some people like having something to believe in
and some people like not having to live with the consequences of stupid beliefs because an adult couldn't let go of his imaginary friend.
Yes, charities can go without. But a charity can go a long way if it has a sponsor. Since churches tend to sponsor charities, they do tag along nicely.
It would seem a bit poetic to compare this to something else.
Sell something in return for larger gains for what you hope is a greater good at a cost that may haunt you.
and some people like not having to live with the consequences of stupid beliefs because an adult couldn't let of his imaginary friend.
Why was this necessary? Do you take enjoyment from it? Do you think that it makes you look smarter?
Christianity is just a way to control how people live and think.
Yes, charities can go without. But a charity can go a long way if it has a sponsor. Since churches tend to sponsor charities, they do tag along nicely.
A charity could be sponsored by something other then a church, quite a few companies like to sponsor charities, governments could sponsor them too. Instead of a church that has those hidden costs.
Christianity is just a way to control how people live and think.
How? How am I controlled by my beliefs?
Why was this necessary? Do you take enjoyment from it? Do you think that it makes you look smarter?
What do you want me to call it? Also way to not address the rest of it, and nitpick a little thing that bothers you.
A charity could be sponsored by something other then a church, quite a few companies like to sponsor charities, governments could sponsor them too. Instead of a church that has those hidden costs.
First off, yes they can, but churches do it all the time. It's almost expected in some places.
Secondly, what hidden costs?
What do you want me to call it?
Faith would be preferable probably.
Why was this necessary? Do you take enjoyment from it? Do you think that it makes you look smarter?
Do you think it make you look smarter to ignore the bulk of a person's post?
Because it doesn't, but you are doing a good job of it so far.
First off, yes they can, but churches do it all the time. It's almost expected in some places.
Secondly, what hidden costs?

I can't help but think that there's something ironic about doing charities or whatever simply because they are church sponsored. You don't need a church, for all the good that does, you do not see the hidden cost. The cost of how many people have died because of a belief, how many people have gone on to waste their lives in the service of a church, what those people could have accomplished otherwise... you don't see that. So while a church sponsored charity seems great, you can have a charity without a church.
Why can't we all just get along?
Hello facepunch, so far I have observed you and the internet on your opinion of Christianity. The majority of you decline it within 2 post of it being mentioned.
Also just to say I have been attending bible class for the past year on how to be saved and become a christian. The evidence of god is quite compelling and soon I am thinking about being baptized. Also when you think about it what is there to lose when you become a christian.
So far I am agnostic you could say, but I stay on the side of Christianity. Although I have been thinking should I actually get baptized and join God or become atheist. I don't hate atheist, although some of them show ignorance when it comes to religion.
Most of you atheist give yourselves an evil image of hating all religious beings. On the other hand some Christians go crazy and say you will obey God or burn in hell. I would like you Facepunch to help me decide on whether to become atheist or join the religious sect of the world.
In my opinion, you are wasting your time. Live your life not taken by a religion, but free to do as you please.
Also, if you become a priest/cardinal no sex for you.
I'm serious.
Why can't we all just get along?
Because stupid people have stupid beliefs that deny basic human rights to people.
Do you think it make you look smarter to ignore the bulk of a person's post?
Because it doesn't, but you are doing a good job of it so far.
I didn't ignore the bulk of his post. I just didn't comment on it. I will do it for you:
I don't find it a problem that my parents were Christians. My life is not harmed in any way by it.
Again, you're stereotyping. Christian schools don't brainwash. Where I live, there's no such thing as a christian school. Only catholic ones. And even then, the kids there still bully, play, fight, laugh; they're normal people, with independent views. There's also public schools here, so you don't have to have a religion. In no way by believing in a god am I a bad person. Perhaps it's about time you realized that.
Lucky you. Unfortunately Christian schools do exist, and they are like that, and they do turn kids into brain washed drones, and by refusing to examine your beliefs because of a fucking selfish fear you have you are supporting them, and you should feel fucking bad.
Because stupid people have stupid beliefs that deny basic human rights to people.
How does Christianity deny people Human rights?
I don't find it a problem that my parents were Christians. My life is not harmed in any way by it.
It was changed though. I bet you're a christian because your parents were, correct me if I'm wrong.
How does Christianity deny people Human rights?
Gay Marrige, for one.
How does Christianity deny people Human rights?
Gay marriage, abortion, etc
Yes, and that helped religion to grow. But they were just using their fractured understanding of the scientific process to attempt to understand religion, so it still sounds to me that religion is a product of science and not the other way around.
I already said I was talking about modern science not scientific concepts
Your opinion of me changed rather quickly.
no it's more of a personal jab at your personality (which can pretty much be shot right back at me)
Yeah, I know that science doesn't prove anything 100%. But the only thing that can discount a current scientific theory is better science.
Wasn't necessary.
What I was talking about isn't really the self-evaluating property of science, it was more of the fact that science isn't used to prove something, it's used to establish a probability that something will happen if a certain set of variables occur. There's always that chance the pencil will fly up instead of fall down
Yes, but they were still using the best science they had at the time. The geocentric model came about because their observations seemed to indicate that the Earth is sitting still and everything else is flying around it. I wouldn't say that it was influenced heavily by religion, however. Religion simply permitted it because it didn't go against anything they believed.
Better science later showed up to replace it.
the bible was one of the key pieces of literature that proposed the geocentric model
message too short please read my posts
Sure, that does happen. But not always. I'm not wasting my life away to the church. I casually come in for the service, then leave. If someone wants to become a pastor, fine. Their loss.
Gay Marrige, for one.
What? How does Christianity affect gay marriage?
Lucky you. Unfortunately Christian schools do exist, and they are like that, and they do turn kids into brain washed drones, and by refusing to examine your beliefs because of a fucking selfish fear you have you are supporting them, and you should feel fucking bad.
Give me 5 examples.
How does Christianity deny people Human rights?
oh dear god be careful with how you phrase this
christianity doesn't
the church that embodies christianity does a fuckload of this
Sure, that does happen. But not always. I'm not wasting my life away to the church. I casually come in for the service, then leave. If someone wants to become a pastor, fine. Their loss.
But also quite possibly societies loss.
Give me 5 examples.
jesus camp
Gay marriage, abortion, etc
Not to mention the innumerable amounts of shit they did before common sense wheeled in the reigns.
But also quite possibly societies loss.
uhh no?
Gay marriage, abortion, etc
