Late 1700-early 1800 France was one of the most modern and powerful military's in the world at the time they wiped the floor with everyone, until they got ganged up on. I always think of that, but still the piss poor leadership of WW2 always makes the jokes seem relevant, I don't want to hear shit about WW1 though, they were hardy cunts then too, even more so than the Brits.

The *Would not* thing is a sorta joke thing, it originated with "would not fuck, elbows too pointy" that being said I always liked the AK, it was the first gun I used and will always have a nostalgic place in my heart for burned out cars and terraced housing along with long alleyways covered in graffiti and the odd blood stain. The fear and hatred too, it was something else.
Would not*

The AK is alright, imo the one above is the sexiest looking of them all.
Generally there is a catch that grabs the slide as it flys back as the last round is shot, when you put a new magazine in you thumb the catch down and let it fly forward thus loading a fresh round into the chamber, however if there is one round in the chamber and the slide is not locked back you can put a new magazine in and keep firing.
Ah, useful. Now I know how to use most pistols! Some pistols I've heard requires you to press the trigger to unlock the slide to reload.
So question to you all here... what's your favourite real (as in, was or is currently issued) uniform design? Doesn't need to be about the actual performance of the uniform, just the aesthetic.

Hate to say it but either the Soviet or Gestapo/SS uniforms, Really. they're just so cool. I detest the nazis but i love the SS uniforms.

Do you know what the requirements of the hearing test are for the British Army?
Are there any possibilities that the current Iranian military can inflict damage on other countries?
Depends on who.
If you take something as Israel, for example, then yes. The Israeli military is not prepared to deal with a threat that large for something longer than 1-2 months (with conventional weaponry, at least). It's not called the Israel Defense Force for nothing- Our military isn't designed, and isn't capable, of large scale attacks beyond our own borders. The IDF mentality was always to put up a strong defense and win wars on enemy soil, not Israeli one. With a large enough force from a country that isn't close to our border, we could get overwhelmed after a while.
If you're talking about something the size of, say, the US military, then lolno. The Iranian military wouldn't make a dent on the massive war machine that is the US military. They would get completely crushed in a week, if not less.
The thing people always seem to consider is number of men, or technology, when there's a lot more to it. The Americans not only have the most budget, loads of manpower and amazing technology, they also cannot be trumped when it comes to planning, strategy and organization. Most large armies in the world don't have any of that. Israel ain't got shit on an eighth of what the US army can do in terms of organization, And we've had something like 10 wars in the last 60 years. I doubt the Iranians would fair much better than us.
Is it worth joining the air cadets if you're thinking about joining the air force?

France has won 109 of its total 168 total wars, which is one of the better track records of a country that's been around as long as France has. The only reason they surrendered so early in WWII was because they still hadn't recovered from WWI, in which 5.7 million French casualties were suffered. In 2010, France spent the third highest amount of money on their military in the world, behind North Korea and the US. All of that adds up to France being a strong military power.

Also they have about 300 nuclear warheads.
The Byzantines had a very powerful military during their heyday. They were able to outlast the Western Empire by utilizing a more flexible and versatile army composition as well as adapting new techniques and positions depending on who they were fighting. The Theme system was also used to great effect after the Muslims began their invasions. These new military units were each under the command of a single strategos, and they were further divided into separate units all the way down to the squadron level. This modernization of the military structure might have been what saved the Byzantine Empire from destruction in the 7th Century.
The standard Byzantine army consisted of heavy infantry known as skoutatoi or skutati. These men were armed with swords and spears (although usually the first rank of each battalion used a spear, for fending off cavalry charges). The skoutatoi were supported by many archers armed with composite bows. Many of these archers came from the Trebizond region where they were trained from birth. The Byzantines also use cavalry extensively, especially mounted archers and auxiliaries. Heavier cavalry was used, including late period cataphracts. Byzantine armies were usually balanced; however, cavalry was used as a decisive element in many Byzantine victories.
The greatest Byzantine general is, of course, the famous Belisarius. Belisarius defended Emperor Justinian during the Nika revolts, and he was rewarded with an army with which he was to reconquer much of Rome's territory including Carthage, southern Hispania, and Rome itself.

Hey. It totally depends on your trade. You can check the website or of course pop into a careers office. Obviously having H1 H1 hearing will open it all up to you. I think H2 is accepted for most trades too but don't quote me on that.

I'm not sure what I am. I'd be looking at joining as an officer if anything really, Infantry or and armoured regiment.
Related, I'm an Army Cadet at the moment, absolutely love all the exercises we do, hopefully should playing CIVPOP and/or opposition forces for a TA exercise in February.
Hopefully going off to Sandhurst in a few years once I ditch this wretched degree, won't catch me in an infantry regiment though. Far too much like hard work!

Unfortunately you don't really have a choice in Sandhurst, although it does (well, can) depend on your degree. The higher calibre people tend to go Infantry. I would say go REME (Wooo!)

actually the reason they surrendered in WW2 was because they built up all their forces on the french-german border and not at all near belgium, refused to help belgium, and then germany invaded through belgium. the french military was so soaked with victory that they decided no frenchmen had to die so they built a massive line of artillery and fortifications and absolutely refused to deploy out of there.
it's even funnier when you realize the french had the german invasion plans yet refused to use them to their advantage.
Im going for Sandhurst too to become an officer after sixth form or after University.
Not sure to much yet since you can apply at 18 or after a degree. Going for Royal Military Police or Royal Engineers. I've looked into it and talked to various officers about it and it seems like a good deal. Not sure if I should be a regular or TA officer though. Any ideas on which one to choose?

What's your actual job any way Pyro? I either never got round to asking at camping, or was pissed when you answered cause I don't fucking remember it.
Ive always thought about joining an armoured regiment, but all of the budget cut stuff has put me off. I might go for the TA instead.

Of the five people I know who've been, they all got into what they wanted to. Two Royal Engineers (wooo!) and the other three were Gunners.
You get two choices when you get into inters I believe.
Would love to go Military Intelligence, but they only take one or two an intake I hear.

@ LordLoss
I'm an Avionics Technician in the REME. I essentially look after all the electronics amongst other stuff in the Army's aircraft.

If you want a career: regular, if not the TA (still very good).
Personally I'd recommend the Royal Engineers as you can get some very good trade training to help you in civilian life after (ie. getting a job). Plus no one likes the RMP!
It's a hard thing to get into :v:
Least it's not in the line up to be binned... :P
A more realistic choice would be engineers though, visited 35 Armoured Engineers in Sennelager a couple of years ago. Had all the shiny new Trojan AVREs, they were awesome.
Personally I'm going to do a degree in the Geology field, so maybe Geophysics or similar, and then consider applying for Sandhurst. But the Army has always appealed to me and cadets has only strengthened that appeal. And if I did go I would want to go for Infantry or Armoured. Fusiliers (kind of because it's the regiment my Cadet unit is attached to) or Rifles really.
I just hope my hearing doesn't let me down.
Any tips on using iron sights?
Just for future reference, of course :P

Mort and Charon, there is a trade for a Geo Technician in the Royal Engineers.
