The island was Purgatory
Honestly, I watched the show originally as a real 'fan' (I got into all the crazy conspiracy shit, even made maps of things in games that we'd only seen a hint of in trailers or leaks, I was really into it). I haven't re-watched it again since the original run but still I can't even bloody remember what was going on half the time. I do remember that people were SO sure the island was some kind of purgatory, and it got so vitriolic that forum moderators were giving people 24hr+ temp bans for bringing up the topic because it would stir up so much shit...
I think in the end the island was essentially like some sort of life form. It was a barrier stopping some kind of evil force from being released (the 'cork' at its heart). It could hide itself, travel through time, translocate people, all sorts of funky shit to try and protect itself and whatever it was holding back I guess. There are some great sources of information out there if you google "lost what was the island" for example... I can't really remember it all any more, I haven't watched the show since the original run.
Personally I really preferred the simpler style of season 1 - people trapped on an island, mysterious things happening, no one knows what's going on. Once it went past that and started to go into what the island is, its history, inhabitants etc, I don't know... it wasn't quite as enjoyable in some ways. I remember when the show started, the theories about the noises in the jungle, the smoke, the HATCH... oh god did we have some fun :D
If there is Shepard guy in the story - [sp]he will die[/sp], ending gonna be weird, maybe even bad for some. Approved my Mass Effect and Lost.

the island isn't purgatory
the characters ARE in purgatory in the flash sideways parts of season 6. a lot of people get confused with this. when the characters died in the real timeline, they went to purgatory. once all of the characters were dead they were allowed to move on together to heaven/hell/the afterlife (which is shown by the scene in the church in the final episode). people died in season 1, people died in season 6, people got off the island (kate and a couple others) in season 6, and once they lived the rest of their lives they joined the others in purgatory
the whole point of the purgatory part in season 6 was about the bonds between the characters, they couldn't move on to the afterlife without eachother
if we can't live together, then we're gonna die alone

there is no ~explaination~ for some of the odd things on the island, how can an island move through time? they must be dead because it isn't real! is what a lot of people think, but it's just science fiction/fantasy. it doesn't need an explaination.

i fucking love lost. i'm currently on my third viewing of it, and i love seeing it all again and picking up on little things that i wouldn't have known the first time round or hadn't noticed. no other tv show has engaged me like that
The ending was about Redemption and that's exactly what the show was about
Ben for Deceiving the Surviors, [sp]Killing Jacob[/sp] and [sp]Murdering Locke[/sp]
Boone with his constant failure to do anything right
Charlie with is addiction
Desmond with Cowardice
Hurley with his supposed "Bad Luck"
Jack with his relationship with his father
Jin with his relationship with Sun
Kate with her past as a fugitive
Locke with him being in a wheelchair after his father pushes him out of a window
Michael for being a terrible father
Sawyer for being a Con man
Sayid for his life as a Torturer in the Iraqi Republican Guard
Shannon with his selfishness
Sun for not being able to become an individual
Every single character was redeemed in one way or another, some sooner than others, but the show and it's ending definitely are connected with one another
i was going to explain the redemption parts but this guy has done it best
couldn't take the story seriously. I'm sorry but I can only handle so many pointless, meaningless, and explanation-less things like the smoke monster.
did u watch more than like 1 season? the smoke monster is one of the forms of the man in black
I've watched the show twice, once when it first came out and then again a few years ago, I still don't fucking understand half the shit that happened. I can't even remember the ending, I remember there were some fantastic episodes and others that are utter tv shite.
Can someone, quickly break down and explain the basic plot?
Ease up mate, I know... that's why I put a Kappa after the purgatory line ;)
Gotta rewatch Lost again some day soon. Mum never got to finish watching it with me so I might see if she wants to go over it all again soon. Would be great fun.

sorry, I didn't mean for that post to sound so hostile :v:
LOST is the pinnacle example of the saying "It's about the journey, not the destination"
If you refuse to enjoy the entire 6 seasons because you don't like the small wrap up at the end then you need to reevaluate your priorities.

God I love that song. I love all the music in this show.
Michael Giacchino is a god.
Now that I really think back, holy shit this show was big. Atleast in Finland & Sweden, like on par with how GoT is today.

I remembered when it was ending, they played this trailer, and it kinda hit me how big this show was (and I became sad). There were actual people out there that were like this. A couple of my friends and I made lost costumes and went to a season 6 premiere party. It was amazing!
No, people do ask each other for items, it's Sawyer stealing things for personal reasons. But of course I'm sure you're much smarter than everyone on the show and would have a perfect survival system set up within hours.
YES! I would have a survival system in minutes after the crash, and I can do it like this... "ahem Can I have everyones attention, thanks." "Okay were going to need to build a signal fire and gather supplies, so lets divide up into teams". BOOM I DID IT!
And if Sawyer hogs everything, and they have to steal it from him, then why do they ask him for alcohol later and he quickly gives it to Jack????
P.S. Follow the cable out to the ocean, while sailing in a raft. It will eventually lead to civilization, and they have all the food in the world for the trip!

So you watched like the first 2 or 3 episodes?
Also, you realize they do build a signal fire in the first episode, right?
Learn to watch the show before making a comment, seriously it's explained in the show
Poorly. Didn't make it to the end, got to a point where I was just like "Ya ya don't care anymore"

Then you're seriously missing out if you thought those few were the only good ones. Like really. I mean you could say anything past the first or second season was shit and I could accept that, but come on now.

So you're just expecting for every question to get answered in the first 3 episodes?
I really enjoyed the show when it was on, i remember getting up really early to watch the final episode. The thing i enjoyed the most about LOST was all the mystery, there were so many things that weren't explained right away and there were lots of hints and clues that caused people watching the show to have different theories about all sorts of things.
I was very disappointed with the ending. The main reason i disliked it was because in the end, most of the mystery and clues had meant absolutely nothing. As an example, for most of the show the numbers 4 8 15 16 23 42 had appeared everywhere, were hidden in places and made out to be a big deal, but in the end they are just explained away by a single line; "They're just numbers". Obviously answering everything would be very difficult, but things that felt important turned out not to be. There were so many things that just lead to nothing and were left completely unanswered, or the answers they did get were a complete let down. It also seemed like throughout the show there were hints that some of the mysterious things could have quite dark answers (especially relating to the DHARMA initiative) but they didn't lead to anything really, either.
I didn't really mind that it had a happy ending, but i would of preferred something a little darker (perhaps it all loops back so it keeps repeating, or the flash-sideways was how things would of happened if the plane hadn't crashed, or they just altered the timeline completely).

Before complaining, try watching more of the show so you can find out if they actually do that or not.

The show became a lot better on rewatches when I wasn't trying to figure out the answers to things and I was more paying attention to character development and themes. It made me realize that the mystery is supposed to take a backseat to those two things. Each character completes their arc [sp]before they die[/sp], so it creates a more fulfilling watch when you just focus on the characters and the themes present and you forget about wanting to get all the answers.
So you're just expecting for every question to get answered in the first 3 episodes?
Nope. I watched up until season 5. It became such a convoluted piece of shit that I just stopped caring at that point.
I think the show suffered from being stretched out too much but still needing something to get people to watch next week's episode
Season 5 the show kinda fell off for me but it recovered in season 6 cause it felt like they were actually wrapping things up
Season 5 was actually probably my favorite, I thought the time travel stuff was really cool and I liked seeing more of Dharma before they all got killed.
Nope. I watched up until season 5. It became such a convoluted piece of shit that I just stopped caring at that point.
Got to series 5 and stopped caring, clearly good enough to keep you pretty much close to the end
Any Kate centric episode can be safely skipped without losing anything
Kate is a garbage character
Hey guys if Juliette was told to spy on the survivors but didn't want to then.... why would she tell the others that someone is pregnant? Wouldn't she just say "nothing here go away", it would have saved a lot of trouble. OH YEAH, but Lost doesn't make sense, I forgot.
