I'm thinking about joining Christianity, should I?
That is the same deal when you compare atheism to ANY theistic religion.
You're just walking in circles here.
If you believe in some God who takes an active interest in the world, then you can claim lots of stuff about what he's saying. And that introduces a lot of crazy things into the conversation. With deism you only really have one thing to add, and it's not even that important because it's a kind of God of the gaps type thing, if all you wanted to claim was something stupid and irrelevant.
Atheism is not the natural state of the human mind. Humans have always been curious about why we are here and people are merely proposing theories. Some people claimed to have the "truth" revealed to them (Christianity, Judaism, Islam).
Humans have always questioned their existence. It isn't like everyone went through their lives thinking their was no God. They always thought some divine being was giving them life. Ancient civilizations used to worship the Sun!
Atheism is not a natural state. I am not saying Atheism is wrong, but it is definitely not a natural state.
But humans also used to be complete idiots and lacked any scientific knowledge of anything.
We have science nowadays, and I think it's preposterous that a person can take belief of a God over what science has proven to us.

That may be so, but this is what science is for.
The only reason these silly fairy stores still exist is because society has used religion to exploit and control masses for ages. "If something ain't broke, don't' fix it."
Well not really. We're pretty screwed up. Logic is sort of an alien concept to people I think.
Yes I had to re-think that over, The point that
If someone is never told about a god they will most likely never believe in one.
made me rethink my previous post.
Be agnostic.
Then you can say "Shit, I don't know and I don't care."
This is incorrect, being an agnostic means you don't know if a god exists or that you don't believe a god is knowable, this is a completely different issue as to whether or not you believe one exists.
Sleep is against my religion I will see you in hell heathen
(Decided to check the tread once more) You'll see me? So you're going to hell, too? Oh, also, rated funny anyway.
I would rather burn eternally than believe in a magical invisible being that has absolutely no proof of existence.
Even if god WAS proven real, I wouldn't worship him. There are so many other gods/supernatural beings out there that are more worthy of my worship. Odin is a p. cool guy.
And why is it logical to believe we something didn't put us here?
I know I am jumping to the old "religious defense," when you can't prove God doesn't exist, but that is a rational idea. There is no full blown proof yet that God does not exist. It is rational to believe in a high being.
It is neither logical or illogical to not believe in a higher being, as we have no substantial evidence to the proof of existence or proof of non existence.
Odd ninja there. I edited my post before I saw this one.

Because we have better and more evidentially backed up reasons as to why we are here than saying "God did it".

Well because there's nothing showing that happened.
See the way logic works is you believe things you know to be true, and for the rest you just sort of don't give a damn and wait for other people to find out. Or you can find out too if you're into that sort of thing.
Rationality is sort of a vague concept. I don't like it that much.
Well yeah but all that does is let people set up crazy theories about what God is and who's baby he wants you to kill. Sure the act itself isn't bad, but it leads to hairy situations and stuff.
No

Obviously, Odin is trying to communicate with us.

I can see where you are going, but atheism not being a natural state? Thats going a bit far, and you saying that made me a little mad because thats a little silly to me. I have always gone through life thinking there was no god. I never thought there was a divine being giving me life. Why? Because i like things that make sense, and a magical man in the sky that no one can see that pretty much controls my life and can kill me at any time does not appeal to me. I can see "Atheism is not a natural state" being said by a preacher in a church to scare children into believing there is a god.
I sorta feel like i read you wrong now, rate me as you please if i did :(
Again, people bring science to the table, but at the end of the day science has not 100% disproved the existence of a higher being.

Your right. Just like you can't proove that we aren't actually a planet riding on the back of a giant turtle orbiting the sun. But this turtle can not be found in any way, can not be seen, has no mass, and has been around forever. This turtle also is responsible for all the 'miracles' that happen every day and all things that happen in your life.
No, we can't prove it doesn't exist and we can't prove it does. But it doesn't matter that we can't, what matters is how fucking retarded does that idea seem?
Obviously, Odin is trying to communicate with us.
This must be that faith thing I've heard about so much.
I have opened my mind to your word, oh great Odin
I know that I'm going to be flamed for this, but what the hell is up with Facepunch and theism? The second someone talks about it is the second that a bunch of atheists come in, calling theists ignorant, stupid and shallow right wing nutjobs. When a theist comes in after that and presents his argument for theism, that theist most always gets flooded with insults and flames from atheists too! Is there something I'm missing here? Really, if theists are such ignorant people, then why are all these atheists being ignorant too?
as long as you develop a strong and personal relationship with god (with no middle man such as the bible or a priest) go for it
But humans also used to be complete idiots and lacked any scientific knowledge of anything.

Yeah. That's why we threw little girls into volcanoes. We're way past that, now we have armed militias for that sort of thing.

Science isn't supposed to disprove things. It's supposed to prove things. What dope science are you talking about.
develop a strong and personal relationship with god
Sounds pretty gay to me
Again, people bring science to the table, but at the end of the day science has not 100% disproved the existence of a higher being.
Well lets see what Science brings to the table and what religion brings to the table.
Science:
Antibiotics
Water Treatment
Enhanced Farming
Computers
*Every technological advancement*
Religion:
Holy Wars
How do you plan to prove Religion without science. The fuzzy feeling in your heart can't be used to prove it as it can be proved with science to be unrelated to any super natural being.

Yeah. If you take a look at all science has shown us, the idea of there being a god is just absurd. The whole Christian God story is just ridiculous.

we're defensive as fuck because we've got this whole persecution complex going on (which isn't undeserved)
you tell any run of the mill christian you're an atheist and you pretty much completely dehumanize yourself, even within your own family
I've got an italian (aka as catholic as you can get without going irish) family and the day I tell them I'm an atheist is the day I get attacked with a meat cleaver

Not everyones idea of god is a magical man in the sky. If given long enough, you would probably develop your own belief of why you are on earth, or not care. This is what history has proven time and time again.
Not everyone religion started out as a scam to make money. Some people really believed what they wanted to. If you go back to ancient cultures, they worshiped many non "being" things. The Sun, the Earth, the oceans.
The whole Christian God story is just ridiculous.
To be fair they're all equally ridiculous.
I know that I'm going to be flamed for this, but what the hell is up with Facepunch and theism? Well mostly because I think arguments for theism are pretty stupid, and are really easy to debunk, so everyone tries to debunk them all at once so they get that head rush you get when you prove people are full of dookie.
But it's not usually insults. It's usually copy pasted arguments from a funny web comic they read once.
