And to him, my religion is surely some silly proposal, too. I see how it can be hard for atheists to understand religion, but that's what faith is. You believe. Also, I'd like to say thanks to you, Faren, for being so calm and educated in your arguments instead of trying to be Mr. Badass Super-Atheist trying to make an idiot out of any/all Christians. It's been a pleasure discussing this with you.
Yep. It is difficult for a lot of atheists to understand because of the way we tend to think (which is logically). Since faith defies logic entirely, I have always had and I think I always will be at least a little confused about why someone believes in a certain faith and not a different one (apart from being born into it). Thanks for saying that. I think you're one of the few people who has actually ever said that to me. It's been good discussing this with you too (although I feel like a couple of times you missed the point of things that I said, but overall it's been good).
You are very dense. Deism is the complete opposite of Atheism.
Theism is the opposite of atheism. Note the prefix "a".
This is what I was trying to say though.
You just confirmed the fact of the religious stereotype by saying "You can't prove there isn't"
not really. A baseball is a solid object that we have seen before and can observe with the five senses. We have not yet observed god with our five senses and so when we try to disprove a diety's existence, we may not be observing correctly. Basically, we know how to find a physical form of a baseball, but we have not done that with any god yet.
q.e.d.
That's the church/greedy people, don't generalize all Christians.
You kind of remind me of the catholics who instinctively say "that's not all priests" when another story comes out about a priest raping some little boy. I don't know why, I just get that feeling.
I'm god.. Have faith that I am. Now, if you consider that stupid, religion is not for you.
I hate religion threads because it depresses me.
Judaism (and consequently, Christianity and Islam) were stories told by a bunch of bored people wandering in a desert. The case for a Christian/Jewish/Muslim god is no more compelling than the Buddha, Hindu deities, Shinto spirits, or any other omnipresent being or beings (yes, even Xenu).
Theism is the opposite of atheism. Note the prefix "a".
As I said before. I don't think he understands that.
You kind of remind me of the catholics who instinctively say "that's not all priests" when another story comes out about a priest raping some little boy. I don't know why, I just get that feeling.
fuck catholics
You are very dense. Deism is the complete opposite of Atheism.
Well yeah you say it is, but practically they're pretty such the same thing. The only real difference is if I say "god doesn't exist" you say yes instead of no.
Beliefs don't hurt others. I can believe that you should die but it doesn't hurt you. (I don't believe this)
...until those beliefs start showing up in domestic issues. Like now.
fuck catholics
That's not really the point, but whatever I guess.
Tell that to the millions of Christians who call the bible the word of god then.
Well obviously that makes them pretty close-minded. The basis of my own belief is that I will stick to my moral code. I will be a good person to the best of my abilities. I use my own senses to spot evil and avert it (I consider christians/others who put down other religions pretty evil). And if there's a God up there, that jackass can't say that I didn't do anything wrong. I was just living in my age and trusting in what I was taught.
...until those beliefs start showing up in domestic issues. Like now.
This thread isn't because of our beliefs it's because of us acting on them. Completely different concepts there.
Well yeah you say it is, but practically they're pretty such the same thing. The only real difference is if I say "god doesn't exist" you say yes instead of no.
That is the same deal when you compare atheism to ANY theistic religion. You're just walking in circles here.
Well, it's been cool talking about this but I am gonna go play Borderlands.
Well yeah you say it is, but practically they're pretty such the same thing. The only real difference is if I say "god doesn't exist" you say yes instead of no.
So what you're saying, is that they're pretty much the same except for the totally different core beliefs?
Well obviously that makes them pretty close-minded. The basis of my own belief is that I will stick to my moral code. I will be a good person to the best of my abilities. I was just living in my age and trusting in what I was taught.
Unless he says he gave you a specific moral code to follow and you didn't because you were so arrogant. Cause that's what I'd say.
I hate religion threads because it depresses me.
The revealing of truth can have negative and positive effects.
And if there's a God up there, that jackass can't say that I didn't do anything wrong.
What if he wants us all to be cruel sadistic bastards? Maybe god does exist and we completely misunderstood his message. It's equally plausible.
You just confirmed the fact of the religious stereotype by saying "You can't prove there isn't"
I'm not religious. I'm an atheist. I said that because it's exactly what he believes and I was being ironic. When the fuck did reading comprehension die?
Yep. It is difficult for a lot of atheists to understand because of the way we tend to think (which is logically). Since faith defies logic entirely, I have always had and I think I always will be at least a little confused about why someone believes in a certain faith and not a different one (apart from being born into it).
Indeed faith defies logic. That was obvious. A man drives by and says he can drive you to your destination, do you think faith will make the right decision? This is actually comparable to preachers saying they can save your soul if you follow their word.
This thread isn't because of our beliefs it's because of us acting on them. Completely different concepts there.
Yeah, I realized that after some thought. My bad. Having a hard time articulating my thoughts here, haha.
Make your own damn decisions. Facepunch cannot decide this for you.
So what you're saying, is that they're pretty much the same except for the totally different core beliefs?
I'm talking about practicality. As in what comes up in day to day life. Same thing with agnostics and atheists.
I'm not religious. I'm an atheist. I said that because it's exactly what he believes and I was being ironic. When the fuck did reading comprehension die?
Not all of us have been following this thread close enough to make note of what everyone's current position is. We just take it post-by-post, most of the time.
Yep. It is difficult for a lot of atheists to understand because of the way we tend to think (which is logically). It's been good discussing this with you too (although I feel like a couple of times you missed the point of things that I said, but overall it's been good).
It's weird, because on everything but relgion I'm actually very logical. I don't like the people who just do something random (and often stupid/dangerous) "just because". I'm a Christian but I've had serious periods of doubt, but somehow I've always come back to my beliefs. And sorry, I know I've missed the point of some of your posts, I'm probably being way too defensive. I guess I'm just surprised at an FPer who actually argues intelligently for Atheism instead of just saying "God is not real. /thread" and waiting for the green check marks to flood in.
Yeah, I realized that after some thought. My bad. Having a hard time articulating my thoughts here, haha.
Don't sweat it. It's semantics that trip people up in arguments like this.
The revealing of truth can have negative and positive effects.
Well that depends. If it's truth that claims to be truth then it's probably bullcrap. If it's truth that claims to probably be truth then it's probably truth. Probable truth truth is usually only bad when people want it to be bad.
