[QUOTE=AK'z;30094851]Thank you. [editline]28th May 2011[/editline] Branching out with the same style isn't branching out. Sebadoh Mastodon Genesis Magnetic Fields Hypnos 69 Pulp Move it :smug: Also how no Pink Floyd?[/QUOTE] I already have a bit of Mastodon, didn't put them on the list because I don't like them much (I cannot explain this, I just don't like them). Thanks for the suggestions though, I'll give them a listen. [editline]28th May 2011[/editline] To be brutally honest none of that's really what I'm looking for. I'm going to be straight up, (dumbs incoming) but I'd prefer things a bit more... modern? I don't know why it is but I just have a really hard time appreciating music from bands which have, well, ended.
Magnetic Fields is right up your street. [editline]28th May 2011[/editline] And I see no point in having those ideologies. "stop listening because he died"
I don't know, it just gives me a different mindset to how I normally listen to music. With bands that are still alive and kicking, it's like, this band is doing this right now, this reflects the world I live in, and I may see this band live at some point in the future. I can appreciate older music for its influence, but there's just all these other things I have to take into account when I listen to it, distracting me from the actual music. I'm not trying to impose this ideology onto anyone, it's just frankly how my mind operates with music.
I feel kind of sorry for you if that happens. It's not illegal, but I assure you it's a dreaded way of thinking. I search for artists who have honed in their expression for the sole purpose to create. I personally don't think about "influence" and shit when I hear it. It's all about expression. And if they die... Or are murdered. Then the connection can be strengthened. [editline]28th May 2011[/editline] But seriously. Magnetic Fields, get some.
Maybe it's something else then, I think I might be spoiled by sound quality, or something. I feel bad about it but I find music from the 90s onwards to be the best :frogbon: And yeah, I'll listen to Magnetic Fields.
Ah, production quality bothers you! That is acceptable. But then again you need to know roots to appreciate it more. Trust me :smug:
Wait, I just realised! I think I don't listen to older music because, well people have already had their chance to appreciate that work, that is, while it was new. I feel like I'm wasting my time if I'm not appreciating new music in that same way. I can't really explain why but that's just how I operate. Let me put it this way: I [I]like [/I]older music, but I don't willingly listen to it [I]regularly[/I]. There we go. [editline]28th May 2011[/editline] Enough of me, anyway, this is a "suggest some music" thread.

It would be more of a thrill listening to people in their prime. :v:

[editline]28th May 2011[/editline] Enough of me, anyway, this is a "suggest some music" thread.[/QUOTE] but some music was very much ahead of it's time. sometimes the ideas behind old music get adopted by other musicians until listening to the founders isn't new for anyone nowadays. it's not like many musicians nowadays have even caught up to the kind of work that Charles Mingus was doing decades ago. So in that way it's very new music, because his ideas are so developed.
I'll be sure to give those a listen. But as I said, I feel like it's pointless for me to listen to older music, that's just how my mind works. I still like it and thoroughly appreciate it, but I could be riding the wave of crazy new shit instead of sitting in the past.

But most of the new shit is just people playing with different styles, and not looking into the deeper workings of their music. Style is pretty one dimensional I find.
Gimme some "I'm going to fuck everything with my thirty inch dong, cause I'm so fucking angry" music. I need to purge some emotions.
I need some electronic music that is very glitchy sounding.

[QUOTE=vagrant;30131507]decent list but what on earth is grails doing there? and what exactly is post folk?[/QUOTE] Grails is post rock/post metal/post drone/post ambient. Pretty damn near post music. Post folk is whatever you want it to be.
yea.. no. definitely not metal, and couldn't be farther from drone.
yeah.. yes. definitely EVERYFUCKINGTHING [url]http://www.last.fm/music/Grails/+tags[/url]
The Beatles Pink Floyd Megadeth B.I.G The White Stripes Jimi Hendrix The Doors Led Zeppelin Black Sabbath Metallica Any suggestions? I'd prefer newer music, I often feel that I'm living in the past.

[editline]30th May 2011[/editline] Just go through people's last.fms and play their top artists. See what you do and don't like. You're pretty much a blank slate right now.
lol I know how to look up tag clouds on last.fm. but this band is not metal, obviously. and not drone. I bet you believe "tibetan crime jazz" is real too?
stop being itchy bitchy vagrant.
