AFIAK, Doge used to just be another way of saying dog on tumblr, not just the one, somebody posted a picture of a shiba inu doing something the comic sans text (I think it was something about computers), it spreads around, people call it a cute doge, people start making more of them, it gets spread to Facebook and other sites where people think doge is the name, it reaches Meme status

Meme cultures piss me off so much. It starts with the original image (in this case the original 'doge' picture) which is funny (well I found it funny at first). Then people add their spin on it and it's quite funny still. But then people like shitty meme pages on FB, 9gag etc. repeat the same shit over and over again.
What I'm trying to say is, memes are exactly like 'killing a joke' by repeating it way too often
