Milk is sometimes necessary in some coffee. however, if the blend is shit, then you will taste it in black coffee, as opposed to coffee with milk which masks some of the flavour.

Milk in coffee ruins it in my opinion. Milk is too thin and watery and messes with the coffee in my opinion and is too weak in flavor to add anything and just detracts from it. That's just my take though.

It's hard because I grind my own beans but don't have a burr grinder which is really the only way you can get proper even coarse grounds (what you need to use for french press, really hard to get a coarse enough grind with just blades and not have whole beans hiding in there). One of these days once I get a place with actual counterspace I need to just get a burr grinder. I usually prefer medium/dark and usually put just a little bit of cream and sugar in there (occasionally stuff like cinnamon/nutmeg too if I'm feeling particularly festivus-y). I can drink coffee black but I just prefer it with some cream and sugar. I don't really know the differences between regional blends of coffee too well, mostly because I tend to buy whatever happens to be on sale that is whole bean/arabican/medium-and/or-dark. When it comes to "real" lattes I can get at a downtown coffee bar I almost always have them straight. They just taste so good and creamy that I think adding sugar, even a little, wouldn't really improve it at all for me. That said I like to order stuff like mochas and such too :v: but mostly I just get lattes. They are cheaper, still good, and I enjoy having something really nice quality that isn't sweetened like that every now and then.
