Juno Beach was also a horrible place to be in the landings because it was so short. You landed, and about 100 feet ahead was the shingle. Plus there was a bunker which covered the entire flank of the beach. Take a look at the bottom photo of this picture, it's the view of the bunker facing out, the same view the german defenders had of the beach. Imagine some landing craft on the shoreline, then imagine a machine gunner in that bunker. That's what led to the death of ~350 Canadian soldiers.
I'm surprised at the pictures of the German prisoners, from what I've read, many of the German defenders at the beach were denied surrender- especially the MG crews, who were shot on sight.

Just Polish Volksturm conscripts that didn't want to be there.
