more importantly, why do you think beating advice into people's heads works at all?
if someone says "i'm depressed", you know what really wouldn't help?
"stop being depressed".
some israeli hack who barely speaks english
Whatever about the rest of the post but this is just xenophobic bullshit
Seith might be a lot of things but his english is very good
But his wording is very mechanical and bizarre.
yeah i hate foreigners that's why i think seith's english is bad
his english is bad because i'm pretty certain he doesn't realize what he's typing half of the time, that's why the responses don't make any sense.
either you believe Seith's english is bad or that he's insane. personally, based on my previous interactions with people who don't speak english well i'm inclined to believe the latter.
Nah I'm pretty sure he really is that dogmatic and says what he means to.
And using "some isreali hack" as an insult is xenophobic, not that you think that he "can barely speak english" which is bullshit anyway.
between you and Guy Mannly lies the suicide booth i'm sure.
listen, how about you just not talk about depression at all? i think you'll do everyone a favour, okay?
goes twice for ms. "EVERYBODY has to force themselves to do things to get through life".
How about you answer my question, so we can clarify for good what is it I think about depressed people instead of you assuming you do know what I think.

He said it was self-diagnosed.
This thread sure seems Super Friendly.
Whether it is self-diagnosed or not do the two of you have any idea what depression is like?
Depression isn't about being a crybaby , it's about being unable to do anything you like because you don't like anything anymore and everything feels painful and difficult to do
It's a disease, not a state of mind
You shouldn't talk about what you don't know

Guy mannly and seith have a tendency to throw shit advice around like they are some sort of life scientists, it's no wonder things get tense when they decide to do so. If you're nice and put more thought into what you say, you'll be treated nice
I've been diagnosed with chronic depression. I certainly wouldn't have expected it, as I don't really receive any of the emotional effects, likely due to my schizoid personality disorder. Due to childhood circumstances, my emotional development didn't really occur, so I have this tendency of repressing both negative emotions subconsciously.
Though this analogy might not be the best, telling someone who is depressed and has developed agoraphobia to just go outside is like telling a heroin addict who wants to stop doing heroin... to stop doing heroin. Even if they are initially successful, relapsing or the psychological issues manifesting in another form is bound to occur as the wiring of the brain is still the same. It takes a lot of work in therapy to make any permanent kind of change.

I came home from a friend, haven't gotten out in a couple of weeks, and he invited me to a local event with his family and we're going to be playing music there, so I'm trying to prepare what I should play there. I feel nervous but good, really good. I'm going to do my very best to be talk-active and have loads of fun. There will be alcohol so I bet I will have fun.
Point of this post? Social events are generally good if you have a good attitude. As a guy who has grown up with parents taking me to local events and parties all the time but who always ended up sitting at the doorstep crying wanting to go home this is still tough.

Bullshit. That info is irrelevant as it is self-diagnosed. Why do you rush to comfort him on the basis of uncertainty? You shouldn't talk about what you don't know, especially when I did not dismiss actual depression.
just because it's currently self diagnosed doesn't mean that he can't possibly be professionally diagnosed for it...
my assumption is that he just hasn't yet visited a doctor/therapist
what happens in internet communities when someone proves themselves to be more trouble than they're worth time and time again? i can't remember
They get moderator status
ouch :c

your info is irrelevant because it's complete bollocks, and i can't for the life of me see how you can say "You shouldn't talk about what you don't know" without bursting into flames due to a massive paradoxical existence.

because you need a doctor to realize you are depressed, right?
unless you frequent a mental health worker for mental check ups, a self-diagnosis is the first step to possibly curing your depression.
if you're depressed a lot it probably means you have a depressive disorder, just like if your kidney hurts a lot it probably means you have pyelonephritis.
ty for using a perfect metaphor
if your kidney hurts a lot, it could be a number of things
you need a real doctor to diagnose it
just like if you're feeling depressed or unmotivated, it could actually be a number of different problems
and you need a real doctor to diagnose it!!
[editline]7th July 2012[/editline]
its weird to jump to the assumption that its pyelonephritis just like its weird to assume its depression
that's not weird; that's what i was told, if it's kidney pain test for pyelonephritis first using a urinalysis.
you're just being extremely pedantic anyway, either way you should be going to a doctor.
that's not weird; that's what i was told, if it's kidney pain test for pyelonephritis first using a urinalysis.
yes, maybe that's the most common cause so you should test first, but it's not the only thing that it could be. thats why you run the tests. its the exact same for depression
you're just being extremely pedantic anyway, either way you should be going to a doctor.
at first you were saying you don't need to see a doctor in order to get diagnosed:

I assume that was sarcasm, right?

no, depression is a symptom like kidney pain, that's why i was comparing them. you don't need a doctor to realize you are feeling kidney pain or depression.
depression itself isn't an illness.
I had this rash on my leg and I think it was depression
actually it is
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mental_disorders
there are a few types of depression, and they are all classified as mental disorders (or "illnesses")

no no depression is short-hand in diagnosis speak for major depressive disorder, in which one of the symptoms is depression.
ARE YOU GETTING THIS OR ARE YOU JUST BEING EXTREMELY PEDANTIC??
You guys are making this thread depressing
Guys what are you even arguing about? The guy feels depressed, and you both seem pretty even on that he should see a doctor and that depression isn't as easy to get rid of as to just man up.

i'm not being pedantic, I'm saying that you can't just self diagnose depression, which you said was perfectly fine
[editline]7th July 2012[/editline]
I feel like you calling my argument pedantic is just a way for you to dismiss what I'm saying
Great point all in all, if it is depression.
which is quite rude in a thread about advice and stuff. I don't think it's a good idea for someone to decide that they're depressed without a full diagnosis. it can really change the way you act
