I'm an atheist and I think the whole rabbit and egg thing goes as follows, Rabbits symbolize purity, Eggs symbolize rebirth, the rebirth of purity. Just a thought.
Then what preceded the beginning of the universe?
We do not know.
Do not confuse a lack of understanding as an excuse to make shit up.

Or it was a tradition created by nature-worshiping pagans.

i.e. the original hippies
One word- CANDY
Because easter involves rabbits and eggs.
I wouldn't know, I'm Agnostic.
Easter is a biblical time. So why do Atheist celebrate easter? Does that not contradict the fact you don't believe in god?
Here's a little story that answers your question.
I am an atheist. I don't have too much of an interest in Easter. I don't even know what day it is. Mom expects me to come to the family Easter celebration. Again, I don't know what day it is. When it comes up, I already have other plans and decide I can't make it. She flips the fuck out, starts crying and going on about how I don't care about her or my family. Family members get on the phone & talk about how they were planning to have such a nice dinner and put together parts of the menu with me in mind. Et-fucking-cetera.
Pretty much the same thing happened two years in a row. I give up. It's not worth it. I celebrate easter.
It's an excuse to get candy.
I like candy.
Family forces me to.
And nothing is better then chocolate on a stick.
NOTHING!
I celebrate Easter to have fun with family and sometimes friends, and to eat candy. Fuck God.
Its simple because chocolate eggs are orgasms for the mouth.
I'm agnostic so fuck the lot of you! Hur Dur.
It's because we like bunnies.

easter (and christmas etc.) are no longer christian traditions. they are traditions of western society as a whole.
[editline]03:51AM[/editline]
this is due in part to the fact that these holidays are very profitable for the big corporations ;)
[editline]03:53AM[/editline]
basically, what i'm saying is that easter is no longer about the death and resurrection of jesus, but it's about the easter bunny and buying/eating chocolate. Just as christmas is no longer about jesus' birth, but about family and giving/receiving gifts. Of course, to most christians these holidays are still religious, but to others, they have nothing to do with god.
Because of all the chawclatez. :v:

If you knew anything, you`d know it was never about that in the first place.
Everyone keeps avoiding my point but whatever.
Until 90% of shops stop closing on Easter, I'll celebrate it.

Celebrate Easter = Eat chocolate
Until 90% of shops stop closing on Easter, I'll celebrate it.
They could make so much more money by saying open and selling last minuite easter eggs and crap.
If you knew anything, you`d know it was never about that in the first place.
i never said anything about "the first place". at some point in the past it was about jesus and shit. now it isn't.
god you're a faggot
America is such a fucked up society
It seems that everyone goers against their beliefs
Hell, children are starting to think Christmas is about SANTA CLAUS
I know it's because of fucking capatalism but you'd think that even though its not a damn holiday they'd take their kids to church to learn their religon

Yeah, Jesus was born during the summer, the Christians just took over a pagan tradition.
Yeah, Jesus was born during the summer, the Christians just took over a pagan tradition.
I was talking about in general
Go up to an 8 year old kid and ask them what Christmas is about
Try not to act suprise when they say "Santa Claus"
I'm not saying celebrating and shit is bad, but damn if you're celebrating because of you religon you should know what the hell you're celebrating
Basically, what I'm trying to say, christians warped traditional holidays like christmas and things too much, I'm not saying celebrating is bad, but they should teach the younger generations (hell, some need to learn it themselves) the meaning of these holidays and incorporate it into their festivities. They shouldn't even be partaking in these festivities if they don't practice their damn religion, like most Americans don't. I can't judge for other countries since I live in America however.
(I know Easter is sort of different, but I'm talking about in general)

But Christmas isn't even christian in the first place, they just pretend it is.

No, you're not getting my point. It's not even this. I'm trying to say if they're going to celebrate a holiday at least practice the fucking religion. Most Christians won't get off their lazy ass and go to church. I would be a lot ticked off by this if they would just follow their religion or convert to atheists. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to get people to support atheism nor am I trying to turn people against it. I jsut want people to stop acting like hypocrites and be what they're fucking supposed to. In fact, many religions are strictly against hypocrisy, including Christianity.
i don't see it as a religious holiday any more. I don't believe in anything but still I celebrate Christmas and Easter. it have developed more as an unreligious holiday here in sweden. :P
I don't celebrate Easter, I buy chocolate eggs for people and eat other's gifted chocolate eggs.
Easter holiday has nothing to do with Jesus. Christians nowadays have morphed it to be that way. When Christianity was integrated with Paganism, they just renamed a lot of the holidays. Easter Sunday is actually Ishtar Sunday, named after an ancient Queen of Babylon of the same name.
Noah (as in every animal on the boat Noah) begat Ham who begat Cush who begat Nimrod. When Nimrod's father died, he married his mother, Samiramis, and became a powerful King and hunter. One day, Nimrod was killed by an enemy in battle and his remains were scattered across his kingdom. Semiramis ordered them to be gathered and they found all but his reproductive organs. She claimed he couldn't be resurrected without them and instead had ascended to the sun to become who we know as Ba'al, the sun god, today. She also claimed she was immaculately conceived in an egg that came down from the Moon goddess and landed in the Euphrates. Semiramis became known as "Ishtar" (pronounced 'easter') and her egg became known as "Ishtar's Egg". She then became pregnant and attributed it to the rays of the sun god, Ba'al. She gave birth to a son named Tammuz who was a great hunter like his father before him. He was also particularly fond of rabbits (furry lol) and by this time Ishtar's religion had really taken off. The rabbit became a sacred animal to adherents of said religion. One day, Tammuz was killed by a wild boar. Ishtar claimed that he ascended to the sun with his father where they now live as father, son, and holy spirit. She also proclaimed a forty day period of sorrow each year (Lent) prior to the anniversary of Tammuz's death. No meat was to be eaten during that period, and worshipers meditated while making cross-shaped symbols with their hands and eating cakes marked with a cross. Every year on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the Vernal Equinox, they celebrated with rabbits and eggs. This celebration became known as "Ishtar's Sunday." It was also said that since Tammuz was killed by a pig, one must be eaten on that day (Easter ham). Passover is the actual commemoration of Christ's death, and Easter can fall as much as three weeks away from Passover. Lent, Easter ham, rabbits, eggs, and hot cross buns and the celebration thereof are actually anti-Christian symbols and celebrations.

Chocolate, that's why

That is not useful as it's not accurate. Might be considered to be amusing satire though.
