Looks fucking terrible. I might go see it ironically
You might as well pirate it then. When you go to see it 'ironically' you're nothing different than people who go to see it regularly, you still contribute to the movies success.
Ah yes, nostalgia. Remember Tracer from Overwatch, back in good old 2016? Things were simpler then.
Well from the perspective of the characters in the movie, that is nostalgia. Or at least the people who were alive when Overwatch was played.
Ah yes, nostalgia. Remember Tracer from Overwatch, back in good old 2016? Things were simpler then. You're comparing a fighter game with an hollywood movie. Completely different products with completely different appeal.
I said reference as well, I understand that's not nostalgia funnily enough. Except I'm saying that the video game references are to appeal to the same demographic? Which is entirely true?
I wanna see it so bad, but don't wanna give any money unless it's actually good
Is this GameFight? There's no dog Charlie Sheen on it so I can't tell
Like... I don't understand why people are complaining about it? What's wrong with nostalgia/reference overload?
Because the book it's based on is nothing BUT nostalgia/reference overload. As to why people are complaining about this: have the trailers told you anything about the story at all so far beyond some vague glimpses of a war of some kind? Does this look like it'll be anything more then nostalgia wankery?
Not gonna get my hopes up for this. It's a movie based on writing like this: [t]https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DQtLXj1VAAEb2yh.jpg[/t]
I'd like to point out that this isn't just some dude rambling about a tacky car he wants. This is some dude rambling about a tacky car he owns. [t]https://i0.wp.com/templeofgeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Classic-Game-Fest-2017-28.jpg[/t]
For me this looks like just a simple, no effort cash grab. Designed to lure GAMERZ into it because they hope to see someone they recognise. Only to be shown a dumb movie, with poor action, poor acting and product placement out the fucking ARSE Do you remember when Wreck - it- Ralph was getting hyped, because it featured huge name characters on their posters, like Sonic, Bowser, Eggman. Well thats what THIS feels like (except WiR was good.)
You might as well pirate it then. When you go to see it 'ironically' you're nothing different than people who go to see it regularly, you still contribute to the movies success.
But I wanna go with friends
I said reference as well, I understand that's not nostalgia funnily enough. Except I'm saying that the video game references are to appeal to the same demographic? Which is entirely true?
Smash doesn't pretend to have an interesting plot or a moving story. It's a fighter game. When a movie take itself seriously, pretends to have an interesting plot but is entirely designed to "appeals to a demographic" to sell, that's cynical and sad. This trailer really reminds me of the scene in Valerian that really achieve killing the movie for me. Minor spoilers I guess. The story suddenly stops in its tracks for what feels like 10m to have Rihanna dance at the camera while the main character sits there. It doesn't add to the story at all and that character ends up being completely useless. The only reason it's there is to be able to put her in trailers and in the marketing campaign around the movie to make Rihanna fans watch it. It's an absolutely trash scene, it kills the artistic integrity of the movie and achieves ruining the rythm of the already terrible plot. And this is all i'm seeing here. Scene that have 0 emotionnal or plot value to them, just stuff shove in it to sell.
It's a Spielberg movie, regardless of what you think this guy knows how to create a creative movie
A visionary with discerning tastes in source material

And again what's wrong with that?
Smash doesn't pretend to have an interesting plot or a moving story. It's a fighter game. This isn't pretending to have an interesting plot in the trailers, so why are you expecting it to?
I’m reading the book right now and it owns? Y’all just a bunch of haters
I mean, this is the film guys. It's going to be a big, dumb, reference-filled puzzle-quest. If watching 13-18 year olds try to reason their way through a literal sea (well, ok, a galaxy shaped like a rubix-cube more than a sea) of pop culture references doesn't appeal to you, so won't the film. [thumb]https://imgur.com/4rR7JrL.png[/thumb]
Yeah, that's what I'm expecting going in. Are people expecting something else and that's why they're hating on it so much? There's nothing in the trailers to suggest it's anything else
So far this looks like like the embodiment of that Steve buscemi scene (How do you do fellow kids?) in a movie Well the book is basically a fucking fanfiction when it comes to levels of writing. Sad to say, but the best thing to come out of this book was that weird game that vinesauce played called "Ready Player Fuck!" which is basically a scarily precise parody of this book
Well yes, I know that's what the book is because I've read it myself. That's why I enjoy it? And again what's wrong with that?
Nobody told you it was wrong to enjoy it. It looks like the pandering trash I hate in modern hollywood to me. Good for you if you enjoy it.
Are people just saying it’s fanfiction tier writing because they read that one excerpt from the book
Well yes, I know that's what the book is because I've read it myself. That's why I enjoy it? And again what's wrong with that?
Wanna point me to somewhere I said that it was wrong? I'm just saying this looks like pandering trash. You can enjoy your trash if you want to, everyone has some absolute garbage they like. I'm just saying, don't act like we're being super mean for no reason.
Are people just saying it’s fanfiction tier writing because they read that one excerpt from the book
They're just saying it's fanfiction tier with the amount of pop culture characters in it
Are people expecting something else and that's why they're hating on it so much? There's nothing in the trailers to suggest it's anything else
Steven Spielberg has directed Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan and has endlessly influenced pop culture with Jaws, ET, and Indiana Jones. To go from that to a project that doesn't even merit the label "wank" is just tragic.
Are people just saying it’s fanfiction tier writing because they read that one excerpt from the book
I read the book. Multiple times. It was one of my favourite books as a kid. Even then, I recognized it was fan-fiction tier.
Are people just saying it’s fanfiction tier writing because they read that one excerpt from the book
In fairness, he's not an amazing author. But it's not fanfiction - they're just cringing because it's full of references which're poured over by over-excited miscreant youth who are way too in to the 80s. Not everybody likes Saturday Morning Cartoons; Cline is a SMC writer. Fanfiction writers write the way they do because they haven't yet figured out how to write well. Cline could probably write a technically decent book series - but that's not what he likes to write. He likes to write schlock in the form of saturday morning cartoons - it's well written schlock but it's absolutely schlock that's intended for people who enjoy to occasionally read schlock (such as myself). This is a book/film for people who liked Mr. Edge-Ninja Ultra-Pizza-Delivery-Boy who is also an Akira-wannabe from Snow Crash. If you couldn't tolerate Snow Crash you'll hate Ready Player One. It ain't no 'Inception' and it doesn't pretend to be.
Not gonna get my hopes up for this. It's a movie based on writing like this: [t]https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DQtLXj1VAAEb2yh.jpg[/t]
I swear one day I will write a better story than this shit and Fifty shades. If it's so easy to make a successful book, then I better get started.
I fucking hate nerd culture.
Regardless of how the movie turns out, it's a good trailer imo.
I fucking hate nerd culture.
LOL WE'RE SUCH NERDS ^_^ Which is basically shit personified.
I’m reading the book right now and it owns? Y’all just a bunch of haters
I didn't read it, but it says a lot about the book if the only way to defend it is calling people who don't like it "haters".
Worth mentioning that the race scene in the trailer isn't anywhere in the book. Chances are this movie will be pretty different, which is definitely a good thing.
