they're particularly humorous phrases, but the first one is more of a "wise old man" saying

Can someone also help me with this? I don't think anybody's awake in Germany now but worth a try. I'd like to see where I went wrong with my German paragraph.

Well, that's how far I can help you (I have horrible marks in German). If you have a word with ä, ö or ü, just write ae (ä), oe (ö) or ue (ü). Means the exact same, only without the "special" letters. You don't need to capitalize country adjectives like you need in English. Hope it helps you a bit.

Here's what I was trying to write in English, if it helps.
[quote]My name is Zack. I've lived in North Andover for 11 years. I have two kittens, but I only like one. I've killed many people, but only in a videogame, of course! I'm French, Irish, and Italian. French is a bad language, so I learn german. My favorite year is 1998. It was the best. The music, the culture, everything was good in the 90s. I like building computers. My friend, Victor Krogan, is very mad. I like it when he's mad. It's funny to me. I post in a German forum in German. It has helped me with my German. They help me with my grammar and vocabulary.[/quote]
My chance to re-submit it is gone now because the fucking librarian at our school can't seem to fucking come to her job on a consistent basis. You're getting paid to sit in a fucking dead library fr 5 hours with the newest Mac computers.

Hab ich. Es funktionierte ja auch lange Zeit. Bis Mittwoch Mittag.
What the hell is dative, it doesn't make any sense to me as an English speaker. It's just like the object of the preposition in English right?
So if I say he is 'by the river' I would say 'Er ist durch dem Fluss'?? Or 'Er ist durch den Fluss' because it's not a situation where you would do that? DAJSFHASDf
[editline]3:33[/editline]
Also I'm not a dumbass for not understanding something we're learning in German class because we haven't covered this yet, I'm studying ahead.
[editline]1st April 2011[/editline]
I guess that would just be the object of an accusative preposition.... so I guess that has nothing to do with dative
still, what the fuck is the dative case
[editline]1st April 2011[/editline]
ok, so to my understanding, if you use a dative preposition, much like when you use an accusative preposition, you must change the article to fit with the preposition you used?

here is how the prepositions work
DER goes to DEM
DIE goes to DER
DAS goes to DEM
PLURAL goes to DEN_N (preposition is den PLUS add an "n" at the end of the word)
well I know THAt, but I don't know how the dative case works. That's what I'm asking. In which situation would you change those articles, when you use a dative preposition? Or is there some magical german rule for doing so, that an english speaker would never understand? I think all languages are controlled by language overseers that purposely overcomplicate them to annoy people trying to learn them

I think the rule is that if you can add "to" or "for" in the sentence, it's dative.
Like "I will buy a gift for her" could be "Ich werde dem Geschenk ihr kaufen"
Or something like that, I think that's wrong but it's close.
