I didn't have the textbook, because textbooks are stupid and I never used the textbook for anything else in that class. I just looked up some amazon.com reviews and read what they had to say about the book to get an idea of how it compares. Hate shit like that because textbooks are pointless for the majority of my classes so I never waste money buying them. Guess what? Did perfectly fine on the "actual" questions of the exam that was actually about the subject. Paying attention in class >>>>> reading from a textbook to learn. I wish all my teachers were like my old history teacher I had a year or two ago. He said first day of class (paraphrase): "This is the textbook but I'm only required to tell you about it from the department. Textbooks are bullshit, only existing to feed an industry and you'll learn everything you need right here in class or from resources I put online." The only time I've ever needed a textbook is A. When teachers pull bullshit questions like "WHAT DID X SAY IN THE TEXTBOOK" or B. When they include software that you HAVE to use for the class. Paying attention in class and doing a good job on assignments has always otherwise been fine at learning the material. Seeing as textbooks are worthless in research since you want to be looking at primary sources anyways, no point in using them for that either. The only time a textbook isn't a total scam and waste of money is if its a really important/good read for the class that isn't a textbook anyways. I.E. for my sculpture class the book we were suggested to get was a book on specific artists and why they do what they do and various aspects that keeps them engaged in their work. Its not a textbook made to siphon money, its an actual book. Thus it wasn't too expensive and actually ends up being pretty insightful as a supplemental reading material to the stuff I do in class.
