BDA you're too nice and cheerful to be sad
BDA you could try to get a second job, take out some student loans, or get a better job with a better pay all together if its about trying to generate more money for school. ( I would imagine the hotel business doesn't pay so well).
If you want an adventure, but also need money and a job, get a job that is adventurous?
Firefighter? TV repair man? An Ivy League School janitor? Anything, but what you're currently doing now, because you've pretty much have stated your dislike of your current occupation.
I don't know if this is the right thread to post this, but I'm trying to fight off a video game addiction. I think that's what it is at least. Long story short my mom did not moderate my gaming at all = 16 hours of gaming each day for 3 years. It got better when I moved in with my dad and stepmom, we did all sorts of moderation and shit but I still play 8 hours a day because I barely have anything to do because my friendcount is 3, and I also forget to do homework and other important stuff. I really, really need your help FP.
I've got no beef with me job. It's better than any other job I've had, at any rate. I always get exactly 40 hours per week, you can space out during most of the work, and you get a lot of down time for doing homework or pissing about. Plus, you occasionally get to meet some pretty interesting people. My only complaint is that $8.50/hour is very difficult to sustain yourself with as a fully independent college student.
My problem is with monotony. I really dislike the day-to-day routine: wake up, go to school, go to work, come home, do homework, play video games for an hour, and go to bed. It's such a drag! I just need somebody to throw me a little bone, here. Something to grasp onto, to maintain my sanity for a bit. A road trip, going camping, something!\
What I'd really like to do is go see my uncle in Japan. I haven't seen him since he moved there, and that was about four years ago. He was my favorite family member, other than dad, and he was always throwing me into cool new stuff. Plus, he's in Japan. That's, like, the number one city for relieving boredness and monotony. It's just not possible, though. Even the plane tickets alone are so far out of my means, he might as well be on Mars, chilling with Curiosity.
i suppose you could check out craigslist and look up the odd temporary job or two in your area

i'm getting a little bit sick of this "i have a bad habit so i'm going to blame it on my parents" trend
set up a schedule for yourself. ie set aside a certain amount of time every day for games, then a few hours for important stuff. same time each day
take a hot air ballon ride with red dress lady
that'd be nifty as fuck
I don't have time, is the thing. I'm a full time college student and a full-time worker. Sunday's my only day off, and I spend it adjusting from working overnight to sleeping overnight. I woke up 24 hours ago, and I've got about eight more to go before I go sleep! I hate this marathon day; I have to do it every week, to be ready for class Monday morning.

how far are you into college? i don't know about your school, but at my community college we have the option to get an applied associate's degree, which is a version of an associate's degree that focuses more on career training. it generally makes you highly desirable to employers, but you can still continue a 4-year education with it.

I looked into hot air ballooning, actually! When I lost my medical certificate for my pilot's license, and was permanently grounded, I tried finding alternative options. Ultralight aircraft, gliders, even hot air balloons. Flying was my sailboat, and it kept me well satisfied. But access to these more specialized aircraft is a lot more limited around here, and very expensive. Back in high school, I could afford to dedicate $1000/month to my flying, because I didn't have any other responsibilities. Now I've got to be all grown up and whatnot!
I need to find something cheap and fun to sink myself into. Last summer I got into biking in a big way, but I just haven't been able to capture it again this summer.

I'm three semesters into my associate of engineering degree. I plan to study architectural engineering, and I might branch off and dabble in a bit of nautical engineering, too, because designing my own boat sounds like a very cool thing.
Of course, my CAD professor is a "sustainable design" engineer, which is something I can get very excited about. He was building an Earthship (an underground house, made mostly from recycled tires packed with dirt and sealed with plaster. Gives the home a very organic, hobbit-hole kind of feel) in Idaho, but his property got arsoned, because the good people of Bone, Idaho weren't very tolerant of outsiders bringing fancy new architecture.
Here was the render of his project:

I'd love to try and get involved with things like this, but I don't even know where to start.
ive just always wanted to ride a hot air ballon, it sounds super cool!
but wait, i thought you got your pilots license?

Really, that's your suggestion?
Really, that's your suggestion?
The dude probably hasnt had any life changing decisions to make yet.
Really, that's your suggestion?
Pretty much, what every other college student is doing.
Taking out loans for school, and getting a decent job to help get by.
8.50 is terrible to live off of for someone who has a craving to go out and travel/do other shit.
Working as a checker at the local grocery store pays almost 10 dollars an hour. Over night stocking pays almost 12 dollars an hour. Working as a DCS at the local mental hospital pays 13 dollars an hour (plus insane overtime, and 2 dollars more an hour for weekends) and requires little to no background and has a hiring age of 18. Working as a good waiter at a restaurant, bringing in a good amount in tips can make you more than 8.50 an hour.
My suggestion is he gets a job that pays better if he wants to go on trips.
Or push for a promotion.

My medical certificate was revoked in the army! I've got an unpleasant birth defect; it's a big hole in my chest. It wasn't an issue as a teenager, but as I grew into adulthood, it became more pronounced and started showing side effects. My heart is displaced and I have 60% of the lung-power of a normal dude. I'll never be allowed to fly again, not in any serious capacity :[
If I get rich and become a really ace engineer, I'll design my own ultralight and fly on a sport license.
ohhh that dent thing, ive got some friends who have that but i thought it didnt have any real effect on your body? guess i was wrong!
that blows though, sorry bda, you should take up acid so then you'll be mentally flying!
Are you a candidate for surgery for in the future? And if you had the corrective surgery, would you get your pilots license back?

Yeah, it's pretty rare for it to have any real effects. It's classified as an aesthetic defect, but every now and then a dude like me comes along and breaks all the rules. I'm pretty much okay with it, though!
Are you a candidate for surgery for in the future? And if you had the corrective surgery, would you get your pilots license back?
The army held me for two years, past the window to where a surgery might've restored lung function (can you even imagine? Waking up from surgery, and suddenly having almost a full extra lung! It would've been amazing, I bet), so I'm stuck with it now. Your body is only malleable for so long, and the procedure is most effective on younger patients, as far as restoring lost function goes.
I might at least be able to fix the aesthetic bit of it, though, which would do wonders for my self-image. Walking around with a giant bowl in your chest makes activities involving shirtlessness a bit unpleasant. All I need is an insurance company who'll cover the procedure, or about $70,000 in spare cash. Anybody lend me a fiver?
SO, I may never fly again, but as long as I've got sailing and stuff to look forward to, I'm hardly out of ideas!
welcome to modern western life
as sad as it is, a large proportion of people have their adventures when they are much much older. retired older. most people have to work at something they're not particularly interested in for the majority of their lives so that they'll have enough money to cram their adventures in at the last minute before they die
unless you're lucky enough to do something you love for your whole life which can be an adventure in itself, but only a few people in that position actually make money too
I'd say that's american western life or modern western life without welfare/the need to pay shitloads of cash to go to school.
Nice. Today I went to university to hear a preparatory speech for the beginning of university tomorrow.
Yes, on sunday. It wasn't obligatory but I decided to go since this semester they started all disorganized and there was a huge lack of information about how the semester will start and shit... that and the fact that we make our time tables online and there were lots of problems in the university's server..
Anyway. I sat next to this girl I knew from last year but never had the chance to talk to her. So basically since she was the only person I knew there and I was the only person she knew, we started to talk there.
So basically we started talking there paying zero attention and next thing I knew we were using our notebooks to make cartoons of the professors there. Things like drawing this bearded professor having tentacles as the beard, or drawing this other big eared professor flying up in the sky using huge ears as wings. Sounds stupid but we had a lot of fun.
Until one of the drawings made her giggle a bit too loud and one of the professors asked us to leave the auditory.
Kinda embarrassing but we laughed it off, headed of to the cafeteria and had some coffee.
Good thing is, I got her number and it seems we'll be having classes together.
Ok, ok I confess, I only went there because she told me she'd be there. But hey, what did I have to lose, right?
And there. I have a new friend.

You'll have more than a new friend if you play your cards right
BDA, I had that exact same disease too. It was only aesthetic, and I got it fixed, so reading that made me feel pretty bad.
I have to say though that if you do wanna get it fixed, be prepared for a year of pain. Worth it though because you can sound like a badass if you explain the scars on your sides. "Oh, those? That's from when I had a stainless steel rod jabbed into my chest."
Oh god this conversation made me just look up the american minimum wages...
The highest (not counting Santa Fe because it randomly has it's own minimum wage as a city), is 9.05 in Washington.
The lowest minimum wage in Canada is 9.50 in Saskatchewan, our highest is 11.00 in Nunavut.
Santa Fe has 10.29 by the way, and New Mexico's minimum is 7.50

$10.25 in Ontario where I am - I feel a bit lucky for it :v:
Asking a girl out who I really don't know too much.
How do I got about doing it?

be cool, be confident (or, appear to be), be blunt
well, be fairly blunt. the conversation would be better than just "hi, do you want to go out sometime?", but don't fanny around too much
