Plushies are relatively easy to make. Comparing a knitted ball of cotton comprised of 3 colors that probably took less than 2 hours to make to Leonardo DaVinci's greatest work isn't really fair.
you're still demeaning the value of art. the artist who made that spent probably hundreds of hours learning how to stitch and knit and create in order to make something like that.i don't like pony stuff, but that doesn't mean i can't recognize the effort and care that went into that plushie (that people decided to dish out 1.3k on for some reason).
if plushies were relatively easy to make, i'd be able to pick up high quality bullshit everywhere for pennies. that's why art costs money, you're paying somebody with a skill YOU DO NOT HAVE to make something YOU CANNOT MAKE that YOU WANT
I'm sure it isn't uncommon for a furry artist to charge 200$ a pop.
I mean, if I knew somebody was going to buy it, why not jack up the price?
I'm actually really aware of how undersold some artists are. It's a really skewed culuture but you have to admit there are a good deal of artists who really abuse their fans and charge rather high amounts.
good thing those artists are really stupid and we have artists-beware.
most of the artists who overcharge for retarded stuff aren't even worth considering at all. for example, an artist my friend planned on commissioning said it would cost 20 dollars extra to get a PENCIL as a prop in his piece because of his dumb concrete commission prices.

because most of the people who buy art are like me. i don't make much money, but i like getting my character did, so i'm going to look for artists who charge less than, say, 50 dollars to draw something. would you rather have 10 people buy 10 dollar sketches from you every month, or one person buying a 100 dollar finished piece every month? which sounds safer?
artists like tsampikos, strype, meesh, blotch, etc, can get away with charging 200 dollars for a piece because that's what their art is worth to people. an entry-level artist with 30 watchers won't get any business if they charge up the ass.

Eh i see artists sell solo commissions with color for like $70 with backgrounds costing extra and people buy loads.
yeah basically
if you got somebody without a huge hobby to look at a gaming enthusiast, car enthusiast, anime enthusiast, airsoft enthusiast, or furry enthusiast, he'd probably think they're all a bunch of idiots who are wasting their money. they're all equally useless and fantastic, if that makes sense.
Before I was in cars, I was in airsoft, still have the 3000$ of shit I bought over the years (And a lot of them were at COST price, import stuff from russia, and it was back before airsoft in Canada was still in a grey area and where a metal receiver was worth 200-300$ and plastic craps like 3-400$.) All that money is down the drain now as I don't play anymore, haven't played since like 2-3 years either.
Now I'm into car and most of my money go in go fast parts. But hey, I like that and it's fun.
Then on side hobbies I have target shooting/skid shooting, probably spend a few hundreds in bullets and targets a year, then there's computer/gaming, a new computer there and there, games there and there.
But money's made to be spent in the long run and life's made to be lived! So yeah.
And i'm talking like basic solo comissions.

its really hilarious how people hate how strangers spend their money.
everybody can be considered an idiot if you think that way.

Depends on how you look at it. Some MLP plushie makers arent even bronies, they're just capitalizing on an internet community that has too much disposable cash.
If you look at the images in that ebay link, it's not really the best looking plushie in the world. It looks like any other run-of-the-mill stuffed animal bought at Walmart. If some dude in asia can make an MLP plushie in 10 minutes for 10 cents a day, then I don't see why somebody else here in the US can't do the same, slap a fleshlight in it, and make the price $1000. It would definitely sell as long as the community exists.
The same applies to furries as well. Just look at how well BD is doing.
My main hobby is pimping out my computer.
[editline]20th January 2014[/editline]
Stupid touch phone almost made me post a partial sentence.
also i never really experience that artists overcharging stuff because i mostly just commission my friends.
i got some cute cartoony thing at FC though, but only because i sorta knew the artist and it was only 20 dollars.

Yeah, well in the long run you can say "My money, my decisions."
Either ways, myself, at the end of the month, even if I put money in my hobbies, rent, loans, I still eat well, all my meals, still able to afford everything I need, while still being able to save some of it.
I'd say despite my expensive hobbies, I'm pretty good at managing my budget. IE, won't buy too expensive parts without having the money for it first. Rent and car payment goes before leisure.
Since i seldom/never get them if i'm going to get a commission i don't mind spending a pretty penny, but i cap that at like 60 bucks. The max i think i'd ever pay (and it'd have to be something special to get this exception) would be $100.

I know probably like 4 furries who spend their social security income checks on furry commissions, video games, and entire pizzas every day. I understand that it's their money, but it's sometimes scary just how bad some people are at prioritizing their income.

Any hobby has freaks and idiots like that.
If they want to live a shitty life, that's their own problem.

just in certain hobbies, those are the ones that are exemplified.

Not really just a few, any hobby can become an addiction. It just looks different than other addictions.
I known people who spent every dime on cars and lived in it. No home, just lived in their fancy car.
I went over my calorie limit for today and my mom is making me more food.

people like that exist everywhere for every type of hobby. the reason you hear it so much about furries and bronies and weebs is because people who don't like them love digging up that kind of shit.

I've never had an actual hobby before because I have no one to do said hobbies with (wanted to do airsoft in particular. I have enough money to get some basic shit but what's the point if I don't have anyone to airsoft with?)

if you really want to get into a hobby, building models is a good place to start. especially gundam models.
you can get yourself everything you need including a model kit for like, 30 dollars.
I would love to do airsoft, I've done it overseas but since it's banned in Australia, I can't do it.
Most of my hobbies are really expensive, cars, photography (more of a one off payment), furry stuff, gaming and waterskiing. I can't really afford stuff for it, other than the basics anyway which sucks.
How difficult is water-skiing? I wanted to try it once but my balance is pretty dreadful.
Speaking of hobbies.
Say hello to ant queen butt and her 3 workers. Under the queen is a pile of about 15 eggs, but you can't really see them.
It's sort of neat having and watching a little animal breed and start its own little home and family in captivity.

I was +Watched by one of the most popular artists within a certain fetish ring on FA for my crappy smut writing.
I don't know how I feel about that.
Its fun to think that people who just spend a lot of money towards their interest are just stupid horrible with money and blow 80% of their income on it due to being obsessed, when the reality is that they are probably just loaded
I know
1. A hospital manager
2. Literally a film producer/director who mostly works on commercials and music videos
3. A rocket scientist
4. Stock broker
AKA if I was successful in either of those I'd probably have more money than I knew what to do with. It explains the amount of con going/art buying/etc they do at the very least.
And because they are all gay as well, some of them in relationships, their cost of living is much lower than your average american family (sans tax breaks that married couples get... because you know) due to no kids and both people working full time. So they just have assloads of cash that gets spent towards interests and hobbies, even considering car payments, mortgage, savings, retirement, etc.
One thing I'm glad to be gay about is not having to worry about the cost of having kids or a family. And if I ever do decide to do that, I know I'll need enough money to be able to afford adoption alone, which means being at that point means money probably wouldn't be an issue anyways.

To be fair, I've never heard of someone who spends their social security checks building FPV drones or milling engines out of stock (aside from retired people)
I've seen people barely making ends meet because they wanted those 2000$ wheels so bad.
