Graduating basic training is a major accomplishment that few can achieve. Them passing basic training is more than you've ever done, even me.
Which just reinforces my point. They're happy about it because they consider it a major accomplishment, so obviously they're going to make a thread about it. And frankly, I don't think they give a damn whether people care or not. They're just happy about it and want to tell as many people as possible. Basically OP, "I'm joining the Army" != "I'm a badass"

You can't even be criticizing them, chances are you've done nothing with your life. It is a major accomplishment.

I'm not saying they come out "Oh god I'm such a badass" I'm saying they probably go in thinking they're a badass and come out a completely different person. How are you missing this I've been agreeing with you the past three posts.

I was talking to the OP in that post. He said "It's not a major accomplishment" and I said "most people consider it one" because, even though it is a major accomplishment, some people will say it isn't. e.g. the OP. below post, prime example of what I am talking about. I'm not going to say everyone views it as a great accomplishment because not everybody does.
Then why don't you go into the armed forces, see if you don't feel like telling people that you're doing something great.
That's your opinion, many of us don't share it. I see it as another regular job, only with more sweat.

Ok, stop the fighting. We don't want to see pages of fighting.
If you get high rank in army such as general and still hang out in FP, then post a thread. Become FP hero.
Wow, how hypocritical. You say you respect the armed forces, yet you tell any individual who's joining them that you don't care. Would you say that to every individual that asked you? Suppose you get drafted into a supposed "future war", knowing full well that after completing training camp you'll be immediately shipped to a hot combat zone with a high mortality rate. Would you want people to look at you and say they don't care? They're signing up for a job that constantly puts their lives at risk. Saying you don't care about the heaviness of the situation they're in is an absolute insult.
This thread is too angry.
This reminds me of the satire video review of the "most realistic war FPS simulator ever" HAUL AROUND EQUIPMENT. SIT AROUND WAITING FOR ORDERS. HAUL SOME MORE EQUIPMENT. SIT AROUND SOME MORE WAITING FOR ORDERS. GET LOST FROM YOUR SQUAD IN THE DESERT AND GET SHOT IN THE BACK.
This is what you are talking about and it is funny. Watch this and stop being angry and start being happy.
I hate that they brag about it like it's the best thing in the world. I know that it's a pretty big thing, going to defend and fight for your country and all, but if you really want something to be proud about, then join the Marines.
What the Hell are you talking about? I'm sorry but... wow. This is the most inconsiderate, despicable post I've ever seen. They're not bragging about it, and not everything is a competition, though you clearly think it is. You're jealous. [editline]02:18PM[/editline] For my opinion on the topic: There's not a lot of good threads in GD anyway.
This place is a General Discussion forum. If someone wants to post about how they joined the military, then by all means they are allowed to. Just because it pisses you off doesn't mean that they should stop.
100 useless fucking inane threads are made in GD every day. What bothers you such much about a guy letting everyone know he joined the Military and is going to bootcamp etc? I fail to see how it is any worse than the multitudes of shit threads like "my girlfriend broke up with me", "I got a boner in school today", "some guy tried to fight me", "my xbox is broken :<" etc. We may as well close the GD by your standards. Someone pull me up if I'm wrong, but I was under the assumption that General Discussion means general discussion
Lol I made a thread about joining the Navy, and it's like the best example of what the op is talking about.
im leaving for fort benning this coming monday 14 weeks of osut + 11 weeks of other stuff
Like I said I, along with every other American, respects the U.S military services
I don't.
are air force recruit threads kosher

Saying you don't care about the heaviness of the situation they're in is an absolute insult.
Actually I've been told (by my ex-Army teacher, years ago), that about 10% of the Army is actual combat. You can be a mechanic, a doctor, um, and lot's of other stuff and probably not see combat.
There are much worse threads worth complaining about, for example the "I did this at school today". I'd much rather read (or just avoid) threads about someone proud of defending their country than a 12 year old who lost their virginity behind the lunch hall or a celebrity cutting their hair off.
Actually I've been told (by my ex-Army teacher, years ago), that about 10% of the Army is actual combat. Just in general, you know, a war were fighting actually occurs.
Nope, being in the army pretty much means you weren't qualified enough for the real jobs, so it's hardly an accomplishment.
hahahahahahahaha i guess that's why i know people with doctors degrees in medicine joining the army and army reserves. i guess that's why i know people who have held a good job for their entire lives becoming a soldier in the army. if you really believe that sentiment, perhaps you should leave your basement and actually go meet some of the people who join the military and serve to protect your interests at home. that was a huge generalisation and really a pathetic one.
You can't justify supporting the troops then hating on those who don't go into the armed forces. The army is there (supposedly) to help sustain the values that their countrymen get to benefit from. In disrespecting the people whom the military defends, you too are trivialising their job. the army is there to support your fundamental rights as citizens of American democracy, one of which is free speech. edit: post seems kind of contradictory now - shit.
that whole post was the largest joke i've ever read. seriously, wow. you read way too much into what people were saying. good job to you.
I hate that they brag about it like it's the best thing in the world. Do you want us all to live out a shallow existence of self pity knowing that we made the worst career move of our lives? And why is it you think only the Marines show the only pride of all the Armed Forces? Their must be something, or someone you take great pride in.
OH BAWW SOMEONE HAS A HIGHER E-WORTH THAN ME I MUST MAKE A BAWw THREAD ABOUT IT
Every post you make is a gold mine.
It seems there is at least one or two threads on the GD front page everyday about some guy going to training. Ok yeah we get it, you are serving our country. That's great, and we all respect the army, but we could care less about you going individually. You aren't some Chuck Norris baddass now, you are probably just going to sit around waiting to get deployed. Like I said I, along with every other American, respects the U.S military services, but I am not going to think, "Oh man that 1337noobraper dude is so brave and he is going to save the whole country all by himself!" It just irritates me how so many people think they will garner a lot of reputation as a badass here on an internet forum. Like it is a huge accomplishment.
Get over it, some people are proud that they made it though boot camp and their alternative/advance training. They did something they would never normally do and made it though. Let them have their short period of fame, they did something awesome for themselves are just want to share it. Nothing wrong with that. You seem arrogant and full of yourself tbh. Its easy for you to sit there and say that because you sit behind a computer and do jack shit all day and get everything handed too you. What makes your statement even more funny for me is that if the armed forces are so insignificant why is it when something happens and gets fucked up by someone in the armed forces there is a huge outrage? Oh that is right because they're held to a higher standard, they're held too that standard for a reason. I don't believe every military member should have a parade and everyone be super patriotic. But your statement is just plain retarded.
You end up being a small addition to the thousands already in it. No one will remember you unless you get killed anyways.
How do you know? You might not notice the results individually, but their efforts in their command and squad might make a huge difference. Anyway this thread is just as ridiculous as the threads about making it though or joining bootcamp. They get off topic so quick it isn't even funny, it ends up turning in to "lol X country is evil, fighting for freedom! WHAT A LIE, they're just there to kill children and rape women and steal oil!!!!"
I don't know why people are so happy about being cannon fodder anyway. Hooray, I get to take giant risks in the hope of shooting a couple of people to SAAAAVE AMERRRRICAAAAAA AND FREEEEDOOOMMMMMM. Maybe they have no other means of getting a job?
I don't know why people are so happy about being cannon fodder anyway.
What? Not all people who join the military are front line soldiers, and the front line soldiers are not treated like cannon fodder.
Hooray, I get to take giant risks in the hope of shooting a couple of people
Lol, perhaps you're playing too many video games... not everyone is like that.
to SAAAAVE AMERRRRICAAAAAA AND FREEEEDOOOMMMMMM.
If it weren't for the American Army, people would be imprisoned and your freedoms severly limited. I guess we should only have an army for the bad times! [/derp]
Maybe they have no other means of getting a job?
Some... maybe, most no. Most have had other jobs / education.
I don't know why people are so happy about being cannon fodder anyway. Hooray, I get to take giant risks in the hope of shooting a couple of people to SAAAAVE AMERRRRICAAAAAA AND FREEEEDOOOMMMMMM. You do realize majority of motivated people who choose to join a combat role like Infantry do it because they want an adventure right?
I don't know why people are so happy about being cannon fodder anyway. Therefore I must go in as a pilot. :downs: The branches of the military cover vast fields, not all are limited to combat roles. And some people who join the military get jobs later in their life.
