You need to work on your horizon. There isn't really a focus to either of the pictures. Shooting through the window of the building is a distraction. Keep trying though! There seems to be some pretty interesting locations to shoot from where you are.

Quick question to anyone with an answer. I hardly ever use a flash, and I rarely do pictures of people, but I want to know how to do a long exposure shot and then use a flash to capture people at the end. Resulting with a beautiful, long exposure background and a crisp image of the subject.
I'm sure it's possible, and I'm pretty sure it's called rear-curtain flash. I just don't know how to use it yet. Also, since I'll be shooting manually, how should I adjust the exposure?
Thanks to anyone who answers in advance.

I want to eventually get these all printed as I'm doing a 366 day challenge. Looking through the Exif info for about 366 prints to find out the order would be a bit hellish..
I know it looks silly but its for practicality later on..
Something like this:

Do you have a separate flash unit?

I see now, I just thought you left it on your camera or something haha. My apologies.

Man that picture is so technical. Cool, but a little overdone IMO.

Yes, I have two off camera flashes (SB-600 and SB-900 I think?). They're both my dad's so I don't really recall. I also have a remote for using them off camera and mounted to a stand / on the ground. I have never played with it before, but I think what I was talking about was the correct method.

Sorry, I just go to my "read" threads and go from there. I haven't explored the Photo forum too much.
My D5100 arrived today, had a blast trying everything out on it. Of all the photos I got these two were the only Okay ones.
First ever time attempting good photography.

Why do the links keep breaking? argh.[/QUOTE]
If you're going to post from flickr, just go to the image you want to share with us, and click the share button near the top left of the page and get the BB Code in the box. It will be a few lines long. Then copy and paste it and you should be good to go. It even links us to the image at full res and your flickr account.

Well I have 2 suggestions, not tried it out myself but I would imagine you would do the long exposure, then on the last few seconds of it, get into position, with flashes on stands pointing at you, then flash them.
If that doesn't work then It'l have to be photoshop. Unless anyone has any other ideas?
Also: [url]http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1153341[/url]
Oh ok thanks, I was grabbing the regular link.
use the on board flash so it goes off when the exposure begins and flash the subject in sooner rather than later?
[QUOTE=Him1411;34167463]use the on board flash so it goes off when the exposure begins and flash the subject in sooner rather than later?[/QUOTE]
I was thinking that too, but I'm afraid that the rest of the exposure will start to fade the subject. It's confusing to think about in my head and make any sense of it. Guess I'll just have to go out this evening and take a swing at it til I (hopefully) get it right. I'll post results later if there are any to be yielded.
He would appear like a ghost because all the light behind Wouk overwrite the data captured when the flash fired

Good luck!
I tried to do it here once before:

However, you can see that the long exposure faded my right shoulder and my hair / face are ghosting. Don't remember the settings, but I wanna say it was like 16" with a flash at the end. However, I was very pleased with the background!
That's nearly spot on! I wouldn't of really noticed the flaws if you hadn't of said, I'm sure you'll get the shot our wanting.
Also, I'm sure I've seen that pic somewhere before..

I don't think it really matters.
It's a very boring subject, without much thought put into composition (especially in the second) or scene (boring bokeh).
Try going closer, if anything, so the leaves fill the frame more.

Thanks, I don't really like either of them. The photo just happened to the best that I got today which is disappointing, but I did get out late to take photos today so I basically ran out of light. It was really a test of Lightroom 4 and editing a .raw photo file, they're the same photo just edited. I might try to take the photo again tomorrow but with a different lens. I only like to take my camera plus a lens attached when I go out walking, especially if I'm on a time crunch. Thank you for the C&C Roll_Program, I can always use it.

Hahah, I've gotten so many things. Ben Affleck, Captain Awesome (from Chuck), Elvis, Superman, Ryan Reynolds, and now Andrew Kramer. However, I think I look like none of these people.

Messing around with more editing.
The picture isn't that great, from a technical standpoint, it had some slight motion blur and was taken handheld in low light, from a moving vehicle, but I like what I've done to it.
I tried getting rid of this lighter band around the middle, caused by some low lying fog, but couldn't manage it without it looking more noticeable.
I really like whatever you're doing to edit that. I feel like it's almost film quality, but nicer. You and bopie tend to have similar editing styles. I really appreciate how crisp it is, yet how small everything looks in perspective to the mountains. Also, I like the desaturated look.
