You people have a great gift. I've tried Pixel Art before and it is way too time consuming for me. The shading, colors, every detail counts and I just can not make it look shaded or even good.
Hey, don't give up! Even if you have given a hard shot at it there's always time for one more try! Here, these are some crazy helpful stuff that helped me!

There are tons of tutorials and resources to look at! Even if you do pixel art there will always be someone better than you. Don't give up!
Even if your stuff looks like a horrendous abomination practice will make it better. You don't just suddenly become good at art (though some people do seem to be naturally skilled at it), you gotta earn it (I think I can testify to that). And psh, this is nothing. If you saw some of the crazy stuff that some of the "master pixel artists" can make, well, lets just say you'd be standing in aw ;)
But yeah... you should definitely give it another shot! Take baby steps C:

I appreciate the compliments and tutorials. However I just didn't feel that it was for me, for example this try at RoboCop, which looks more like a Cyber Soldier, it's about two years old and was my first attempt. Not sure why it's so blurry. It's a .png image.

Looks nice, but would look even better with some shading.

Hey, don't feel so bad, trust me... my first attempt looked horrible.
Here's an example from something I made roughly a year ago.

It was horrendous! But you get better.
Here, I made an edit showing you on things that you can do to improve and I'll try to explain each step.
Stage 1- 3

1: First, we find a palette. Since I suck at making my own I find one that is available to the public and we swap the original colors out and the DawnBringer 32 colors in. You can find the palette here: http://hem.bredband.net/ricfha/pic/db32_v1_pal64x32.png. We also add some very minimilastic shading like Dawcio510 mentioned before. (Note: I changed the outline from pure black to dark purple, pure black is evil... but more on that later).
2: We add some shadow to the cheek dents (are those what people call dimples?) which makes them look more dent-ish, giving it a little bit of depth. I also try to do the same thing with the chin. You'll also notice that we edited the teeth, giving them a bit of depth by making them fade as the go closer to the left and right of the mouth.
3: Okay, so now we decide to completely erase the chin line and black dimples. Using black lines to describe details never leads to a very good result. It can, but it is difficult to execute it properly, So what you want to do instead of black outlines is use shadows. Shadows are AMAZING at describing detail and can be used to make things looks awesome.
1,2 and 3 summary: We swap colors with a pre-made palette and add shadows. We then add some highlights and end up removing the black chin dent thingamajigs (are those called dimples!?)
Okay, so now we're moving onto the next three steps! Bear with me, we got this ;)

4: So we actually ran into some problems, figuring out how to describe the chin-dents/dimples properly so this is where inspiration is needed from a incredible artist who made the palette that we are using.

Notice how he uses a mixture of colors to show the cheek dents. When making a piece of any kind it is important to look at other peoples works. Even if you STEAL from them I would consider that okay (I don't mean plagiarism mind you). By "stealing" I mean that you observe their techniques with colors or pixel placement and use it in your piece. It's a good way to learn. But that's going waayyyy off topic.
So we add some colors to the cheek dents to give it even MOAR depth (inspired from that Marilyn Monroe piece) and I add a very small detail back, our good old friend, the Chin! Notice once again how we are not using pure black but instead describe it with a shadow or dark beige color. A pinkish line is also added to the shadow.
5: Here's where all that fancy nose jazz comes in. We know add a highlight, making the nose look like a bump (which is technically what our noses are, little grotesque bumps with holes), some yellow is also added so that the color doesn't meet the beige head on but instead spreads softly to it. We add the yellow since it is closest to beige and white that we have, creates a nice effect.
We should also move the mouth down so that our nose doesn't get squashed between it and the eyes. Some dark colors are added to where the helmet meets the nose, makes it look more like it's resting on the mans head instead of being glued to it.
6: Okay, so now things get hectic but fun! We completely obliterate the lines on the mouth and putting in it's place, yep, you guessed it. MOAR SHADOW! We add darker colors below the teeth to make it seem like lips are there and are casting a shadow (though there are no lips the shadow helps to make a "illusion" that they are there). We add a slightly lighter color to the top of the mouth, this shows that the nose is casting a shadow. Instead of a pure black line between the teeth we add a dark purple (black is evil!) that slowly goes to red. The red makes it seem more mouth like, in a way it kinda depicts RoboCops gums.
Dithering is also applied to the face, dithering is used to make a smoother transistion between colors. Normally it isn't used on something so small but it has been inspired by the Monroe piece (and that's why observing other people creations can be so helpful, they give you ideas on what do to and how to do things).
AA (anti-aliasing) is using on the bottom of the face, it makes the outline more soft.
We also add dark colors to the left and right of the red cross thing on his face. If the light is hitting his face from the top right then the cross would reflect the light like that.
4,5 and 6 summary: We use a bajillion colors on the cheek dents to make them look more indented. We also add darker shades around the teeth and make the inside of his mouth sorta seeable. We take our first step into dithering and add some small AA to the bottom of the face and make the red cross reflect the light better.
Final Stage

7: Okay, so things have gotten pretty hectic haven't they? But we are making progress, which is a win. So our first step, we destroy our beautiful dithering, yep, wipe it from the face of the earth (except for those two pixels on the left :P). You can honestly keep it if you want but as mentioned previously, dithering is best used on bigger pieces.
Our next big step, we observe how metal reflects light. Now, I'm not sure how one would go about explaining this so I think it's best if you dissect it on your own. I the only thing I can say is that this is what I think I pinball reflecting light would look like.
We should also add some pink pixels at the highlight just to be cool (I don't know why, I guess it just ends up looking AWSOME if we do it). We also edit the cross thing a tad.
And Abracadabra! It's done!
I don't know if this is exactly well written but I do hope you pick apart it ;). And hey, maybe pixel art isn't your thing, everyone has something that they like doing, for some it's pixel art and for others it's designing space ships. Whatever the case, just remember that practice makes perfect. And yeah... sorry if there are a lot of redundancies in this, I haven't proof read it or anything.
Hopefully other people will be able to learn something from this too.
EDIT: watch out for crazy grammar mistakes
Sidenote: you may come across a lot of things that I've said before and redundancies
Sidenote: It might be better for any of the people who plan on reading this to just pick through the actual pictures.

Don't worry about it, man. I've been watching my thread, but have been too busy to post much. If I think of it, I'll try to post something soon.
I'm working on something, its my first time doing pixel art, so ignore it if its bad! So far i think its okay though ;D
Awesome. This city doesn't have anywhere for folks to live so i'm working on a couple themed apartments. Low-income, wealthy, normal, etc.

habbo vibes in this thread.
this looks good! I really want to start doing pixel art, do you recommend getting a tablet for it? sorry to break the thread but I'm intrigued.
You don't need a tablet, but they're nice to have for art in general. I don't use a tablet for my pixel art.
this looks good! I really want to start doing pixel art, do you recommend getting a tablet for it? sorry to break the thread but I'm intrigued.
Trying to use a tablet for pixel art is often actually harder than just using a mouse, just know, pixel art (and art in general) can be tediouse, and there's really not much you can do about that.
