it's so sad nobody seems to like the seal. it's so gosh darn cute. it bows and does flips and smugly puts its hands on its hips! it can make balloons out of water!
Holy fuck Pokemon Pearl and Diamond was released nearly 10 years ago

I was undecided over who I liked best at first but this official illustration sold me on Popplio:

I love that they're making it so that there's more to their design and personality than you can just gleam from them in one look, it adds so much. There's always stuff like this that you can learn from Dex entries and whatnot but I feel like they've lately been making more of an effort to make these quirks add something visually to the starters, like Chesnaught merging its arms together to form a shield, or Braixen removing the stick from its tail to use like a wand. Popplion's gimmick is definitely more of a behavior-based quirk rather than a physical one, but I still really love it. I really hope Popplio or its evolutions get a signature move based on the bubble-based acrobatics seen in this illustration, or else this might as well just be an illustrated Pokedex entry.

The other starters illustrate what I was talking about a bit better:

There's text on the official site that says that Litten has really greasy, flammable hair, and it can shoot out flaming hairballs to attack. It also raises the hair on its back while attacking to form spikes.

Rowlet can turn its head really far in a lot of funky angles. Not quite as interesting as the others and kind of a given for an owl, but it adds a lot to its cuteness.

Also, yeah, it shoots its feathers off as projectiles.
I-I liked Oshawott...
I think I've realized why the owl and cat look so different from the other starters of their type, though.
Each starter is generally shades of green, shades of blue, or shades of red, orange, and yellow for grass, water, and fire respectively.
They may have other details, like black parts or colors associated with the other starters, but these parts are typically no more than half of the body.
On the other hand, the owl is orange and white with green highlights, rather than green with orange highlights.
And the cat is 75% black with red highlights, whereas Cyndaquil and Tepig are less than 50% black. The red parts are a pretty vivid red, too, whereas most starters (in their first forms) have a more red-orange color.
This is also why Chespin stood out: it's mostly brown with green highlights.
You're definitely right about the Fire-starter but I think it has a bit less to do with color for Rowlet.
That might be part of it, but I was thinking about it and I think it has more to do with the shape. Every other starter so far is segmented so that its head is distinguishable from the rest of the body. Rowlet's apparent lack of a neck of any sort, plus its smoothness gives it this oval shape that makes it seem much more simple than all of the other starters. And I think the really blank, absentminded look on its face in the official artwork, while charming, sort of compliments and accentuates its unique simplicity and makes it stand out in kind of a weird way. It also seems a lot stubbier than every other bipedal starter, I guess?
Don't get me wrong, I like Rowlet and Litten but my brain is having trouble accepting them as starter Pokemon after playing this series my whole life and subconsciously picking up on the design trends and I think they'd feel a bit more at home as regular wild Pokemon.
Design wise I think the fire cat is a little iffy because of the face markings. Water seal is kinda goofy but I thought that about Oshawott when it was first revealed and now I think its adorable so I dunno. Grass owl was the only one that stuck out as a good design to me, really. But then again it's just an oval lol. Also it's really cute
I don't like the seal because of the collar. Reminds me of clowns.
Nothing against clowns, like any fear or anything, but I hate clowns. They just look so fucking dumb.
The owl is better than Chikorita, which was literally a banana.
The cat might be the worst of the fire starters, but that's not really saying much, since all of the fire starters look good.
The seal is as bad as Oshawott.
IMO, Chimchar is by far the worst fire starter ever. Him and his evolutions look like shit. I really hate the designs. I'm ok with every other fire starter and its evolutions, except for Tepig's. Don't really adore them, but they aren't bad looking I guess.
So yeah, Chimchar is probably the only starter I don't like at all. The 4th gen starters all don't go down well on me anyway for some reason, but the other two just don't come close to chimchar at all.
But I gotta say, I absolutely love gen 2's starters, with 3 closely behind. I don't know why, if its because they are from my very first game, or if its because they seem to have this specific way of looking or something, but I just love gen 2 starters and pretty much everything else.
I can't decide between Bowtie Owl and Edgelord Cat.
tbh edgelord cat is the only one that doesn't look retarded to me
definitely gonna go moon though, that legendary turns into a fucking death star
Idk which game or starter to get yet, have to see evolutions first.

Expecting good things from edgelord cat, but we're probably gonna get some purugly shit

I don't think it's a clown thing, it's more of a performing circus seal like this.
