developed my first roll successfully, didn't go for any fancy subjects because I didn't want to be picky given the chance that I could screw up the process

Love the one on the right.
Went out today and shot a lot only to find that my camera had switched to S3 instead of L+ RAW, I was not pleased with that but I decided to try and make the best out of them.

I went to The Deep, and this is the only picture I can be bothered to upload at 05:40.

Attempt at starlight photos, 2nd day. CC appreciated. :) Probably should have gotten that umbrella out of the way. And a much longer exposure.

I think you're focusing too much on macro; step back and take in an entire scene rather than just one feature.
Attempt at starlight photos, 2nd day. CC appreciated. :) Probably should have gotten that umbrella out of the way. And a much longer exposure.
Not sure if you're going for stars or for startrails, probably startrails. For startrails, the trick is to take many exposure of probably around 30 secs then stack them all together in post-production. This is an example of 80 shots of 30 secs each. Not my photo, but is from p.folk on Flickr.

If you were going for stars, you would need to have a dark location, like the countryside. Since having a longer exposure would mean trails, you would need to make the exposure much shorter, done by using a faster lens and higher iso. This is an example from Thunderbolt_TW on Flickr.

I like the shape of the light, but the blown highlights aren't really working for this.
I actually like what's going on with the side of his face, but the grass just doesn't look good to me. If you had been standing say 45 degrees to the left of him from the current view point, I think you could have got something nice without that intensely direct light.

Thanks. I can see what you're talking about with the highlights and all, I was attempting to emulate those sort of glowy highlights you get on cheap film. Sort of like what's going on on the table below.

maybe... when I'm in abandoned buildings I'm more concerned about some meth head hiding around the corner than taking artistic photos. I just try to document what I see. Also where possible avoiding urbex'ing solo is a good idea (I was solo for most of melbourne).

Reminds me of when for thrills my friends and I would walk through this abandonded mental facility turned crackhouse named Julia Far. Best/Worst things seen was a dude standing on his tippy toes in the corner whispering at the wall and doing the exact same thing on our way out, and a guy running around the second floor slapping the walls with a 2m chain - don't think I've run that fast since.

It's always a 5D Mark II.
Thanks though!
But how does he take a 32 second picture, without getting long startrails?
I think I'm going to start a 52 week project, so I better take a good photo this week.

I wanna do this too.
It's gonna be a busy spring though, so I'm not sure I'll be able to make it.
It's always a 5D Mark II.

It depends on the focal length, star declination and exposure time.
Basically, small focal lengths like 18mm, coupled with stars nearer the poles, and exposures between 30-60s can still give pretty sharp results.
The more you zoom in, and the more you're pointing at equatorial stars... the more they will trail. If you saw that pic at 100% crop there's probably a bit of movement.
and thus begins a 52 project.

I'm really digging portrait photography. I'll be taking some more shots of this girl. The last pic is just a re-edit from an old shoot. The first two is from a little mini shoot we did at my place, I was actually just playing around, going for the rough look. The grain in the second picture was supposed to make it look more gritty.

Got soaking wet trundling to this spot, horrible weather all day - and the pictures came out miserable. Went to a lovely locale in Bristol (When it's dry!) and only got a handful of snaps. Thankfully Lightroom saved the day here.
