I've been reading about Che Guevara after wondering what all the rage was with these hipsters and their fascination for wearing him on their T-Shirts and after reading the wikipedia page about him I think that I that he had good intentions and I respect him for fighting for what he believed in. However, I think he could have done a better job with controlling the situation, especially since there were so many executions. What does FP think about Che Guevara?
he was part of a military junta, that's reason enough to dislike him
[editline]16th June 2012[/editline]
although his book was a good read
He was a doctor before he was a revolutionary, so he can't have been awfully bad. And travelling through South America treating the poor, witnessing poverty in so many of the areas he visited is what spawned his anti-capitalistic views. Personally, i think he was a good man, and i think he did what he believed and what i also believe was right. He couldn't have achieved anything without military action, it simply wasn't possible.
simply calling Che "good" or "bad" isn't something you can do but fuck all the white college kids wearing those stupid urban outfitters t-shirts
I don't know, but next time I see a hipster wearing a Che Guevara shirt, I'm gonna rip it off and yell: "This shirt is a result of pigdog capitalism!"
It depends, do you consider the killing of people which isn't in self-defense to be bad?
He was a psychopathic dictator, who brutally suppressed everyone who opposed him.
Obviously a good guy
I think it's funny, Che, a staunch communist, is now sold as a shirt in capitalist countries
Slightly off topic, but I find it funny that most of the people who wear his face on their t-shirts don't even know who he is.
He's just the t-shirt man.

With a sexy face. It's one thing to do something world changing but also to be one devil of a pants changer.

I agree with the first part of your statement and I find the second part insulting and racist.

He's kind of just insulting all of the uninformed youth out there who wear shirts with his likeness and have not one clue as to who he is.
I agree with the first part of your statement and I find the second part insulting and racist.
...how on earth is the second part racist? if anything, Urban Outfitters is probably the king of appropriating, racist bullshit.

Who helped the people massively. Go watch the Che movies maybe you'll learn something.

go say that to the descendants of cuban refugees in florida
It's a bit difficult to say one way or the other and really depends on how you look at it. On the one hand you have the fact that he helped instigate a war in Cuba that got a lot of people killed and allowed Castro, who while not being the worst leader in the world, certainly has his fair share of human rights abuses.
On the other hand however one could kind of understand why he did what he did. He wanted to bring about the communist revolution after seeing so many people living in poverty and felt that everyone deserved the basic things in life, which he felt would be achieved via communism and one could argue that if killing a few people along the road will bring about a better world, then it is to some degree justified.

Well, Hitler helped his chosen people, too.
People who disagreed with him? Not so much
Same here

Not quite the same as Che, Che went across south America trying to help people in those countries and never really desired power himself. Hitler on the other hand was more interested in making Germany itself great with little regard for those outside Germany and was more interested in gaining power.
I wish people would stop judging historical figures only based on polar concepts like 'good' or 'bad'.
Even Stalin and Hitler, two of the most terrifying dictators have done good deeds. It is absolutely never as black and white as some people put it.
And to promote a notion of political polarity is to promote ignorance.
This is a very wise post - heed it.
Che Guevara was a very complex character. It's hard to say whether he was good or bad... I mean, on the one hand he was in a military junta but on the other it seems like he genuinely thought he was attempting to better the world.
Put it this way, he said this:
“To send men to the firing squad, judicial proof is unnecessary … These procedures are an archaic bourgeois detail. This is a revolution!”
That doesn't sound like a good person, does it? But he was trying to lead a revolution. There's no such thing as a bloodless revolution - if you want to overturn a political system lots of bad things are going to happen.
Thanks in part to Che Guevara, Fidel Castro managed to do amazing things for Cuba. The Cuban Literacy Campaign took literacy from roughly 60% to around 96% in a few years. Today the Cuban literacy rate is 99.9%, compared to the UK and America's 99.0% and Portugal's 94.9%.
By the same token, lots of gay people ended up getting imprisoned in Cuba as a result of the communist ascent.
Nothing's 100% good or 100% bad. Our current political system certainly has a lot of bad. Similarly, anyone seeking to enact change is probably going to have to do some bad things because people will try and do bad things to them.
Either way, I'm confused by references to Che Guevara t-shirts being worn by hipsters or sold in Urban Outfitters. Those t-shirts haven't been fashionable for over 10 years; I doubt you're likely to find any hipsters wearing them.
go say that to the descendants of cuban refugees in florida
They opposed Cuba making sure everybody could read and write, that everybody could go to a qualified doctor, that everybody had food. Fuck the refugees.
depends on perspective
on one hand he started a war killing hundreds of people and participated in creating a military junta
but on the other hand that same regime still undeniably made the country miles better than it was under Batista
...how on earth is the second part racist? if anything, Urban Outfitters is probably the king of appropriating, racist bullshit.
Because you specified white people as the only ones who would wear that shirt in such a manner. From my experiences, hispanics wear the shirt much more often than white people.

poor white people getting called out :(

Are you serious? Do you not see the racism in your posts right now? Or are you trying to make a sarcastic point? I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to say here.
You are continuing to assert that white people (you imply as a whole at this point) ignorantly wear Che t-shirts. I don't believe this is true. Show some evidence please.
you didn't understand his post at all. he said "fuck all the white college kids wearing those stupid urban outfitters t-shirts", not "all white college kids wear stupid urban outfitters t-shirts".

So it's all cool to wear Che shirts if you are hispanic then? OK.
at least a latino wearing a che shirt makes sense.
at least a latino wearing a che shirt makes sense.
So only latino people can follow his beliefs then?
I'm astounded by the racism of both of your posts.
