The game isn't even out yet and Vaas seems like game villain of the year.
I hope Vaas is in it for most of the game as the main bad guy, I hated how the suave Belgian villain with the red scarf in Saint's Row 3 was killed off so early in the game, he was a fantastic bad guy! And all the promotional stuff and trailers made him look like the main villain. I liked the direction of the game after that point, but I've got to admit I was a little disappointed.
The game isn't even out yet and Vaas seems like game villain of the year.
Nothing can beat Handsome Jack.
Wow, I just watched it, that was intense! It was just so cinematic, but it also felt like a game, something that not many games get right these days. My only problem is that developers go way to crazy with the SSAO.
Ahhh, just enough gameplay footage to surely convince me NOT to buy this game. It's as generic and scripted as any other piece of shit out there. Sorry but that's just how I see it.

No shit open world games usually start from somewhere, you don't magically pop up in the middle of everything, there's a plot to introduce.

And almost all games I have played with free roam have had the very first gameplay be pretty restricted. And 13 minutes of opening mission should NOT turn you off to a game where it is confirmed to have a pretty big open world with open world missions. Seems kinda silly to me.
There has been plenty of short gameplay footage from elsewhere of the game, not just the opening/beginning. And the whole "Player is so scared and inexperienced in warfare" will fall flat on its face when the player gets an AK47 by 5 minutes into the game and kills everything. But alright alright, we'll see.

The character could have the potential to have a "Turning point" where he is changed forever and goes from a gigantic pussy to a murderer. I feel like they will be able to turn it off. I mean, shit, so many characters are ex-mil you could simply explain a characters extreme efficiency with a gun as "he was a sports shooter", and his medical knowledge as "His father was a doctor and trained him". If I made a story for a character I would have good focus on those details, an old man in a post apoc world with a sniper rifle, who has virtually perfect accuracy and timing. He's a sport shooter. Bam, you just created a fairly average and generic, and yet very unique explanation for a character. Just like Dr. Freeman's vent skills are explained as Kliener locking himself out, instead of "HEY HE WAS EX MILITARY!!!!!" there are ways to have a good ex military character, however. It isn't automatically a flawed character because many people are in the military, it just is somewhat overdone.
This looks absolutely fucking phenomenal.
To anyone doubting the game and expects a very linear and scripted experience, RockPaperShotgun already covered the game with a review and it's definitely a whole big open sandbox game with tons of exploration, with every single area having something interesting to offer, and that you're rewarded with your exploration. The whole world also doesn't center around you and there's always plenty of stuff happening independent of what you're doing. It's everything good that was on Far Cry 1 & 2 without the boring negatives like malaria, empty world and tedious backtracking.
You see, Far Cry 3 allows you to carry up to four weapons, and your machete. But when the game starts you only have a single holster. Want another one? Make it. Make it out of a dead goat. That’s where this game’s mind is. Guns are basically free, with a bit of exploring, but the capacity to carry them, well, you have to gut that goat. Initially I couldn’t believe it – this is a first-person shooter, not an MMO – but then after a while I realised that Ubisoft Montreal have basically followed my own advice about how to approach open worlds. Rather than take Far Cry 2′s “it’s all about the shooting” approach to the game, they’ve made it more of a place, more of a world. And despite a few stumbles along the path, it’s dragged me in. Sure, you still drive about an island, getting into gunfights. There are still baddies patrolling constantly in jeeps, and there are bases and checkpoints full of hostiles all over the island, but there’s so much else going on, too. There are friendly NPCs, there are neutral NPCs. There are villages with people chatting and playing cards. There are pirates looting bodies on beaches. There are leopards hunting deer in the forest. There are bandits and boat patrols, there are hang-gliders and a magic mushroom merchant on the hill. This is a game which absolutely rewards exploration, which makes the most of its open world, and which populates it in a way which is absolutely ludicrous and unrealistic, and which makes it absurdly entertaining. It’s huge, it’s silly, it’s beautiful, and it’s fiery.

And let’s make a note of something about this third game as I close: It’s better than Far Cry 2. Whether or not you liked that game is, I think, irrelevant. Because it has kept what was good – the mad rallying of the driving, the fire propagation, the needlessly horrifying first-aid – and builds on everything else. For some people, I am sure, this will be game of the year. It’s certainly the game I hoped Far Cry 2 would be back in 2008. This new game doesn’t quite manage to clinch 2012 for me, but I have awkward tastes. For most people, I suspect, this will be cocktails and barbecues on the beach. Right as the year closes, we have another reason to be cheerful.
Interesting how the protagonist is just an average guy, I figured he would be with the CIA or some shit like Jack Carver from the first game. That's how the entire plot of the first one started, isn't it? CIA dude is on vacation and dropping off some girl and his ship gets blown up.

It looks pretty great, but damn son I don't need a fucking powerpoint and bullet points to explain the game mechanics to me. Nor do I need a marker to tell me where the guy I'm supposed to be following is. The level design and lighting, colour, etc, should do those things. I'm also not sure how I feel about hearing some guy's voice come from my face while I'm playing. I'd like to play as ME, not as some honkey ass white boy. It's a pretty bad decision both in terms of narrative and gameplay; it's not going to feel as immersive because it's trying to tell you what your character is feeling; whereas in silent-protagonist games like Skyrim, HL2 and Dishonoured you tell yourself what your feeling. And nobody talks to themselves as much as this guy does; 'oh I need to go and find my friends and then do this'. Find a better way to set up missions and objectives And what's with this nasty looking attempt at ambient occlusion, with big black smeary outlines around the characters [editline]23rd November 2012[/editline] don't get me wrong, the non-linear sandboxey bits look amazing, but this demo isn't looking too promising

Yeah for Half-Life it was a breath of fresh air, but now it's just over-done. That trailer actually left me engrossed and wanting more, if there was no dialogue from the protagonist I would have just been bored. Plus you just said you don't need bullet points to tell you what to do, yet you complain when the character tells himself what to do, which is a completely organic and immersive way of telling the player of where to go and what to do. I think everything shown thus far is quite great. After all we don't know how much or little he talks to himself later on, or if there's higher difficulties where you don't get markers or other hints.
I like how the protagonist talks

I think Dishonored would have been more fun for me if Corvo had a voice, and his dialogue would be dependent on my choices in game. I can understand Skyrim, because your character essentially starts from scratch and you fill in the blanks through what sort of skills you learn and what groups you join with.
I remember one YT video in which the voice act (Michael Mando) dressed up as Vaas, he was exactly like him.
I think the production values of the game are good, and it looks like a fun, but it pains me to see linear sequences in games with open world technology. The opening and that stealth bit in Skyrim, all of Crysis, and one or two others just annoy me so much I think there is still innovation to be had with the FPS platform. Minecraft, Planetside, Medal of Honor Airborne, and a couple others do well in the first person perspective. I just feel like a sheep running through a pen whenever I play most linear action games, I hope Far Cry 3 doesn't overdo it.
I hate how the bullets hit you and damage you, it draws away from it IMO, can't they just enable some anti-flinch and blood thing at the start so it seems a bit more cinematic?
This, more games need to have your character be less of a bullet sponge. Stalker was brilliant for this, enemies were often shit shots but if you were hit, holy fuck would it affect you, really makes running for cover more tense. Though I suppose this probably isn't what the game is going for
Running to cover and camping behind rocks sound really boring.
I hope we don't have to kill Vaas at some point He is just too fucking cool Right up there with Handsome Jack

You fall off a 5-foot mound of dirt, so you cauterize your whole arm by jamming a fistful of lit matches into your elbow.
