In the seventh grade, after spending weeks learning about the U.S. Civil War, a large test was coming up. A class mate needed answers, so she asked me "Do the guys in gray want to end slavery, or the guys in blue?" I told her reluctantly, "The guys in blue." At which I then get asked "They were from the Northern United states, right?" At that point I had already walked away. I can not begin to fathom the amount of things my class mates have said this year.
I'm 18 and I don't know much about politics. But that's because I get so sick of being around friends that are political debators that I really choose NOT to know much about politics. They're less annoying that way. But I like learning about history. Especially wars. Learning about different wars throughout history is always cool. [editline]12:01AM[/editline]
Some girl had a picture of Fred Astaire in her binder and I asked her if she liked his movies. She said she didn't know who it was and she had it there as it went with the era we were learning, colonial America.
:psyduck:
Darn whipper snappers.
I will say that I am not referring to all students, but after you hear people just calling others "tryhards", it seems a tad difficult to have any faith left in your student body.
I've never heard anybody called a "tryhard." Are you in 3rd grade or something?
If you study proper Anarchist philosophy, you will find some admiration in it.
Hell, I'm 14, I watch CNN, and I know a whole lot more than the fuckwads at my high school.
I've met people who think that Saddam Hussein did 9/11. [editline]02:05PM[/editline] There was also one kid at school a year ago who didn't even know what 9/11 was until we told him.
Most kids don't. There are some exceptions.
Now it seems logical that kids wouldn't know much about international affairs, that's understandable, since they're just kids and it wouldn't interest them. However, today I saw that to the extreme. In this history class, there was an ongoing "class debate" on which idea was better, set up by the teacher. And the task today was to write the "Hows, Whens, Wheres, and Whats" of the idea. I chose communism, and as I was writing, this kid comes up to me and tries to get some cheap answers out of me, despite the fact that he doesn't even know my name. And then he says quite possibly the stupidest thing ever, "It's like, in Russia, right?" I look over at him, I chuckle, and I say "No, it's really not." Follow this up with about 20 minutes of the teacher asking questions about 2 of the groups (Communist and Socialist), and people giving me funny looks as about only 2 other people answer these questions. So tell me, do the kids in your area appear this lazy and overall oblivious to ideologies and international affairs as mine do?
no you just chose communism=dumbest shit ever bro
When I was in Year 9 (9th grade? I dunno. It was three years ago so I and the other people in my class must have been 13-14 years old), this girl in my history lesson asked "wait, wait... so who won World War Two?"
I am glad I attend a private/finer school where everyone is so damn intelligent that I feel like a retard.
No. We are actually quite current on world history and events. Politics, too. We often use political activities (class votes) to decide things, real or not.
Apart from learning from previous mistakes, which human adaption already covers, since when has knowing your history proved useful to the future?
I love history. However the problem is that i mainly know about snippets. And those are mainly only coming from ww2. There's just so much to know. I'd say the only thing kids need to have is a general interest in the past. You don't need to bash them for not knowing the specifics. That's what you are there for. Share information.
About 99% of my classmates are complete fucktards who don't know shit about history. Two weeks ago, in US History, one of my classmates asked the teacher "Didn't slavery end in the 1950s?" I wanted to kill him so badly.
There's a guy who thought that Stalin was a good leader in my school, and then tries to argue that the Polish military did absolutely nothing in the war. I completely destroyed him on both arguments and all he was doing was constantly repeating himself, then my history teacher (who also polish) joined in and we double teamed him. I walked away from that argument with the smuggest look on my face ever. [editline]03:36PM[/editline]
Thank god for my highschool, I'm only a stupid freshmen and we just got into our end of the year project where we have a list of Eco-friendly topics we think up, tree farms, photovoltaic cells, wind power, alternate energy, etc. etc. We choose one, and do a big paper about how it's sustainable, eco-friendly, environmentally friendly. :allears: I love my highschool. Which makes me wonder what other normal highschools learn about.
Do you live in San Francisco or does everyone just drive a prius in your area?
I've gone to community and a higher level college, and there are idiots all the same. I don't know why people don't realize the same retards in your classes saying dumb things are the same ones who's parents/somehow amazing test scores get them into the same colleges.
Those are the only ones, The rest are just colleges.
Kind of an ignorant thing to say. http://www.topuniversities.com/world-university-rankings Also, unless you're the elite of the elite you can forget about entering a top 10 college.

Mix that with social awkwardness and you've got one hell of a retard.
I've never heard anybody called a "tryhard." Are you in 3rd grade or something?
No sir. This is in high school, I'm a sophomore.
You should see my class. The teacher was talking about Hitler, and said he declared himself Führer at some point after he got power in Germany, and two or three girls interrupts him and say: "Whaaaat, I don't understand?! His name is Hitler not Führer!" It's basically like in Chemistry when they can't understand that Silver and Ag is the same thing, and then complains that the teacher doesn't know what he's talking about. Jesus Christs I could go on with stupid anecdotes (not always related to history...) about my retarded class, like one guy who didn't understand how the smoke-detectors could work when there was a power outage.
I know more about History than you know about a Springfield rifle from back in the Revolutionary War days.
I share the pain at my school... In the 8th grade we we're discussing aircraft (my old social studies teacher is an ex airforce colonel.) Now as we all know... Discussing the AC-130 is pretty much the godly point of discussing gunships. We we're asked to write a paper on it... I'm the kind of kid who is a bit of a military/history buff so I was sitting there writing down how the AC-130's origins started with WW2 Allied bomber pilots forcing all gun turrets forward and begin strafe runs on enemy positions ,and then I went into discussing how the gunship was made in the Vietnam War to attack Vietcong supply trucks running the Ho Chi Min Trail. Then I feel a warm breath on my neck.. I turn around ,and see about four of my classmates jotting my notes down. I basically asked, "Why the hell are you writing my notes down?" one of them replied, "Your writing my notes down!" I then put a smirk on my face ,and began to troll the kid a little bit, "Alright... When was the ground concept for AC-130 made?" he replies in the most idiotic remark ever, "Oh I saw this in CoD! That one mission with the Gunships attacking Japanese boats!" I really began to ball up my fist wanting to knock his jaw out of place for being such a retard. Another occasion was in the 6th Grade... We we're learning about WW1 ,and I wasn't really that much into it but I had enough knowledge to know the basics of how it started, who was involved, and how it ended. We had to roleplay people in the war... I was roleplaying my great great grandfather who was apart of the British Light Brigade ,and some classmates were roleplaying similar groups including German Officer and Foot Troops. After we were done with our assignments I heard the must retarded remark relating to the Spring Offensive by the Germans... "Isn't that Blitzkrieg?" After this point... I was pretty sure it was gonna be a long three years for history class.
According to my teacher, he had a student, that did not know where Canada was.
Ummm, I don't hang around kids and everyone that I was friends with during high school were intelligent people. Just get into honors classes and you don't have to deal with stupidity.
This is really true. Go into honors and the amount of idiots decreases drastically, but there are still a few who don't give a fuck about their grades.
This is really true. A friend of mine had to write a report on World War 1 in the form of a letter home from a German soldier, describing what life was like. He put random words in German together and submitted it. Then, of course, there are a couple of kids I skate with who are completely and utterly convinced that the Americans had machine guns during the Revolutionary War.
Engineering fraternities don't throw that good of a party I assume. I'm going to Michigan Tech so I think there is a lot less party parties and a lot more lan parties. I was up visiting friends who go there and got involved in the TF2 lan party, 12v12 is so much more fun when you know people. Tech universities seem to have less dumbasses, at least from what I've seen.
God, the lameness is just oozing through my keyboard.
You sounds like a smug little shit OP, no offense. But yeah, My class is alright. The half that know their shit, at least. The other half make less shit than when I come to class baked. (not often, and usually when I think we're watching a movie or something)
I fucking love learning about history. Politics i dislike. I choose not to really be involved, the whole thing is....ehh.
Girl in my geography class argued with my teacher saying that Africa is a country. A friend of mine wrote a letter for English pretending to be a British Major during World War 1. It was so ridiculous I thought he was joking, it involves a hand grenade taking out a thousand of his men, A nuke being dropped on the battlefield so he runs away and comes back with a gas mask to look for survivors, his friend "Micheal" walking around with no skin on and begging the narrator to kill him, and then the letter finished with the words "TELL MICHEAL'S WIFE I'M SORRY" The teacher just wrote a question mark underneath and handed it back to him.
