I'm thinking about joining Christianity, should I?
Hey. You might not have noticed, you know, being like under 20 and all, (probably), but if you look back even like, say, 300 years. The stance between religion and science has greatly shifted. So if you're going to say that there isn't progress being made, please check the data that would indicate no progress being made. If no progress was made, we would still be placed under house arrest for believing the sun is the center of the solar system.
That's also got a lot to do with education in general, though. A lot of people back then were no doubt curious (it's human nature to be curious about the world around us), but there weren't as many scientists (who were the most noticeable non-religious people back in the olden days) because most people were unfortunately educated in the way of science.
Carbon, you didn't respond to my post. What exactly is "The Church"?
Take a guess, the Catholic Church.
Morals are a result of natural human emotions. Humans sympathize for other humans, and can learn naturally what is wrong and right. Religion can press these morals onto people, but that doesn't mean they created them.
sympathy is a form of social cognition which is formed through the socialization process which leads right back to religion
before there was society there were no generally accepted morals so there was no socialization process so sympathy (while perhaps may have existed) was quite rare
I'm talking way back here, right before the hunter-gatherer groups started to spring up
Because, you small minded little fool, your actions can't be summarized by pretty sounding rhetoric you heard on "Way of the Master". You hurt people with the best actions, and you help people with the worst of actions. But don't you fucking dare try to say that your statistically ridiculous possible salvation is worth the damage you do by being a thick headed fuck nugget.
What have I done to hurt society? What I do does not reflect what Christianity does, and vice versa. You're treating Christianity like a group. You don't JOIN Christianity. You believe in Christianity. I don't build missionaries in far out lands. I don't burn people's houses. I don't insult atheists and ruin their lives. I act as I act. So does everyone else.
I'll be a son-of-a-bitch, you're serious.
Religion is rarely taught in schools, and is certainly not a part of our society in the sense that it builds to it.
Hospitals, well that is just too damn easy. Wallow in your ignorance.
Science is the reason you are on a computer spreading your bullshit now, science is the reason the Bible was able to be printed on paper. God didn't hand it to us, respect human innovation.
He is 100% right about the Mother Teresa part. Hospitals DID come about because of religion, but they are not, and did not greatly benefit from the religious angle of it all.
I am going to explain what Christianity is:
You need to believe that Jesus was God and that he died to save humanity from sin.
There is the Bible, which is a book of morals. You are not required to follow it in any way. There is no passage in the Bibles that says you must.
That is it.
Trying something does not make you paranoid.
Having faith in an idea and hoping for the best does not make you paranoid.
Having a religion does not make you paranoid.
God, where do you pull this stuff from?
Trying to act like a tribal fool from the year 4000 BC because an all powerful man might be watching you is paranoid.
Holding on to ridiculous unfounded claims regardless of the consequences is apathetic and foolish.
Thanks for applying what I said to things I wasn't talking about. I do love it when you're slow so I have to say everything multiple times.
Any omnipotent being that would condemn a good person to endless suffering for not believing in him is nothing but evil in the highest degree.
Take a guess, the Catholic Church.
When did I ever mention them?
So, strongly believing something is irrational?
You seem to have faith in your atheism and your fridge logic. If that's so, then we have a bit of irony in this, don't we?
Faith isn't strongly believing something, faith is believing something without any evidence for it. My evidence for atheism is logic, logic which makes sense, logic that can be applied to other things besides whether or not I should believe in a god, despite there being no evidence for the existence of one. Similarly, I do not go to check if my house is falling down every few minutes, because there is no evidence for it. Logic works, faith doesn't.

Hmmm.
What's better, The bible is real because the bible is real,
or
Years of inovation crafted from the technological advancements created through testing and experimination in the real physical world.
I'm an agnostic Jew, kind of hard to believe, but I love being Jewish....I mean...latkas...bagels.....spinning tops.....matza......matzo ball......gefilte fish....'tis a good life.
But any religion you choose someone is going criticize you. Does it really matter what other people think of your decisions? If it does, then grow a pair of nuts and learn how to say "Fuck you" to everyone who disagrees.

Nonsense. If you live in a country where you can vote, you are doing damage by being impossibly stubborn.
Your actions effect everyone, and your actions are influenced by your thoughts, and so if you refuse to think responsibly, you will never act responsibly.

What? How is that relevant to my post?
Science came before religion. As soon as people began making observations about the physical world around them, they were being scientific.
Your problem is that your definition of science is far too narrow.
I've been talking the entire time about modern science
if you've been talking about science in the most basic form as in the form of exploration of the world then yes you're right, but let's be real here
you were talking about modern science. physics and electrical engineering and all that good shit. Because if you were trying to distinguish the difference between science as you define it and religion then you'd be contradicting yourself, as religion was one of the many ways that man explored the physical world around him.
That's also got a lot to do with education in general, though. Well, you have to consider that back then not many could afford to be a scientist because they had to produce food. Overtime, science increased food production, creating more scientists and such, and it keeps increasing exponentially until we theoretically reach a technological singularity. Contrarily, religion in the current day, takes potential scientists, doctors and what have you and gives them a meaningless, illogical, and eventually completely inconclusive task to dedicate their lives to.
This is why I keep telling people not to talk about religion on facepunch, but nooo, nobody listens

I think I understand what you mean but it's the difference of definition from person to person which causes the arguments with your idea.

Morality doesn't exist! It's what we want it to be! Always has. He's no more evil than you are, if he exists.

Why does it seem that every post you make is either an insult, or a claim derived from a stereotype?

Isn't that kind of slimy?
Not following the Bible because it never expressly says you have to follow it?
I mean, is there a law that states you have to follow the law?

Do the police come after you if you enjoy those things without believing in a deity? Lets face it, I'm an atheist, and I LOVE Christmas. You really don't need a reason to celebrate something, as far as I'm concerned, I can celebrate any day I want, because I'm alive.

No, but there are consequences if you don't.
I'm going to bed guys. This has been kind of interesting. I enjoyed reading arguments presented by the intelligent.
Too bad 90% of this threads population are idiots.
My last aside to you guys
Theists - believe what you want to believe. I understand why you do and I fully sympathize as long as you made your choice based on your own observations. Try not to be a dumb zealot who discards all other possibilities
Athiests - Keep on doing what you're doing. Hopefully you reached your conclusions based on your own observation and study as well. Don't try to save theists from believing in something. Because they might just be saving themselves.
Agnostics - DON'T LISTEN TO THE 99% OF ATHEISTS TRYING TO TELL YOU AGNOSTICISM IS ATHEISM. THEY'RE WRONG AND CANNOT TELL YOU WHAT YOU BELIEVE.
That is all
That is all.

No. I've always been talking about science in its most basic form: observe, test, repeat. It's one thing to put words in my mouth but now you're putting thoughts in my head.

christianity doesn't necessarily have to equal dogmatic following of the church
like I said in my first post
developing a personal relationship with god is cool
Why does it seem that every post you make is either an insult, or a claim derived from a stereotype?
Because you're a person who holds traits vile enough that when described sound like insults.
