However one may note that their is more of an illogical standpoint on the religious side. For some reason claiming faith is a good thing.
I don't care. Do we yell at little children because they believe in Santa? No. Christians have an even better standpoint. Incoming comparisons to God and Santa...
I'm talking about one thing, and one thing only. And I'm only going to say it once, so read real slow. You don't care what your beliefs do to effect other people as long as you have a possibility for salvation..
You know what? How. How does believing in a god affect other people in a negative way? How does going to church every Sunday and supporting my views affect other people in a negative way?
Basically, the majority of post from the atheist side have been insulting in some way. There have been a lot of very good, intelligent posts as well. On the religion side, I see less insults. If you think I'm lying profusely, look through the thread and decide for yourself. This is what irks me about atheism. They're as bad as medieval Catholics.
We're the largest underrepresented minority in the world. We've earned our irritability.
I'd say go for it, I'm Christian and I don't have any of the stereotypes that people place on Christians here.
This man tells the truth.
It is more because the religious throw out illogical fantasies as points, While those that are skeptical work to debunk those points.
There is a way to speak without swears and insults. You are doing it well. You are debating without random anger.
Further proving my point... now adding ignorant to the list. Good God, look at a single page and you can see clearly.
I didn't insult you, I don't need to. Although, you did just call out millions of people today to be comparable with Medieval Catholics. So who is insulting who?
That's not really the point, but whatever I guess.
I know I'm not Catholic and I'm offended, that's all.
This man tells the truth.
That man spoke an unprovable anecdote, actually.
Personally I would hate for their to be a god. The idea of eternal life scares me somewhat.
Each to his own, but whatever I wish there to be, from where I'm standing, there's only one logical position.
We're the largest underrepresented minority in the world. We've earned our irritability.
Great way to make a name for yourself. No, you have earned nothing if you are irritable.
I would like to propose a question, What is a soul and how does it work? How does it act as a brain with no matter or energy at all? It is proven that the brain is the main organ beind the mind and that any damage to it will also cause damage to the mind. It could then be guessed that should the brain die, so does your mind, in what way could there be an afterlife if your mind is dead?
Great way to make a name for yourself. No, you have earned nothing if you are irritable.
2000+ years of discrimination is a pretty big deal. As big, or bigger, than what other minorities had to put up with.
gj ignoring my entire post. Religion is not science because it's not observable, testable, or repeatable.
depends entirely on the perception of the individual I certainly agree with you here in modern context. But we're not talking about you and I, here, we're talking about humanity in the past. They weren't graced with the technology that's been developed before our births. they believed that religion was testable and repeatable. I mean shit if you want to get even deeper here (considering you're a smart guy you should know this) science doesn't prove anything (if you make me explain this I'm just fucking leaving, because you're just proving my point if you don't know the basic tenets of science). They didn't have the instruments or the concepts to prove other reasons certain things happened and other models. aka the reason the geocentric model was constructed (influenced quite heavily by both science and by religion)
I would like to propose a question, What is a soul and how does it work? How does it act as a brain with no matter or energy at all?
Good question.
I didn't insult you, I don't need to. Although, you did just call out millions of people today to be comparable with Medieval Catholics. So who is insulting who?
I called out the ignorant and stupid of the atheists, not you.
Agnosticism is pretty much implied since it's impossible to disprove a negative, therefore you can never disprove god. If I had to fully label myself, then I'd probably be something around, Agnostic Anti-Theist. Just because something cannot be disprove, doesn't mean it holds any merit.
Very true, that is the general belief for most agnostics. And that is one of the main issues in theism vs atheism.
2000+ years of discrimination is a pretty big deal. As big, or bigger, than what other minorities had to put up with.
I don't get it. Violence is never pardonable, and even though it's only words, there have been many many many people posting intelligently and without anger or insults.
You know what? How. How does believing in a god affect other people in a negative way? How does going to church every Sunday and supporting my views affect other people in a negative way?
Well, for one, you're not contributing to society by doing that. Supporting a belief in a god, gives more radical people, a safe shelter behind you.
I, for one, do believe that it's better to believe in god and fully avoid any possible punishment in the afterlife. Which is why I've decided to begin worshipping the Flying Spaghetti Monster. If it's real, it won't take kindly to my lack of pirate regalia. Better safe than sorry.
Can God create a being that is capable of destroying him and that he is incapable of destroying? If so, he ceases to be omnipotent. If not, he never was omnipotent in the first place.
sadly & ironically philosophy falls on deaf ears when talking to many christians [editline]02:46AM[/editline]
My paradox is better. A benevolent God wouldn't give infinite punishment for finite crimes.
ooooh I like that one
I called out the ignorant and stupid of the atheists, not you.
Oh, the ignorant and stupid atheists. Thanks for clearing that up ._. Still insulting. I smell irony, no?
Well, for one, you're not contributing to society by doing that. Supporting a belief in a god, gives more radical people, a safe shelter behind you.
Oh seriously? Get out. I'm not contributing to society. Get off you computer and become a farmer, because you're not contributing to society.
Well, for one, you're not contributing to society by doing that.
You aren't either by insulting theists. In fact, you're probably doing worse for society by doing that.
Of course. I'm in agreement with all of that. But here's the thing: everybody is fucking stubborn. Everybody has their mind made up. I seriously doubt that by debating the existence of god we'll ever get anywhere, because all of the religious people think that they're right, and those beliefs are set too far in their minds to change, and all of the non-religious people are certain that they're right, and they're not going to change their minds either. These debates never end up going anywhere in my experience (and I've observed and participated in a lot of religious debates), we end up going in circles and never getting anywhere on the topic, and eventually everyone gets board and gives up.
Once on FP I convinced someone that there is almost certainly no soul because there is no proof and no evidence. :3:
Oh, the ignorant and stupid atheists. Thanks for clearing that up ._. Still insulting. I smell irony, no?
You are scooping up crumbs. Please stop pointing out every little speck of incorrect text I post. There are millions of Christians who are 10 times worse than the people I mentioned.
Oh seriously? Get out. I'm not contributing to society. Get off you computer and become a farmer, because you're not contributing to society.
From a statistical standpoint based on the past conversation alone, you may be seen as a detriment to knowledge. While not a huge detriment, it is still a detriment.
Oh seriously? Get out. I'm not contributing to society. In fact, you're probably doing worse for society by doing that.
There are plenty of farmers. You may or may not have noticed, but the nation I live in, the USA, generally has enough food. I believe I can contribute more to society by convincing others to go and stop wasting their Sunday morning, and do something else, paint a painting, write a story, do charity work, something.
You aren't either by insulting theists. In fact, you're probably doing worse for society by doing that.
Not necessarily, Even if both were wrong they would be doing the same detriment to society.
